The Lord speaks
1Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:
2‘Who is this that obscures my plans
with words without knowledge?
3Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
4‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone –
7while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels38:7 Hebrew the sons of God shouted for joy?
8‘Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
9when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
11when I said, “This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt”?
12‘Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,
13that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked out of it?
14The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15The wicked are denied their light,
and their upraised arm is broken.
16‘Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
18Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.
19‘What is the way to the abode of light?
And where does darkness reside?
20Can you take them to their places?
Do you know the paths to their dwellings?
21Surely you know, for you were already born!
You have lived so many years!
22‘Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of the hail,
23which I reserve for times of trouble,
for days of war and battle?
24What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
25Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,
26to water a land where no-one lives,
an uninhabited desert,
27to satisfy a desolate wasteland
and make it sprout with grass?
28Does the rain have a father?
Who fathers the drops of dew?
29From whose womb comes the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens
30when the waters become hard as stone,
when the surface of the deep is frozen?
31‘Can you bind the chains38:31 Septuagint; Hebrew beauty of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?
32Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons38:32 Or the morning star in its season
or lead out the Bear38:32 Or out Leo with its cubs?
33Do you know the laws of the heavens?
Can you set up God’s38:33 Or their dominion over the earth?
34‘Can you raise your voice to the clouds
and cover yourself with a flood of water?
35Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
Do they report to you, “Here we are”?
36Who gives the ibis wisdom38:36 That is, wisdom about the flooding of the Nile
or gives the cockerel understanding?38:36 That is, understanding of when to crow; the meaning of the Hebrew for this verse is uncertain.
37Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens
38when the dust becomes hard
and the clods of earth stick together?
39‘Do you hunt the prey for the lioness
and satisfy the hunger of the lions
40when they crouch in their dens
or lie in wait in a thicket?
41Who provides food for the raven
when its young cry out to God
and wander about for lack of food?
여호와의 말씀
1그때 여호와께서 폭풍 가운데서 욥에게 말씀하셨다.
2“무식한 말로 내 뜻을 흐리게 하는 자가 누구냐?
3이제 너는 남자답게 일어나 내가 묻는 말에 대답하라.
4내가 땅의 기초를 놓을 때에 너는 어디 있었느냐? 네가 그렇게 많이 알면 한번 말해 보아라.
5누가 그 크기를 정하였으며 누가 그 위에 측량줄을 대어 보았는지 너는 알고 있느냐?
6-7땅의 기초를 받치고 있는 것이 무엇이 냐? 새벽 별들이 함께 노래하며 38:6-7 원문에는 ‘하나님의 아들들이’하늘의 천사들이 기뻐 외치는 가운데 땅의 모퉁잇돌을 놓은 자가 누구냐?
8“바닷물이 깊은 곳에서 쏟아져 나올 때 누가 그 물을 막아 바다의 한계를 정하였느냐?
9-11그때 구름으로 바다를 덮고 흑암으로 그것을 감싸며 해안으로 그 한계를 정하여 ‘네가 여기까지만 오고 그 이상은 넘어가지 못한다. 너 교만한 물결은 여기서 멈춰라’ 하고 말한 자는 바로 나였다.
12네가 지금까지 한 번이라도 아침이 되라고 명령하여 동이 트게 한 적이 있느냐?
13네가 땅 끝까지 새벽 빛이 비치게 하여 악인들이 악을 멈추게 한 일이 있느냐?
14동이 트자 땅이 진흙에 도장을 친 것처럼 나타나고 그 모양은 주름잡힌 옷과 같으며
15그 빛은 악인들에게 너무 밝아 그들의 폭행을 저지한다.
16“네가 바다 근원에 들어가 보았느냐? 네가 바다 밑바닥을 걸어다녀 보았느냐?
17죽음의 문이 너에게 나타난 적이 있으며 네가 사망의 그늘진 문을 본 적이 있느냐?
18땅이 얼마나 넓은지 네가 이해할 수 있겠느냐? 네가 알면 나에게 말해 보아라.
19빛은 어디서 오며 어두움의 근원은 무엇인지 네가 알고 있느냐?
20너는 빛과 어두움의 범위가 얼마나 되는지 알고 있으며 그 근원까지 가는 길을 아느냐?
21네가 나이를 많이 먹었으니 알고 있을지도 모르겠다.
22“너는 눈 창고에 가 본 일이 있으며 우박 창고를 본 일이 있느냐?
23나는 이것들을 환난 때나 전쟁시를 위해서 저장해 놓았다.
24너는 빛이 확산되는 지점과 동풍이 땅으로 흩어지는 지점에 가 본 일이 있느냐?
25폭우가 흘러내려가는 골짜기 길을 누가 만들었으며 번개가 다니는 길을 누가 만들었느냐?
26누가 사람이 살지 않는 곳에 비를 내리며
27메마른 땅을 축축하게 하여 풀이 나게 하는가?
28비에게도 아비가 있느냐? 이슬 방울은 누가 낳았느냐?
29얼음과 서리의 어미는 누구냐?
30이것 때문에 물이 돌같이 굳어지고 해면이 얼게 된다.
31“네가 묘성을 한데 묶어 놓을 수 있으며 오리온 별자리의 띠를 풀어 놓을 수 있겠느냐?
32네가 계절마다 제때에 별을 이끌어낼 수 있으며 곰자리를 인도할 수 있겠느냐?
33네가 하늘의 법칙을 알고 그 법칙이 땅에 적용될 수 있도록 하겠느냐?
34너는 구름에게 큰 소리로 명령하여 그것이 비가 되어 네 위에 내리게 할 수 있겠느냐?
35네가 번개를 보내 그것으로 네가 가리키는 곳을 치게 할 수 있느냐?
36누가 마음에 지혜와 깨닫는 마음을 주었느냐?
37구름을 셀 수 있을 만큼 지혜로운 자가 누구며 하늘의 물병을 쏟아
38먼지나 티끌이 덩어리가 되게 할 수 있는 자가 누구냐?
39-40너는 사자들이 굴에 엎드려 있거나 숲속에 누워 기다리고 있을 때 그들의 먹이를 사냥하여 그 새끼들의 굶주린 배를 채워 줄 수 있겠느냐?
41까마귀 새끼가 배가 고파 버둥거리며 나를 향해 부르짖을 때 그것들을 위해서 먹을 것을 마련해 주는 자가 누구냐?”
