Samson’s vengeance on the Philistines
1Later on, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. He said, ‘I’m going to my wife’s room.’ But her father would not let him go in.
2‘I was so sure you hated her,’ he said, ‘that I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.’
3Samson said to them, ‘This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.’ 4So he went out and caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch to every pair of tails, 5lit the torches and let the foxes loose in the standing corn of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks and standing corn, together with the vineyards and olive groves.
6When the Philistines asked, ‘Who did this?’ they were told, ‘Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.’
So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death. 7Samson said to them, ‘Since you’ve acted like this, I swear that I won’t stop until I get my revenge on you.’ 8He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock of Etam.
9The Philistines went up and camped in Judah, spreading out near Lehi. 10The people of Judah asked, ‘Why have you come to fight us?’
‘We have come to take Samson prisoner,’ they answered, ‘to do to him as he did to us.’
11Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, ‘Don’t you realise that the Philistines are rulers over us? What have you done to us?’
He answered, ‘I merely did to them what they did to me.’
12They said to him, ‘We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.’
Samson said, ‘Swear to me that you won’t kill me yourselves.’
13‘Agreed,’ they answered. ‘We will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.’ So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock. 14As he approached Lehi, the Philistines came towards him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands. 15Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.
16Then Samson said,
‘With a donkey’s jawbone
I have made donkeys of them.15:16 Or made a heap or two; the Hebrew for donkey sounds like the Hebrew for heap.
With a donkey’s jawbone
I have killed a thousand men.’
17When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.15:17 Ramath Lehi means jawbone hill.
18Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord, ‘You have given your servant this great victory. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?’ 19Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived. So the spring was called En Hakkore,15:19 En Hakkore means caller’s spring. and it is still there in Lehi.
20Samson led15:20 Traditionally judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
Samson îi învinge pe filisteni

3Samson le‑a zis:

4Apoi Samson s‑a dus și a prins trei sute de vulpi. A luat niște torțe, a legat vulpile coadă de coadă și a pus câte o torță la mijloc, între două cozi. 5A aprins torțele și a dat drumul vulpilor în holdele filistenilor. În acest fel au ars atât căpițele, cât și holdele și livezile de măslini.
6Atunci filistenii au întrebat:
– Cine a făcut fapta aceasta?
Li s‑a răspuns:
– Samson, ginerele timnitului, pentru că acesta i‑a luat soția și i‑a dat‑o prietenului său.
Filistenii s‑au suit și au ars‑o pe ea și pe tatăl ei.
7Samson le‑a zis: „Pentru că ați făcut aceasta, nu mă voi opri până nu mă voi răzbuna pe voi!“ 8Și i‑a lovit la picioare și la coapse8 O sintagmă semitică, probabil un argou militar, sensul fiind nesigur. Posibil: Și i‑a bătut rău de tot.; a fost un mare măcel. Apoi el s‑a coborât și a locuit în grota din Stânca lui Etam.
9După aceea, filistenii s‑au suit și și‑au așezat tabăra în Iuda. Ei s‑au răspândit până la Lehi.
10Bărbații lui Iuda i‑au întrebat:
– De ce v‑ați suit împotriva noastră?
Ei le‑au răspuns:
– Ne‑am suit ca să‑l legăm pe Samson și să‑i facem așa cum ne‑a făcut și el nouă.
11Atunci trei mii de bărbați ai lui Iuda au coborât la grota din Stânca lui Etam și l‑au întrebat pe Samson:
– N‑ai știut că filistenii stăpânesc peste noi? De ce ne‑ai făcut una ca asta?
El le‑a răspuns:
– După cum mi‑au făcut ei mie, așa le‑am făcut și eu.
12Ei i‑au zis:
– Am coborât să te legăm și să te dăm în mâinile filistenilor.
Samson le‑a zis:
– Jurați‑mi că nu‑mi veți lua viața.
13Ei i‑au răspuns, zicând:
– Doar te vom lega și te vom da în mâinile lor, dar cu siguranță, nu te vom omorî.
L‑au legat cu două funii noi și l‑au scos din stâncă. 14Când a ajuns la Lehi, filistenii i‑au ieșit înainte strigând. Atunci Duhul Domnului a venit peste el și funiile pe care le avea la brațe s‑au făcut ca pânza arsă în foc, iar legăturile i‑au căzut de la mâini. 15A găsit o falcă de măgar, care nu era uscată încă, a luat‑o în mână și a ucis cu ea o mie de oameni.
16Apoi Samson a zis:
„Cu o falcă de măgar,
o grămadă, două grămezi16 Sau: Cu o falcă de măgar am făcut măgari din ei; termenii ebraici pentru măgar și pentru grămadă sună la fel.;
cu o falcă de măgar
am ucis o mie de oameni!“
17După ce a terminat de vorbit, a aruncat falca din mână. Locul acela a fost numit Ramat-Lehi17 Ramat-Lehi înseamnă Înălțimea Fălcii..
18Fiindu‑i foarte sete, L‑a chemat pe Domnul și I‑a zis: „Tu ai dat prin mâna robului tău această mare victorie, iar acum să mor de sete și să cad în mâinile celor necircumciși?“ 19Dumnezeu a despicat groapa19 O adâncitură circulară în suprafața pământului, în care oamenii locului sfărâmau pietre pentru mortar. Verbul din care derivă termenul ebraic înseamnă a pisa; a sfărâma; a măcina. din Lehi și din ea a ieșit apă. El a băut și duhul lui și‑a revenit și s‑a înviorat. De aceea au pus acelui izvor numele En‑Hakkore19 En‑Hakkore înseamnă Izvorul celui ce strigă.; el se află în Lehi și astăzi.
20Samson a judecat20 Cu sensul de a conduce. Israelul timp de douăzeci de ani, în zilele filistenilor.
