The Lord’s anger against Nineveh
2The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The Lord takes vengeance on his foes
and vents his wrath against his enemies.
3The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;
the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,
and clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He rebukes the sea and dries it up;
he makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither
and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
5The mountains quake before him
and the hills melt away.
The earth trembles at his presence,
the world and all who live in it.
6Who can withstand his indignation?
Who can endure his fierce anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire;
the rocks are shattered before him.
7The Lord is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,
8but with an overwhelming flood
he will make an end of Nineveh;
he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
9Whatever they plot against the Lord
he will bring1:9 Or What do you foes plot against the Lord? / He will bring it to an end;
trouble will not come a second time.
10They will be entangled among thorns
and drunk from their wine;
they will be consumed like dry stubble.1:10 The meaning of the Hebrew for this verse is uncertain.
11From you, Nineveh, has one come forth
who plots evil against the Lord
and devises wicked plans.
12This is what the Lord says:
‘Although they have allies and are numerous,
they will be destroyed and pass away.
Although I have afflicted you, Judah,
I will afflict you no more.
13Now I will break their yoke from your neck
and tear your shackles away.’
14The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh:
‘You will have no descendants to bear your name.
I will destroy the images and idols
that are in the temple of your gods.
I will prepare your grave,
for you are vile.’
15Look, there on the mountains,
the feet of one who brings good news,
who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your festivals, Judah,
and fulfil your vows.
No more will the wicked invade you;
they will be completely destroyed.1:15 In Hebrew texts this verse (1:15) is numbered 2:1.
Herren ska döma Nineve

2Herren är en svartsjuk, hämnande Gud,
Herren hämnas och är full av vrede.
Herren tar hämnd på sina motståndare
och behåller sin vrede mot sina fiender.
3Herren är sen till vrede
men stor i kraft,
han låter ingen gå ostraffad.
Herrens väg går fram i storm och oväder,
och molnen är dammet efter hans fötter.
4Han tillrättavisar havet,
han låter det torka ut
och floderna sina.
Bashan och Karmel vissnar,
och Libanons blomning tynar bort.
5Bergen skakar inför honom,
och höjderna smälter ner.
Jorden bävar inför honom,
världen och alla som bor där.
6Vem kan bestå inför hans förbittring?
Vem uthärdar hans brinnande vrede?
Hans vrede brinner som en eld,
och klipporna rämnar inför honom.
7Herren är god,
en fästning på nödens dag.
Han tar sig an dem
som tar sin tillflykt till honom.
8Men med en väldig flod
utplånar han Nineves plats.
Han förföljer sina fiender
ända in i mörkret.
9Vad ni än har för tankar mot Herren,
så ska han göra slut på dem.
Nöden ska inte komma två gånger.
10Som hopslingrade törnen
och druckna av vin
ska de brinna upp
som torr halm.1:10 Grundtextens innebörd är osäker.
11Från dig har det gått ut en man
med onda tankar mot Herren,
en ondskans rådgivare.
12Så säger Herren:
”Hur starka och många de än är
så ska de slås ner och förgås.
Jag har plågat dig, Juda,
men ska inte plåga dig mer.
13Nu ska jag bryta sönder det ok han lagt på dig
och slita av dina bojor.”
14Herren har gett en befallning om dig1:14 Syftar på den assyriske kungen.:
”Det ska inte finnas någon efterkommande
som för ditt namn vidare.
Ur ditt gudatempel ska jag förstöra
alla gudabilder, såväl skurna som gjutna,
och jag ska göra i ordning en grav åt dig,
för du är värdelös.”
15Se, över bergen stiger budbäraren fram
med goda nyheter
och förkunnar fred.
Fira dina högtider, Juda,
infria dina löften,
för den onde ska inte mer invadera dig;
han är fullständigt utplånad.
