Judas agrees to betray Jesus
1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, 2and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper
7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.’
9‘Where do you want us to prepare for it?’ they asked.
10He replied, ‘As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11and say to the owner of the house, “The Teacher asks: where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” 12He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.’
13They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.’
17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you. 18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’
19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’
20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.22:19,20 Some manuscripts do not have given for you… poured out for you. 21But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!’ 23They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31‘Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’
33But he replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’
34Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.’
35Then Jesus asked them, ‘When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?’
‘Nothing,’ they answered.
36He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37It is written: “And he was numbered with the transgressors”22:37 Isaiah 53:12; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfilment.’
38The disciples said, ‘See, Lord, here are two swords.’
‘That’s enough!’ he replied.
Jesus prays on the Mount of Olives
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On reaching the place, he said to them, ‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation.’ 41He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’ 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.22:43,44 Many early manuscripts do not have verses 43 and 44.
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46‘Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’
Jesus arrested
47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus asked him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’
49When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, ‘Lord, should we strike with our swords?’ 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51But Jesus answered, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, ‘Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’
Peter disowns Jesus
54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant-girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, ‘This man was with him.’
57But he denied it. ‘Woman, I don’t know him,’ he said.
58A little later someone else saw him and said, ‘You also are one of them.’
‘Man, I am not!’ Peter replied.
59About an hour later another asserted, ‘Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.’
60Peter replied, ‘Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ Just as he was speaking, the cock crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the cock crows today, you will disown me three times.’ 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The guards mock Jesus
63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and demanded, ‘Prophesy! Who hit you?’ 65And they said many other insulting things to him.
Jesus before Pilate and Herod
66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67‘If you are the Messiah,’ they said, ‘tell us.’
Jesus answered, ‘If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.’
70They all asked, ‘Are you then the Son of God?’
He replied, ‘You say that I am.’
71Then they said, ‘Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.’
Judas acuerda traicionar a Jesús

1Se aproximaba la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, llamada la Pascua. 2Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley buscaban algún modo de acabar con Jesús, porque temían al pueblo. 3Entonces entró Satanás en Judas, uno de los doce, al que llamaban Iscariote. 4Este fue a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los capitanes del templo para tratar con ellos cómo les entregaría a Jesús. 5Ellos se alegraron y acordaron darle dinero. 6Él aceptó, y comenzó a buscar una oportunidad para entregarles a Jesús cuando no hubiera gente.

7Cuando llegó el día de la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, en que debía sacrificarse el cordero de la Pascua, 8Jesús envió a Pedro y a Juan, diciéndoles:
―Id y haced los preparativos para que comamos la Pascua.
9―¿Dónde quieres que la preparemos? —le preguntaron.
10―Mirad —contestó él—: al entrar en la ciudad os saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Seguidlo hasta la casa en que entre, 11y decid al dueño de la casa: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿Dónde está la sala en la que voy a comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?” 12Él os mostrará en la planta alta una sala amplia y amueblada. Preparad allí la cena.
13Ellos se fueron y encontraron todo tal como les había dicho Jesús. Así que prepararon la Pascua.
14Cuando llegó la hora, Jesús y sus apóstoles se sentaron a la mesa. 15Entonces les dijo:
―He tenido muchísimos deseos de comer esta Pascua con vosotros antes de padecer, 16pues os digo que no volveré a comerla hasta que tenga su pleno cumplimiento en el reino de Dios.
17Luego tomó la copa, dio gracias y dijo:
―Tomad esto y repartidlo entre vosotros. 18Os digo que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta que venga el reino de Dios.
19También tomó pan y, después de dar gracias, lo partió, se lo dio y dijo:
―Este pan es mi cuerpo, entregado por vosotros; haced esto en memoria de mí.
20De la misma manera tomó la copa después de la cena, y dijo:
―Esta copa es el nuevo pacto en mi sangre, que es derramada por vosotros. 21Pero sabed que la mano del que va a traicionarme está con la mía, sobre la mesa. 22A la verdad el Hijo del hombre se irá según está decretado, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona!
23Entonces comenzaron a preguntarse unos a otros quién de ellos haría esto.
24Tuvieron además un altercado sobre cuál de ellos sería el más importante. 25Jesús les dijo:
―Los reyes de las naciones oprimen a sus súbditos, y los que ejercen autoridad sobre ellos se llaman a sí mismos benefactores. 26No sea así entre vosotros. Al contrario, el mayor debe comportarse como el menor, y el que manda como el que sirve. 27Porque, ¿quién es más importante, el que está a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No lo es el que está sentado a la mesa? Sin embargo, yo estoy entre vosotros como uno que sirve. 28Ahora bien, vosotros sois los que habéis estado siempre a mi lado en mis pruebas. 29Por eso, yo mismo os concedo un reino, así como mi Padre me lo concedió a mí, 30para que comáis y bebáis a mi mesa en mi reino, y os sentéis en tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.
31»Simón, Simón, mira que Satanás ha pedido zarandearos como si fuerais trigo. 32Pero yo he orado por ti, para que no falle tu fe. Y tú, cuando te hayas vuelto a mí, fortalece a tus hermanos».
33―Señor —respondió Pedro—, estoy dispuesto a ir contigo tanto a la cárcel como a la muerte.
34―Pedro, te digo que hoy mismo, antes de que cante el gallo, tres veces negarás que me conoces.
35Luego Jesús dijo a todos:
―Cuando os envié sin monedero ni bolsa ni sandalias, ¿acaso os faltó algo?
―Nada —respondieron.
36―Ahora, en cambio, el que tenga un monedero, que lo lleve; así mismo el que tenga una bolsa. Y el que nada tenga, que venda su manto y compre una espada. 37Porque os digo que tiene que cumplirse en mí aquello que está escrito: “Y fue contado entre los transgresores”.22:37 Is 53:12 En efecto, lo que se ha escrito de mí se está cumpliendo.22:37 En efecto … cumpliendo. Lit. Porque lo que es acerca de mí tiene fin.
38―Mira, Señor —le señalaron los discípulos—, aquí hay dos espadas.
―¡Basta! —les contestó.
Jesús ora en el monte de los Olivos
22:40-46 – Mt 26:36-46; Mr 14:32-42
39Jesús salió de la ciudad y, como de costumbre, se dirigió al monte de los Olivos, y sus discípulos lo siguieron. 40Cuando llegaron al lugar, les dijo: «Orad para no caer en tentación». 41Entonces se separó de ellos a una buena distancia,22:41 a una buena distancia. Lit. como a un tiro de piedra. se arrodilló y empezó a orar: 42«Padre, si quieres, no me hagas beber este trago amargo;22:42 no … amargo. Lit. quita de mí esta copa. pero no se cumpla mi voluntad, sino la tuya». 43Entonces se le apareció un ángel del cielo para fortalecerlo. 44Pero, como estaba angustiado, se puso a orar con más fervor, y su sudor era como gotas de sangre que caían a tierra.22:44 Var. no incluye vv. 43 y 44.
45Cuando terminó de orar y volvió a los discípulos, los encontró dormidos, agotados por la tristeza. 46«¿Por qué estáis durmiendo? —les exhortó—. Levantaos y orad para no caer en tentación».
Arresto de Jesús

47Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando se apareció una turba, y al frente iba uno de los doce, el que se llamaba Judas. Este se acercó a Jesús para besarlo, 48pero Jesús le preguntó:
―Judas, ¿con un beso traicionas al Hijo del hombre?
49Los discípulos que lo rodeaban, al darse cuenta de lo que pasaba, dijeron:
―Señor, ¿atacamos con la espada?
50Y uno de ellos hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole la oreja derecha.
51―¡Dejadlos! —ordenó Jesús.
Entonces tocó la oreja al hombre, y lo sanó. 52Luego dijo a los jefes de los sacerdotes, a los capitanes del templo y a los ancianos, que habían venido a prenderlo:
―¿Acaso soy un bandido,22:52 bandido. Alt. insurgente. para que vengáis contra mí con espadas y palos? 53Todos los días estaba con vosotros en el templo, y no os atrevisteis a ponerme las manos encima. Pero ya ha llegado vuestra hora, cuando reinan las tinieblas.
Pedro niega a Jesús

54Prendieron entonces a Jesús y lo llevaron a la casa del sumo sacerdote. Pedro los seguía de lejos. 55Pero luego, cuando encendieron una fogata en medio del patio y se sentaron alrededor, Pedro se les unió. 56Una criada lo vio allí sentado a la lumbre, lo miró detenidamente y dijo:
―Este estaba con él.
57Pero él lo negó.
―Muchacha, yo no lo conozco.
58Poco después lo vio otro y afirmó:
―Tú también eres uno de ellos.
―¡No, hombre, no lo soy! —contestó Pedro.
59Como una hora más tarde, otro lo acusó:
―Seguro que este estaba con él; pues también es galileo.
60―¡Hombre, no sé de qué estás hablando! —replicó Pedro.
En el mismo momento en que dijo eso, cantó el gallo. 61El Señor se volvió y miró directamente a Pedro. Entonces Pedro se acordó de lo que el Señor le había dicho: «Hoy mismo, antes de que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces». 62Y saliendo de allí, lloró amargamente.
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús

63Los hombres que vigilaban a Jesús comenzaron a burlarse de él y a golpearlo. 64Le vendaron los ojos, y le increpaban:
―¡Adivina quién te pegó!
65Y le lanzaban muchos otros insultos.

66Al amanecer, se reunieron los ancianos del pueblo, tanto los jefes de los sacerdotes como los maestros de la ley, e hicieron comparecer a Jesús ante el Consejo.
67―Si eres el Cristo, dínoslo —le exigieron.
Jesús les contestó:
―Si os lo dijera, no me creeríais 68y, si os hiciera preguntas, no me contestaríais. 69Pero de ahora en adelante el Hijo del hombre estará sentado a la derecha del Dios Todopoderoso.
70―¿Eres tú, entonces, el Hijo de Dios? —le preguntaron a una voz.
―Vosotros mismos lo decís.
71―¿Para qué necesitamos más testimonios? —resolvieron—. Acabamos de oírlo de sus propios labios.
