The parable of the sower
1Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered round him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3‘Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.’
9Then Jesus said, ‘Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.’
10When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11He told them, ‘The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12so that,
‘ “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!”4:12 Isaiah 6:9,10’
13Then Jesus said to them, ‘Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14The farmer sows the word. 15Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop – some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.’
A lamp on a stand
21He said to them, ‘Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? 22For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.’
24‘Consider carefully what you hear,’ he continued. ‘With the measure you use, it will be measured to you – and even more. 25Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.’
The parable of the growing seed
26He also said, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28All by itself the soil produces corn – first the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29As soon as the corn is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.’
The parable of the mustard seed
30Again he said, ‘What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.’
33With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Jesus calms the storm
35That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’ 36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’
39He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’
41They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’
حكايت كشاورز
1-2بار ديگر عيسی در كنار درياچه به تعليم مردم پرداخت و جمعيتی بزرگ نزدش گرد آمدند، به طوری كه مجبور شد در قايقی بنشيند و كمی از ساحل فاصله بگيرد و از همانجا با مردم سخن گويد. او وقتی می‌خواست چيزی به مردم بياموزد، معمولاً آن را به صورت داستان بيان می‌كرد. مثلاً يكبار اين داستان را نقل كرد:
3«گوش كنيد! روزی كشاورزی رفت تا در مزرعه‌اش تخم بكارد. 4هنگامی كه تخم می‌پاشيد، مقداری از تخمها در جاده افتادند و پرنده‌ها آمده، آنها را از آن زمين خشک برداشتند و خوردند. 5-6مقداری نيز روی خاكی افتادند كه زيرش سنگ بود؛ به همين خاطر زود سبز شدند، ولی طولی نكشيد كه زير حرارت آفتاب سوختند و از بين رفتند، چون ريشهٔ محكمی نداشتند. 7بعضی از تخمها نيز در ميان خارها ريخت؛ خارها دور آنها را گرفتند و نگذاشتند ثمری بدهند. 8اما مقداری از تخمها در زمين خوب و حاصلخيز افتادند و سی برابر زيادتر و بعضی‌ها تا شصت و حتی صد برابر ثمر دادند. 9اگر گوش داريد، گوش كنيد!»
10پس از آن، وقتی آن دوازده نفر و ساير پيروانش با او تنها بودند، از او پرسيدند: «منظور از اين داستان چه بود؟»
11عيسی جواب داد: «خدا به شما اين اجازه را عطا فرموده تا اسرار ملكوتش را درک نماييد. ولی برای آنانی كه از من پيروی نمی‌كنند، بايد همه چيزها را به صورت مُعّما و مثل بيان كرد. 12همانطور كه يكی از پيامبران فرموده: با اينكه می‌بينند و می‌شنوند، اما چيزی درک نمی‌كنند و به سوی خدا برنمی‌گردند تا خدا گناهانشان را ببخشد.»
13سپس به ايشان گفت: «اگر منظور اين مَثَل را درک نكرديد، مَثَلهای ديگر را كه خواهم گفت، چگونه خواهيد فهميد؟ 14منظور از كشاورز كسی است كه پيام خدا را مانند تخم در دل مردم می‌كارد. 15آن جادهٔ خشک كه بعضی تخمها بر آن افتاد، دل سنگ كسانی است كه پيام خدا را می‌شنوند، ولی چون قلبشان سخت است، فوراً شيطان می‌آيد و آنچه را كاشته شده است می‌ربايد. 16خاكی كه زيرش سنگ بود، دل كسانی است كه با خوشحالی پيام خدا را می‌شنوند. 17ولی مانند آن نهال تازه، چون ريشهٔ عميقی نمی‌دوانند، دوام نمی‌آورند. اينها گرچه اول خوب پيش می‌روند ولی همين كه به خاطر كلام آزار و اذيتی ببينند، فوری ايمان خود را از دست می‌دهند. 18زمينی كه از خارها پوشيده شده بود، مانند قلب اشخاصی است كه پيام را قبول می‌كنند، 19اما چيزی نمی‌گذرد كه گرفتاريهای زندگی، عشق به ثروت، شهرت‌طلبی و علاقه به چيزهای ديگر آنقدر فكرشان را مشغول می‌كند كه ديگر جايی برای پيام خدا در قلبشان باقی نمی‌ماند؛ در نتيجه هيچ ثمره‌ای به بار نمی‌آيد. 20و اما زمين خوب و حاصلخيز، دل انسانهايی است كه پيام خدا را با جان و دل می‌پذيرند و در مقابل، سی برابر، شصت و حتی صد برابر ثمر می‌دهند.»
مَثَل چراغ
21سپس از ايشان پرسيد: «چراغی را كه روشن می‌كنند، آيا زير جعبه يا تخت پنهان می‌نمايند؟ نه، بلكه آن را روی پايه می‌گذارند تا نورش بر همه بتابد. 22همينطور نيز هر چه پنهان و نادانسته است، روزی آشكار و واضح خواهد شد. 23اگر گوش شنوا داريد، گوش كنيد.
24«دقت كنيد تا آنچه را كه می‌شنويد، انجام دهيد. چون هر چقدر در انجام آنها بكوشيد، سخنانم را بهتر درک خواهيد كرد. 25زيرا هر كه چيزی داشته باشد، باز هم به او بيشتر عطا خواهد شد؛ و كسی كه چيزی نداشته باشد، حتی چيز كمی هم كه دارد از او گرفته خواهد شد.
مَثَل رشد دانه
26«حال، داستان ديگری تعريف می‌كنم تا بدانيد ملكوت خدا چگونه است: كشاورزی در مزرعه‌اش تخم پاشيد و رفت. 27روزها گذشت و كم‌كم تخم سبز شد و رشد كرد بدون آنكه كشاورز بداند چگونه اين امر اتفاق افتاد. 28زيرا زمين بدون كمک كسی، خودش تخم را به ثمر می‌آورد. يعنی اول ساقه بالا می‌آيد، بعد خوشه درست می‌شود، و بعد از آن دانهٔ كامل در خوشه ايجاد می‌شود. 29و وقتی ثمر رسيد، كشاورز داس را برمی‌دارد تا محصول را درو كند.»
مَثَل دانه خردل
30سپس گفت: «چطور می‌توانم ملكوت خدا را برای شما تشريح كنم؟ با چه مثلی آن را برايتان شرح دهم؟ 31-32مانند دانهٔ خردل است كه گرچه يكی از كوچكترين دانه‌هاست، ولی وقتی كاشته شد، از همهٔ گياهان بزرگتر می‌شود و شاخه‌های بلند می‌آورد، به طوری كه پرندگان می‌توانند زير سايه‌اش آشيانه كنند.»
33او پيام خدا را تا آنجا كه مردم می‌توانستند بفهمند، به صورت داستان و با مَثَلهای بسيار برای ايشان بيان می‌فرمود. 34در واقع عيسی هميشه به صورت داستان و مثل به مردم تعليم می‌داد. ولی وقتی با شاگردانش تنها می‌شد، معنی تمام آنها را به ايشان می‌گفت.
عيسی طوفان دريا را آرام می‌كند
35غروب آن روز، عيسی به شاگردانش فرمود: «به كنارهٔ ديگر درياچه برويم.» 36پس آن عده‌ای را كه در ساحل گرد آمده بودند، روانه كردند و با همان قايقی كه عيسی در آن نشسته بود، به راه افتادند. البته عده‌ای نيز با قايقهای ديگر همراهشان رفتند. 37چيزی نگذشت كه طوفانی شديد درگرفت. امواج سهمگين، قايق را آنچنان در هم می‌كوبيد كه نزديک بود از آب پر شده، غرق شود. 38اما عيسی در انتهای قايق آسوده‌خاطر، سر را بر بالشی گذاشته و خوابيده بود. شاگردان سراسيمه او را بيدار كردند و گفتند: «استاد، استاد، داريم غرق می‌شويم. اصلاً هيچ به فكر ما نيستيد؟!» 39او برخاست و به باد و دريا فرمان داد: «آرام شو!» همان لحظه باد از وزيدن باز ايستاد و همه جا آرامی كامل برقرار شد. 40عيسی به شاگردانش فرمود: «چرا اينقدر ترسيده بوديد؟ آيا هنوز هم به من اعتماد نداريد؟» 41ايشان در حالی که ترس سراسر وجودشان را فرا گرفته بود، به يكديگر می‌گفتند: «اين ديگر چگونه انسانی است كه حتی باد و دريا هم اطاعتش می‌كنند!»
