The death of Lazarus
1Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay ill, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’
4When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This illness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.’ 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was two more days, 7and then he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’
8‘But Rabbi,’ they said, ‘a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?’
9Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the day-time will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. 10It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.’
11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’
12His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14So then he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’
16Then Thomas (also known as Didymus11:16 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’
Jesus comforts the sisters of Lazarus
17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Now Bethany was less than two miles11:18 Or about 3 kilometres from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.’
23Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’
24Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’
25Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’
27‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’
28After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. ‘The Teacher is here,’ she said, ‘and is asking for you.’ 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked.
‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied.
35Jesus wept.
36Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’
37But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’
Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead
38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39‘Take away the stone,’ he said.
‘But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.’
40Then Jesus said, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?’
41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’
43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth round his face.
Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’
The plot to kill Jesus
45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
‘What are we accomplishing?’ they asked. ‘Here is this man performing many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.’
49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, ‘You know nothing at all! 50You do not realise that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.’
51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. 53So from that day on they plotted to take his life.
54Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. 56They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, ‘What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?’ 57But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

ラザロの死
1-2さて、ラザロという名前の人が病気にかかっていました。彼はマリヤとその姉マルタの兄弟で、ベタニヤという村に住んでいました。このマリヤは、イエスの足に高価な香油を注ぎ、それを髪でぬぐったことで知られる女性です。そのマリヤの兄弟ラザロが床に伏していました。 3マルタとマリヤが、イエスのもとに使いをよこしました。「先生。あなたが心にかけてくださっているラザロが重い病気にかかり、明日をも知れない状態です。」 4この知らせを聞いたイエスは言われました。「この病気は、ラザロの死で終わるものではありません。神の栄光が現されるためです。それによって神の子が、栄光を受けるのです。」 5イエスは、マルタたち三人を心から愛しておられました。 6けれども、なぜか、なお二日間そこにとどまって、なかなか腰を上げようとはなさいません。 7二日たって、ようやく、「さあ、ユダヤに行きましょう」と弟子たちに言われました。 8ところが、もうれつな反対が返ってきたのです。「なんてことを、先生！ つい先日、ユダヤ人の指導者たちが先生を殺そうとしたのをお忘れですか。それなのに、またのこのこと出かけて行くおつもりですか。」 9「昼間は十二時間あります。その間に歩けば安全で、つまずくこともありません。 10ところが、夜歩いたらとても危険です。暗くて足を踏みはずすかもしれませんから。」イエスはこう言って、 11さらに続けられました。「友のラザロが眠っています。彼を起こしに行かなくては。」 12-13これを、ラザロがぐっすり眠ったものと勘違いした弟子たちは、「じゃあ、病状はよくなっているんですね」と言いました。しかしイエスは、ラザロが死んだと言われたのです。 14そこで、今度ははっきりと言われました。「ラザロは死んだのです。 15わたしがその場に居合わせなくてよかったのです。これでまた、あなたがたがわたしを信じる機会が増えるのですから。さあ、彼のところへ出かけましょう。」 16そこで、「ふたご」とあだ名が付けられているトマスが、「みんなで行って、危ないことがあるなら、先生とごいっしょに死のうじゃないか」と、仲間の弟子たちに言いました。
17一行がベタニヤに着いてみると、ラザロはすでに墓に葬られ、四日もたっていました。 18ベタニヤは、エルサレムからわずか三キロほどの所だったので、 19エルサレムからも大ぜいのユダヤ人たちが弔問に詰めかけていました。マルタとマリヤが慰めのことばを受けているところへ、 20イエスの到着が知らされました。マルタはそれを聞くと、取る物も取りあえず、迎えに行きました。ところが、マリヤは家の中にじっと座ったままでした。 21マルタはイエスに向かって訴えました。「先生。あなたがいてくださったら、ラザロは死なずにすんだでしょうに。 22今でも、あなたが神様にお求めになるなら、神様はそのとおりにしてくださるでしょう。」 23イエスは言われました。「そのとおりです。ラザロは生き返るのです。」 24マルタは言いました。「はい。いつかすべての人が復活する日には、もちろん……。」 25しかし、イエスは言われました。「このわたしが、死人を生き返らせ、もう一度いのちを与えるのです。わたしを信じる者は、たとえほかの人と同じように死んでも、また生きるのです。 26わたしを信じて永遠のいのちを持っている者は、決して滅びることがありません。このことを信じますか、マルタ。」 27「はい、先生。あなたこそ、長いあいだ待ち続けてきた神の子キリストだと信じております。」 28マルタは家に戻り、マリヤをわきへ呼んでそっと耳うちしました。「先生がすぐそこにいらしていて、あなたを呼んでおられるわよ。」 29そこでマリヤは、すぐにイエスのところへ出て行きました。
ラザロが生き返る
30さて、イエスはまだ村に入らず、マルタが出迎えた場所におられました。 31マリヤを慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、彼女がそそくさと出て行くのを見て、きっと墓へ泣きに行くのだろうと思って、あとについて行きました。 32マリヤはイエスのところまで来ると、くずおれるように足もとにひれ伏し、涙ながらに言いました。「ああ、先生。あなたさえいてくださったら、ラザロは、ラザロはまだ生きていたでしょうに。」 33イエスは、目の前でマリヤが泣き伏し、ユダヤ人たちもいっしょに嘆き悲しんでいるのに強く心を動かされ、 34「ラザロはどこですか」とお聞きになりました。「来て、ごらんください。」 35イエスの目に涙があふれました。 36そこで、ユダヤ人たちはこう言い合いました。「お気の毒に。どんなにラザロを愛しておられたことだろう。」 37しかし、「盲人の目を開けたこの人が、ラザロを生かしておくことはできなかったのかね」と、非難めいて言う人もいました。
38これを聞いたイエスは、またも心に深い憤りを感じながら、墓に着きました。それはほら穴で、入り口には重い石が立てかけてありました。 39「さあ、石をわきにどけなさい。」イエスは人々をうながされました。マルタがあわてて止めました。「でも、もうひどいにおいがしています。なにしろ、死んでから今日で四日ですもの。」 40イエスはマルタにおっしゃいました。「もし信じるなら神のすばらしい奇跡を見る、と言ったはずです。」 41人々は言われるままに石を取りのけました。イエスは天を見上げ、「父よ。願いを聞いてくださってありがとうございます。 42あなたがいつもわたしの願いを聞いてくださることはわかっています。ただ、あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを、ここに立っているみんなが信じるように、こう申し上げたのです」と祈られました。 43それから、大声で、「ラザロよ。出て来なさい！」とお命じになりました。 44すると、どうでしょう。ラザロが、手足を布で巻かれた姿のまま出て来たではありませんか！ 顔も布で包まれたままです。イエスはあっけにとられている人々に言われました。「さあ、早く布をほどいてやって、帰らせなさい。」
45マリヤについて来てこの出来事を見た多くのユダヤ人が、イエスを信じるようになりました。 46しかし、パリサイ人たちのところへ行き、事細かにこのことを報告する者も何人かいました。
47そこで祭司長やパリサイ人たちは、この問題を協議するため、さっそく議会を召集し議論しました。「あの男が奇跡を行っているというのに、いったい何をぐずぐずしているのか。 48このまま放っておいたら、国民一人残らずあの男を信じるようになってしまうぞ。そんなことにでもなったら、ローマ軍が踏み込んで来てわれわれを殺し、われわれの土地も国民も乗っ取るだろう。」 49すると、その年の大祭司カヤパが、業をにやして言いました。「ばかを言うな。こんなこともわからないのか。 50全国民の代わりに、彼一人に死んでもらえば事はすむのだ。国民全体が滅びるなんて、冗談じゃない。」 51イエスが全国民の代わりに死ぬことを、大祭司が預言したのです。カヤパは別の動機から、無意識のうちに、そのように言ったのです。 52これはイエスが、イスラエル人ばかりか、世界中に散らされているすべての神の子どもたちのためにも死んでくださるという預言でした。 53この時から、ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、イエスを殺す計画をあれこれ練り始めました。
54そんなこともあって、イエスはユダヤ人の間でおおっぴらに活動することをやめ、エルサレムをあとにされました。そして荒野に近いエフライムの村で、しばらく弟子たちと共に身を潜めておられました。
55ユダヤ人の過越の祭りが近づきました。この時は、多くの人々が各地からエルサレムに集まります。みな祭りの始まる前にきよめの儀式をすませようと、数日前には着くように出かけて来るのです。 56人々は、イエスに会いたいと思いました。宮のあちこちで、「どうだろうね。あの方は祭りにいらっしゃるかな」と、しきりにうわさし合う声が聞こえます。 57一方、祭司長やパリサイ人たちはイエスを逮捕することしか頭になく、「イエスを見かけた者は直ちに届け出よ」という命令を出していました。
