The Lord’s anger against Nineveh
2The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The Lord takes vengeance on his foes
and vents his wrath against his enemies.
3The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;
the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,
and clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He rebukes the sea and dries it up;
he makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither
and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
5The mountains quake before him
and the hills melt away.
The earth trembles at his presence,
the world and all who live in it.
6Who can withstand his indignation?
Who can endure his fierce anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire;
the rocks are shattered before him.
7The Lord is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,
8but with an overwhelming flood
he will make an end of Nineveh;
he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
9Whatever they plot against the Lord
he will bring1:9 Or What do you foes plot against the Lord? / He will bring it to an end;
trouble will not come a second time.
10They will be entangled among thorns
and drunk from their wine;
they will be consumed like dry stubble.1:10 The meaning of the Hebrew for this verse is uncertain.
11From you, Nineveh, has one come forth
who plots evil against the Lord
and devises wicked plans.
12This is what the Lord says:
‘Although they have allies and are numerous,
they will be destroyed and pass away.
Although I have afflicted you, Judah,
I will afflict you no more.
13Now I will break their yoke from your neck
and tear your shackles away.’
14The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh:
‘You will have no descendants to bear your name.
I will destroy the images and idols
that are in the temple of your gods.
I will prepare your grave,
for you are vile.’
15Look, there on the mountains,
the feet of one who brings good news,
who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your festivals, Judah,
and fulfil your vows.
No more will the wicked invade you;
they will be completely destroyed.1:15 In Hebrew texts this verse (1:15) is numbered 2:1.
Profetie over Ninevé
1Dit is de profetie over Ninevé die God aan Nahum uit Elkos heeft gegeven.
2God waakt met jaloezie over zijn eer. In zijn toorn neemt Hij wraak op alle mensen die tegen Hem in opstand komen. De Here vernietigt al zijn tegenstanders. 3De Here is erg geduldig, maar ook heel sterk en Hij laat niet ongestraft wie schuldig blijkt te zijn. Hij toont zijn kracht in wervelwinden en storm. De wolken zijn als stof onder zijn voeten. 4Op zijn bevel drogen de zee en de rivieren op. De malse weiden van Basan en Karmel verdorren, evenals de groene bossen van de Libanon. 5Bergen beven voor Hem, heuvels smelten weg. De aarde beeft en raakt uit haar evenwicht, haar bewoners worden vernietigd. 6Wie kan standhouden tegen deze wrekende God? Wie houdt zich staande bij zijn geweldige toorn, die is als vuur, rotsen springen erdoor aan stukken.
7De Here is goed. Hij is een helper in de nood, een schuilplaats voor allen die op Hem vertrouwen. 8Maar zijn vijanden vaagt Hij weg met een reusachtige watervloed, hij jaagt hen de dood, de duisternis in. 9Wat voor plannen bent u tegen de Here aan het beramen? Hij zal er in één klap een eind aan maken, Hij zal geen tweede keer tegen u hoeven op te treden! 10Hij gooit zijn vijanden, die zich gedragen als een stel dronkemannen, in het vuur als een verwarde bos dorens. Als een bos droog stro vatten zij vlam en worden verbrand. 11Wat is die koning van u die een complot smeedde tegen de Here? Wat is dat voor een man die zulke boze plannen beraamt? 12‘Al bouwt hij een leger op van miljoenen soldaten,’ zegt de Here, ‘toch zal dat volledig worden vernietigd.’ Maar tegen zijn volk zegt Hij: ‘Ik heb u vernederd, maar zal u niet langer straffen. 13Ik zal uw boeien aan stukken breken en het juk van slavernij dat deze Assyrische koning u heeft opgelegd, van u afnemen.’ 14En tegen die koning zegt de Here: ‘Ik ga een eind maken aan het voortbestaan van uw vorstenhuis. Ik zal uw tempels met zijn gesneden en gegoten afgodsbeelden verwoesten. Ikzelf zal uw graf delven, want u bent het leven niet waard!’
15Kijk, daar komen de boodschappers langs de berghellingen naar beneden rennen met goed nieuws: ‘Het is weer vrede!’ Juda, vier vandaag feest en aanbid alleen de Here zoals u hebt beloofd! Want uw vijand uit Ninevé zal nooit meer een voet in uw land zetten, hij is volkomen vernietigd.
