Jesus anointed at Bethany
1Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2‘But not during the festival,’ they said, ‘or the people may riot.’
3While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, ‘Why this waste of perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages14:5 Greek than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.’ And they rebuked her harshly.
6‘Leave her alone,’ said Jesus. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7The poor you will always have with you,14:7 See Deut. 15:11. and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.’
10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper
12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, ‘Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?’
13So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, ‘Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14Say to the owner of the house he enters, “The Teacher asks: where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.’
16The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me – one who is eating with me.’
19They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me?’
20‘It is one of the Twelve,’ he replied, ‘one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’
22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take it; this is my body.’
23Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24‘This is my blood of the14:24 Some manuscripts the new covenant, which is poured out for many,’ he said to them. 25‘Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’
26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus predicts Peter’s denial
27‘You will all fall away,’ Jesus told them, ‘for it is written:
‘ “I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.”14:27 Zech. 13:7
28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’
29Peter declared, ‘Even if all fall away, I will not.’
30‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘today – yes, tonight – before the cock crows twice14:30 Some early manuscripts do not have twice. you yourself will disown me three times.’
31But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’ And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane
32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,’ he said to them. ‘Stay here and keep watch.’
35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36‘Abba,14:36 Aramaic for father Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’
37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon,’ he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’
39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41Returning the third time, he said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!’
Jesus arrested
43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.’ 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48‘Am I leading a rebellion,’ said Jesus, ‘that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.’ 50Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus before the Sanhedrin
53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.” ’ 59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?’ 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’
62‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’
63The high priest tore his clothes. ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked. 64‘You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?’
They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter disowns Jesus
66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
‘You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,’ she said.
68But he denied it. ‘I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,’ he said, and went out into the entrance.14:68 Some early manuscripts entrance and the cock crowed
69When the servant-girl saw him there, she said again to those standing round them, ‘This fellow is one of them.’ 70Again he denied it.
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, ‘Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.’
71He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about.’

Gesù è tradito ed arrestato
1Due giorni dopo cominciava il rito della Pasqua, una festa annuale ebraica durante la quale non si mangia pane lievitato. I primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei cercavano un modo per arrestare Gesù con lʼinganno, per poi ucciderlo.
2«Ma non possiamo durante la Pasqua», dicevano, «altrimenti ci sarà un tumulto!»
3Nel frattempo Gesù era a Betania, nella casa di Simone il lebbroso. Mentre erano a tavola, una donna entrò, portando un flacone di costoso profumo. Rotto il sigillo, la donna versò il profumo sul capo di Gesù.
4-5Alcuni dei commensali erano indignati per questo spreco, almeno così parve a loro.
«Ma perché lo ha fatto? Avrebbe potuto vendere quel profumo per più di trecento monete, e poi dare il denaro ai poveri!» mugugnavano, e ce lʼavevano a morte con lei. 6Gesù allora disse: «Lasciatela in pace! Perché la criticate per una buona azione? 7Ci saranno sempre dei poveri fra voi, che avranno molto bisogno del vostro aiuto e che potrete soccorrere quando vorrete, mentre io non sarò qui ancora per molto.
8Questa donna ha fatto ciò che poteva: ha profumato il mio corpo anzitempo per la sepoltura. 9E aggiungo questo in tutta verità, che ovunque il Vangelo sarà predicato nel mondo, ci si ricorderà di questa donna e di ciò che ha fatto».
10Allora Giuda Iscariota, uno dei discepoli, si recò dai capi sacerdoti per mettersi dʼaccordo con loro ed aiutarli ad arrestare Gesù.
11Quando i capi sacerdoti seppero perché era venuto, ne furono molto felici e gli promisero una ricompensa. Così Giuda cominciò a cercare il momento e il posto favorevole per tradire Gesù.
12Il primo giorno di Pasqua, giorno in cui i Giudei sacrificano gli agnelli, i discepoli di Gesù gli chiesero dove volesse consumare la cena tradizionale di Pasqua. 13Gesù mandò due di loro a Gerusalemme con queste istruzioni: «Quando vedrete venire verso di voi un uomo con una brocca dʼacqua, seguitelo. 14Nella casa in cui entrerà, dite al padrone: “Il nostro Maestro ci manda a vedere la stanza che tieni pronta per noi, quella dove faremo la cena di Pasqua stasera!” 15Allora egli vi porterà in una grande sala al piano di sopra, già sistemata. È là che dovrete preparare la nostra cena».
16I due discepoli andarono in città, trovarono tutto come Gesù aveva detto e prepararono la cena.
17Verso sera arrivò Gesù con gli altri discepoli. 18Mentre mangiavano seduti intorno alla tavola, Gesù disse: «In tutta verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà, proprio uno di voi che intinge nel mio piatto».
19Una profonda tristezza sʼimpadronì dei discepoli; ed uno dopo lʼaltro gli domandarono: «Sono forse io quello?»
20Gesù rispose: «È uno di voi dodici che sta mangiando con me ora. 21Devo morire, come tempo fa predissero i profeti; ma, guai allʼuomo da cui sono tradito! Per lui sarebbe meglio che non fosse mai nato!»
22Mentre stavano mangiando, Gesù prese del pane, chiese la benedizione di Dio, poi lo spezzò e lo diede ai discepoli, dicendo: «Mangiate. Questo è il mio corpo».
23Poi prese un bicchiere di vino, di cui ringraziò Dio, lo porse ai discepoli, e tutti ne bevvero. 24Gesù disse: «Questo è il mio sangue, versato per molti, che conferma il nuovo patto fra Dio e lʼuomo. 25In tutta verità vi dico che non assaggerò più vino fino al giorno in cui non ne berrò del nuovo nel Regno di Dio!»
26Poi cantarono un inno e, usciti, si diressero sul Monte degli Ulivi. Gesù disse ai discepoli:
27«Tutti voi mi abbandonerete, perché Dio ha detto per mezzo dei profeti: “Ucciderò il Pastore, e le pecore saranno disperse!” 28Ma dopo che sarò risorto, andrò in Galilea, e là ci rivedremo!»
29Allora Pietro gli disse: «Io non ti abbandonerò mai! Non importa ciò che faranno gli altri!» 30Ma Gesù replicò: «Pietro, io invece ti dico che prima che il gallo canti una seconda volta domani mattina, mi avrai rinnegato tre volte».
31«No!» esclamò Pietro. «Neppure se dovessi morire con te! Non ti rinnegherò mai!» E gli altri discepoli dicevano lo stesso.
32Erano giunti intanto ad un orto di ulivi, chiamato lʼOrto di Getsemani. Gesù ordinò ai suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui, mentre vado a pregare».
33Prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a sentirsi oppresso dallʼorrore e da una profonda angoscia. 34Allora Gesù disse loro: «La mia anima è oppressa dal dolore per la morte che si avvicina: restate qui e state svegli con me». 35Andò un poʼ più avanti, poi cadde a terra, pregando Dio che, se era possibile, gli risparmiasse il momento terribile che lo aspettava.
36«Padre, Padre», diceva, «ogni cosa ti è possibile. Allontana da me questo calice di dolore! Tuttavia sia fatta la tua volontà, non la mia».
37Poi tornò dai tre discepoli e li trovò addormentati. «Simone!» chiamò, «Dormi? Non sei riuscito a star sveglio con me neppure unʼora? 38State svegli e pregate per non cadere in tentazione. Perché, anche se lo spirito è pieno di buona volontà, il corpo è tanto debole!»
39Gesù sʼallontanò di nuovo e pregò, ripetendo le stesse parole. 40Poi ritornò dai discepoli e ancora una volta li trovò addormentati, perché non erano riusciti a tenere gli occhi aperti e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli.
41La terza volta che tornò da loro disse: «Dormite pure, riposatevi. Ma no, il tempo di dormire è finito! Ecco, sono tradito e consegnato a degli uomini malvagi. 42Venite, alzatevi! Dobbiamo andare. Ecco, sta arrivando lʼuomo che mi tradirà!» 43Mentre stava ancora parlando, arrivò Giuda, uno dei suoi discepoli, accompagnato da una folla armata di spade e bastoni, mandata dai primi sacerdoti e dagli altri capi giudei.
44Giuda aveva detto loro: «Saprete chi arrestare, quando mi avvicinerò a lui e lo bacerò. Allora potrete prenderlo facilmente!»
45Perciò, appena arrivati, Giuda si avvicinò a Gesù e gli disse: «Maestro!» poi lo baciò.
46Allora gli altri furono addosso a Gesù e lo immobilizzarono. 47Ma qualcuno sfoderò una spada e ferì un servo del sommo sacerdote, mozzandogli un orecchio.
48Gesù chiese loro: «Sono un delinquente così pericoloso da venire a prendermi armati fino ai denti? 49Perché non mi avete arrestato nel tempio? Tutti i giorni io ero là ad insegnare. Ma queste cose stanno accadendo, perché si avverino le profezie che mi riguardano».
50Allora tutti i discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono via. 51-52Seguiva Gesù un giovane che indossava soltanto una camicia di lino. Quando cercarono di prendere anche lui, egli lasciò cadere la camicia e se ne scappò via completamente nudo.
Pietro nega di conoscere Gesù
53Gesù fu condotto a casa del sommo sacerdote, dove ben presto si riunirono tutti i capi sacerdoti e gli altri capi religiosi. 54Pietro, che lo seguiva a distanza, era riuscito ad entrare nel cortile della casa del sommo sacerdote; e andò a sedersi fra i servi, a scaldarsi accanto al fuoco.
55Intanto, i capi sacerdoti e la Corte Suprema Ebraica al completo stavano cercando unʼaccusa contro Gesù per condannarlo a morte. Ma i loro sforzi erano vani. 56Molti testimoni deponevano il falso, ma si contraddicevano a vicenda.
57Infine si alzarono alcuni uomini, anchʼessi per accusare falsamente Gesù. Dissero: 58«Abbiamo sentito che diceva: “Distruggerò questo tempio costruito dagli uomini ed in tre giorni ne costruirò un altro, fatto senza mano dʼuomo!”» 59Ma neppure in questo caso le testimonianze concordavano.
60Allora il sommo sacerdote si alzò davanti alla corte e chiese a Gesù: «Perché non rispondi a questa accusa? Che cosa hai da dire in tua discolpa?»
61Gesù non rispose. Allora il sommo sacerdote gli chiese: «Sei tu il Messia, Figlio di Dio?»
62Gesù rispose: «Sì, sono io, e voi mi vedrete sedere alla destra di Dio e tornare in terra sulle nuvole del cielo».
63-64Allora il sommo sacerdote si strappò i vestiti, gridando: «Di che cosa avete bisogno ancora? Perché aspettare dei testimoni? Voi stessi avete udito la sua bestemmia! Qual è il vostro verdetto?» La votazione per la condanna a morte fu unanime.
65Alcuni di loro si misero a sputargli addosso, poi lo bendarono e cominciarono a dargli dei pugni in faccia. «Chi ti ha colpito stavolta, profeta?» lo deridevano. E perfino le guardie lo presero a pugni, mentre lo portavano via.
66-67Nel frattempo, Pietro era rimasto di sotto, nel cortile. Ad un certo punto una delle serve del sommo sacerdote lo vide che si scaldava intorno al fuoco.
La donna lo guardò da vicino, poi lo apostrofò: «Anche tu eri con Gesù di Nazaret!»
68Pietro negò: «Non so neppure di che cosa stai parlando!» disse, e si allontanò verso il cortile. Proprio allora il gallo cantò.
69La serva lo vide che se ne stava là e cominciò a dire agli altri: «Eccolo là! Quello è un discepolo di Gesù!»
70Pietro negò di nuovo. Poco dopo, altre persone che se ne stavano in piedi attorno al fuoco cominciarono a dire a Pietro: «Sì che sei uno di loro, perché vieni dalla Galilea!»
71Pietro cominciò a maledire e a spergiurare, gridando: «Non lo conosco neppure il tizio di cui parlate!»
72Fu allora che il gallo cantò la seconda volta. Improvvisamente Pietro ricordò le parole di Gesù: «Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi avrai rinnegato per la terza volta».
E Pietro, sconsolato, pianse.
