Division of the land west of the Jordan
1Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. 2Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest, 4for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes – Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasture-lands for their flocks and herds. 5So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Land allotted to Caleb
6Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, ‘You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, 8but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people sink. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. 9So on that day Moses swore to me, “The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children for ever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.”14:9 Deut. 1:36
10‘Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.’
13Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 14So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. 15(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)
Then the land had rest from war.

1Acestea sunt teritoriile primite drept moștenire de către fiii lui Israel în țara Canaan, teritorii împărțite de preotul Elazar, de Iosua, fiul lui Nun, și de căpeteniile de familie ale semințiilor fiilor lui Israel. 2Moștenirea le‑a fost dată prin sorți, așa cum poruncise Domnul prin Moise, pentru cele nouă seminții și jumătate. 3Căci Moise dăduse o moștenire celor două seminții și jumătate, de cealaltă parte a Iordanului, însă leviților nu le dăduse nicio moștenire printre ei. 4Căci urmașii lui Iosif erau două seminții, – Manase și Efraim –, iar ei nu dăduseră leviților niciun teritoriu în țară, ci doar cetăți pentru locuit, împreună cu pășunile acestora pentru turmele și averile lor. 5Fiii lui Israel făcuseră așa cum Domnul îi poruncise lui Moise, și împărțiseră țara.
Teritoriul moștenit de Caleb
6Fiii lui Iuda s‑au apropiat de Iosua la Ghilgal, iar Caleb, fiul chenizitului Iefune, i‑a zis: „Tu știi ce i‑a spus Domnul lui Moise, omul lui Dumnezeu, despre mine și despre tine, pe când eram la Kadeș-Barnea. 7Eu aveam patruzeci de ani atunci când Moise, robul Domnului, m‑a trimis din Kadeș-Barnea ca să cercetez țara, iar eu i‑am adus vești potrivit cu ceea ce era în inima mea. 8Frații mei care se suiseră împreună cu mine au înmuiat inima poporului, însă eu L‑am urmat pe deplin pe Domnul, Dumnezeul meu. 9În acea zi, Moise mi‑a jurat, zicând: «Teritoriul pe care l‑ai străbătut cu piciorul tău va fi moștenirea ta și a urmașilor tăi pentru totdeauna, pentru că ai urmat pe deplin calea Domnului, Dumnezeul tău.»9 Vezi Deut. 1:36.
10Acum, iată că Domnul m‑a ținut în viață așa cum a spus. Sunt patruzeci și cinci de ani, de când Domnul i‑a spus aceste cuvinte lui Moise, pe vremea când Israel străbătea pustia și iată‑mă astăzi, în vârstă de optzeci și cinci de ani! 11Sunt la fel de puternic astăzi ca și în ziua în care Moise m‑a trimis și am tot atâta vigoare cât aveam atunci pentru a merge la luptă11 Sau: atunci fie pentru luptă, fie pentru călătorie (lit.: fie pentru luptă, fie pentru a ieși și a intra).. 12Dă‑mi deci muntele acesta despre care a vorbit Domnul în ziua aceea! Căci tu însuți ai auzit încă de pe atunci că acolo trăiesc anachiții12, 15 Vezi nota de la 11:21., iar cetățile sunt înalte și fortificate. Poate că Domnul va fi cu mine și îi voi alunga, așa cum a promis Domnul.“
13Atunci Iosua l‑a binecuvântat pe Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, și i‑a dat Hebronul ca moștenire. 14De aceea, Hebronul a rămas moștenirea lui Caleb, fiul chenizitului Iefune, până în ziua aceasta, pentru că L‑a urmat pe deplin pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel. 15Înainte, Hebronul se numise Chiriat-Arba15 Chiriat-Arba înseamnă Cetatea lui Arba.; Arba fusese un om cu seamă printre anachiți.
După aceea țara s‑a odihnit de război.
