A warning against hypocrisy
1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practise what they preach. 4They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5‘Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries23:5 That is, boxes containing Scripture verses, worn on forehead and arm wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and to be called “Rabbi” by others.
8‘But you are not to be called “Rabbi”, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth “father”, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Seven woes on the teachers of the law and the Pharisees
13‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 1423:14 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47.
15‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
16‘Woe to you, blind guides! You say, “If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.” 17You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18You also say, “If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.” 19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
23‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30And you say, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.” 31So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!
33‘You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.
37‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”23:39 Psalm 118:26’

偽善者のまちがい
1イエスは、群衆と弟子たちにお語りになりました。 2「ユダヤ人の指導者やパリサイ人たちが、あまりにたくさんの戒めを作り上げているので、あなたがたは、彼らをまるでモーセのようだと思っているでしょう。 3もちろん、彼らの言うことは、みな実行すべきです。言っていることは良いことなのですから。だが、やっていることだけは絶対にまねてはいけません。彼らは言うとおりに実行していないからです。 4とうてい実行できないような命令を与えておいて、自分では、それを守ろうとしないのです。
5彼らのやることと言ったら、人に見せびらかすことばかりです。幅広の経札（聖書のことばを納めた小箱で、祈りの時に身につける）を腕や額につけたり、着物のふさ（神のおきてを思い出すために着物のすそにつけるように命じられていた）を長くしたりして、あたかも聖者であるかのようにふるまいます。 6また、宴会で上座に着いたり、会堂の特別席に座ったりするのが何より好きです。 7街頭でていねいなあいさつを受けたり、『ラビ』（へブル語で、教師）とか『先生』とか呼ばれることも大好きです。 8だがあなたがたは、だれからもそう呼ばれないようにしなさい。なぜなら、神だけがあなたがたのラビであって、あなたがたはみな同じ兄弟だからです。 9またこの地上で、だれをも『父』と呼ばないようにしなさい。天におられる神だけが『父』と呼ばれるにふさわしい方だからです。 10それに、『先生』と呼ばれてもいけません。あなたがたの先生は、ただキリストひとりです。
11人に仕える人が最も偉大な者です。ですから、まず仕える者になりなさい。 12われこそはと思っている人たちは、必ず失望し、高慢の鼻をへし折られてしまいます。一方、自分から身を低くする者は、かえって高く上げられるのです。
13ああ、いまわしいパリサイ人、ユダヤ教の指導者たち。あなたがたは偽善者です。神の国に入ろうとしている人たちのじゃまをし、自分でも入ろうとはしないのです。 14町の大通りで、見栄のための長い祈りをし、聖者のようなふりをしながら、未亡人の家を食いものにしています。偽善者たち。
15そうです。あなたがたのような偽善者こそいまわしいものです。たった一人の改宗者（ユダヤ教に転向する人）をつくるために、どんな遠くへでもせっせと出かけて行くが、結局その人を、自分より倍も悪い地獄の子にしてしまうのです。
16自分の目が見えないのに人の手引きをしようとする者たち。あなたがたの規則では、『神殿にかけて』と誓った誓いは何でもないが、『神殿の黄金にかけて』と誓った誓いは果たさなければならないと言います。 17愚かな人たち。黄金と、黄金を神聖なものにする神殿と、いったいどちらが大切なのですか。 18また、『祭壇にかけて』と誓った誓いは破ってもいいが、『祭壇の上の供え物にかけて』と誓った誓いは果たさなければならないと言います。 19愚かな人たち。祭壇の上の供え物と、その供え物を神聖なものにする祭壇自体と、いったいどちらが大切なのですか。 20『祭壇にかけて』と誓うことは、祭壇の上のすべてのものにかけて誓うことにもなり、 21『神殿にかけて』と誓うなら、神殿と、そこにおられる神にかけて誓うことになるのです。 22また、『天にかけて』と誓うなら、神の御座と神ご自身にかけて誓うことになるのです。
23パリサイ人、ユダヤ教の指導者たち。あなたがたは偽善者です。自分の畑でとれる、はっかの葉の最後の一枚に至るまで、実にきちょうめんに十分の一をささげているのに、律法の中ではるかに大切な正義と思いやり、信仰はおろそかにしています。もちろん十分の一はささげるべきですが、もっと大切なことをなおざりにしては何にもなりません。 24自分の目が見えないのに、他人の手引きをしようとする者たち。あなたがたは、小さなぶよは気にして取り出しながら、大きならくだは丸ごとのみ込んでいるのです。
25いまわしい人たちよ。パリサイ人、ユダヤ教の指導者たち。あなたがたは偽善者です。杯の外側はきれいにみがき上げるが、内側はゆすりと貪欲で汚れきっています。 26目の見えないパリサイ人たち。まず杯の内側をきれいにしなさい。そうすれば、杯全体がきれいになるのです。
27ああ、いまわしいパリサイ人、ユダヤ教の指導者たち。あなたがたは美しく塗り立てた墓のようです。外側がどんなにきれいでも、中は死人の骨や汚らわしいもの、腐ったものでいっぱいです。 28自分を聖人らしく見せようとしているが、その外見とは裏腹に、心の中はあらゆる偽善と罪で汚れているのです。
29いまわしいパリサイ人、ユダヤ教の指導者たち。あなたがたは偽善者です。先祖が殺した預言者の記念碑を建てたり、先祖の手にかかった、神を敬う者たちの墓前に花を飾ったりして、 30『私たちには、先祖がしたような、こんな恐ろしいまねはとてもできません』と言っています。
31そんなことを言うこと自体、自分があの悪人たちの子孫だということを、自分で証言するようなものです。 32あなたがたは先祖の悪業を継いで、それを完成させているのです。 33蛇よ。まむしの子らよ。あなたがたは、地獄の刑罰を逃れることはできません。
34わたしがあなたがたのところに、預言者や、聖霊に満たされた人、神のことばを書き記す力を与えられた人たちを遣わすと、あなたがたは彼らを十字架につけて殺したり、会堂でむち打ったり、町から町へと追い回して迫害したりします。
35-36こうして、義人アベルから、神殿と祭壇との間で殺されたバラキヤの子ザカリヤに至るまで、正しい人たちが流したすべての血について、あなたがたは有罪とされます。そうです。何世紀にもわたって積み重ねられてきたこれらの報いは、今この時代の者たちの上に一度に降りかかってくるのです。
37ああ、エルサレム、エルサレム。預言者たちを殺し、神がこの都のために遣わされたすべての人を石で打ち殺す町よ。わたしは、めんどりがひなを翼の下に集めるように、何度、あなたの子らを集めようとしたことでしょう。それなのに、あなたがたはそれを拒んでしまったのです。 38ですから、あなたがたの家は荒れ果てたまま見捨てられます。 39はっきり言っておきます。神から遣わされた方を喜んで迎えるようになるまで、あなたがたは二度とわたしを見ることはありません。」
