Joshua’s farewell to the leaders
1After a long time had passed and the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man, 2summoned all Israel – their elders, leaders, judges and officials – and said to them: ‘I am very old. 3You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the Lord your God who fought for you. 4Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain – the nations I conquered – between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. 5The Lord your God himself will push them out for your sake. He will drive them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the Lord your God promised you.
6‘Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. 7Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. 8But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now.
9‘The Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no-one has been able to withstand you. 10One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised. 11So be very careful to love the Lord your God.
12‘But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, 13then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the Lord your God has given you.
14‘Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. 15But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you. 16If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.’
Iosua îl îndeamnă pe Israel să fie credincios Domnului
1Trecuse o lungă perioadă de când Domnul dăduse odihnă lui Israel din partea tuturor dușmanilor care‑l înconjurau, iar Iosua era bătrân și înaintat în vârstă. 2Atunci Iosua a chemat tot Israelul, – pe bătrânii lui, conducătorii lui, judecătorii lui și supraveghetorii lui –, și le‑a zis: „Eu sunt bătrân acum și înaintat în vârstă; 3voi ați văzut ce a făcut Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, tuturor acestor neamuri, de dragul vostru, fiindcă Însuși Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, a luptat pentru voi. 4Semințiilor voastre le‑am dat ca moștenire toate teritoriile acestor neamuri care au mai rămas, începând de la Iordan, toate neamurile pe care le‑am nimicit, până la Marea cea Mare4 Marea Mediterană., în partea de apus. 5Însuși Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, le va alunga dinaintea voastră. El le va îndepărta dinaintea voastră, iar voi le veți lua țara în stăpânire, așa cum v‑a promis Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru.
6Adunați‑vă toată puterea ca să păziți și să împliniți toate cele scrise în Cartea Legii lui Moise, fără să vă abateți nici la dreapta, nici la stânga, 7astfel încât să nu vă amestecați cu neamurile acestea, care au rămas printre voi! Să nu amintiți numele dumnezeilor lor și să nu jurați pe numele lor! Să nu le slujiți și să nu vă închinați înaintea lor, 8ci să vă alipiți de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, așa cum ați făcut până în ziua aceasta.
9Domnul a alungat dinaintea voastră neamuri mari și puternice, astfel că nimeni nu a putut să vă stea împotrivă până în ziua aceasta. 10Un singur om dintre voi punea pe fugă o mie de dușmani, fiindcă Însuși Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, lupta pentru voi, așa cum vă promisese.
11Vegheați deci cu luare-aminte asupra sufletelor voastre, ca să‑L iubiți pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, 12căci dacă vă veți abate și vă veți alipi de rămășița acestor neamuri, care au rămas printre voi, dacă vă veți uni cu ele prin căsătorii și veți intra la ele și ele la voi12 Eufemism cu sensul de a avea relații sexuale., 13să știți că Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, nu va mai alunga aceste neamuri dinaintea voastră. Ele vă vor fi atunci o cursă și un laț, vor fi ca un bici pe spatele vostru și ca niște spini în ochii voștri, până veți pieri din această țară bună, pe care v‑a dat‑o Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru.
14Iată că astăzi mă duc pe calea întregului pământ. Recunoașteți din toată inima și din tot sufletul vostru că nu a rămas neîmplinită niciuna din promisiunile bune pe care vi le‑a făcut Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru. Toate s‑au împlinit și nu a rămas neîmplinită nici măcar una. 15Însă așa cum Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, a împlinit toate promisiunile bune pe care vi le‑a făcut, tot așa Domnul va aduce asupra voastră toate lucrurile rele despre care ați fost avertizați, până când veți fi nimiciți din țara aceasta bună, pe care v‑a dat‑o Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru. 16Dacă veți încălca legământul Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, pe care El vi l‑a poruncit și vă veți duce să slujiți altor dumnezei și să vă închinați înaintea lor, atunci Domnul Se va aprinde de mânie împotriva voastră și veți pieri repede din țara cea bună pe care v‑a dat‑o.“
