Jesus and John the Baptist
1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.11:1 Greek in their towns
2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’
4Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy11:5 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’
7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:
‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.”11:10 Mal. 3:1
11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,11:12 Or been forcefully advancing and violent people have been raiding it. 13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15Whoever has ears, let them hear.
16‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others:
17‘ “We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.”
18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.” 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.’
Woe on unrepentant towns
20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.11:23 That is, the realm of the dead For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’
The Father revealed in the Son
25At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’
Jesus e João Batista
(Lc 7.18-35)
1Quando acabou de instruir seus doze discípulos, Jesus saiu para ensinar e pregar nas cidades da Galileia11.1 Grego: cidades deles..
2João, ao ouvir na prisão o que Cristo estava fazendo, enviou seus discípulos para lhe perguntarem: 3“És tu aquele que haveria de vir ou devemos esperar algum outro?”
4Jesus respondeu: “Voltem e anunciem a João o que vocês estão ouvindo e vendo: 5os cegos veem, os aleijados andam, os leprosos11.5 O termo grego não se refere somente à lepra, mas também a diversas doenças da pele. são purificados, os surdos ouvem, os mortos são ressuscitados, e as boas-novas são pregadas aos pobres; 6e feliz é aquele que não se escandaliza por minha causa”.
7Enquanto saíam os discípulos de João, Jesus começou a falar à multidão a respeito de João: “O que vocês foram ver no deserto? Um caniço agitado pelo vento? 8Ou, o que foram ver? Um homem vestido de roupas finas? Ora, os que usam roupas finas estão nos palácios reais. 9Afinal, o que foram ver? Um profeta? Sim, eu digo a vocês, e mais que profeta. 10Este é aquele a respeito de quem está escrito:
“ ‘Enviarei o meu mensageiro à tua frente;
ele preparará o teu caminho diante de ti’11.10 Ml 3.1.
11Digo a verdade a vocês: Do meio dos nascidos de mulher não surgiu ninguém maior do que João Batista; todavia, o menor no Reino dos céus é maior do que ele. 12Desde os dias de João Batista até agora, o Reino dos céus é tomado à força, e os que usam de força se apoderam dele. 13Pois todos os Profetas e a Lei profetizaram até João. 14E se vocês quiserem aceitar, este é o Elias que havia de vir. 15Aquele que tem ouvidos, ouça!
16“A que posso comparar esta geração? São como crianças que ficam sentadas nas praças e gritam umas às outras:
17“ ‘Nós tocamos flauta,
mas vocês não dançaram;
cantamos um lamento,
mas vocês não se entristeceram’.
18Pois veio João, que jejua e não bebe vinho11.18 Grego: não comendo, nem bebendo., e dizem: ‘Ele tem demônio’. 19Veio o Filho do homem comendo e bebendo, e dizem: ‘Aí está um comilão e beberrão, amigo de publicanos e pecadores’. Mas a sabedoria é comprovada pelas obras que a acompanham”.
Ai das Cidades que Não se Arrependem
(Lc 10.13-15)
20Então Jesus começou a denunciar as cidades em que havia sido realizada a maioria dos seus milagres, porque não se arrependeram. 21“Ai de você, Corazim! Ai de você, Betsaida! Porque se os milagres que foram realizados entre vocês tivessem sido realizados em Tiro e Sidom, há muito tempo elas se teriam arrependido, vestindo roupas de saco e cobrindo-se de cinzas. 22Mas eu afirmo que no dia do juízo haverá menor rigor para Tiro e Sidom do que para vocês. 23E você, Cafarnaum, será elevada até ao céu? Não, você descerá até o Hades11.23 Essa palavra pode ser traduzida por inferno, sepulcro, morte ou profundezas.! Se os milagres que em você foram realizados tivessem sido realizados em Sodoma, ela teria permanecido até hoje. 24Mas eu afirmo que no dia do juízo haverá menor rigor para Sodoma do que para você”.
Repouso para os Cansados
(Lc 10.21,22)
25Naquela ocasião, Jesus disse: “Eu te louvo, Pai, Senhor dos céus e da terra, porque escondeste estas coisas dos sábios e cultos, e as revelaste aos pequeninos. 26Sim, Pai, pois assim foi do teu agrado.
27“Todas as coisas me foram entregues por meu Pai. Ninguém conhece o Filho a não ser o Pai, e ninguém conhece o Pai a não ser o Filho e aqueles a quem o Filho o quiser revelar.
28“Venham a mim, todos os que estão cansados e sobrecarregados, e eu darei descanso a vocês. 29Tomem sobre vocês o meu jugo e aprendam de mim, pois sou manso e humilde de coração, e vocês encontrarão descanso para as suas almas. 30Pois o meu jugo é suave e o meu fardo é leve”.
