Prologue
1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2He had seven sons and three daughters, 3and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
4His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, ‘Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’ This was Job’s regular custom.
6One day the angels1:6 Hebrew the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan1:6 Hebrew satan means adversary. also came with them. 7The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’
Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming throughout the earth, going to and fro on it.’
8Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no-one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.’
9‘Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. 10‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.’
12The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the eldest brother’s house, 14a messenger came to Job and said, ‘The oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
16While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
17While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
18While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, ‘Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the eldest brother’s house, 19when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21and said:
‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I shall depart.1:21 Or shall return there
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.’
22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
욥과 그의 가족
1우스 땅에 욥이라는 사람이 살고 있었다. 그는 진실하고 정직하며 하나님을 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 악을 멀리하는 사람이었다.
2그에게는 일곱 아들과 세 딸이 있었으며
3그의 소유는 양 7,000마리, 낙타 3,000마리, 소 1:3 또는 ‘500겨리’1,000마리, 암나귀 500마리였다. 그리고 그는 많은 종도 거느리고 있어서 사실 동방에서 제일 가는 부자였다.
4욥의 아들들은 각자 생일이 돌아오면 자기 집에 잔치를 베풀고 형제들과 누이들을 모두 초대하여 함께 먹고 마시며 즐겼다.
5그 잔치가 끝날 때마다 욥은 그의 자녀들을 불러다가 그들을 성결하게 하고 아침 일찍 일어나 자녀 수대로 불에 태워 바치는 번제를 드렸다. 이것은 그가 “혹시 내 아들들이 범죄하여 마음으로라도 하나님을 떠나지 않았을까?” 하고 생각했기 때문이었다.
욥의 첫번째 시험
6어느 날 1:6 원문에는 ‘하나님의 아들들이’천사들이 여호와 앞에 나와 섰을 때 고소자인 사탄도 그들 가운데 와 있었다.
7그때 여호와께서 사탄에게 물었다. “네가 어디서 왔느냐?” “땅을 두루 돌아다니다가 왔습니다.”
8“네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐? 그처럼 진실하고 정직하며 나를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 악을 멀리하는 사람은 세상에 없다.”
9“욥이 하나님을 두려운 마음으로 섬기는 데에 어찌 이유가 없겠습니까?
10주께서는 항상 그와 그 가정과 그의 재산을 보호하고 그가 하는 모든 일에 축복해 주셔서 그의 가축이 온 땅을 덮을 만큼 부자가 되게 하셨습니다.
11그러나 그가 소유한 모든 것을 한번 빼앗아 보십시오. 그러면 당장 그가 정면으로 주를 저주할 것입니다.”
12“좋다. 네가 그의 소유를 네 마음대로 하여라. 그러나 그의 몸에는 손을 대지 말아라.” 그래서 사탄은 곧 여호와 앞에서 물러갔다.
13하루는 욥의 자녀들이 맏형의 집에 모여 식사를 같이하며 포도주를 마시고 있었다.
14이때 한 1:14 또는 ‘사자가’종이 욥에게 달려와서 말하였다. “우리는 소로 밭을 갈고 있었고 나귀는 주변 목초지에서 풀을 뜯어 먹고 있었습니다. 그런데
15갑자기 스바 사람들이 우리를 기습하여 소와 나귀를 다 빼앗아 가고 종들을 죽였습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.”
16그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 한 종이 와서 말하였다. “하나님의 불이 하늘에서 내려와 양떼와 종들을 모조리 태워 죽였습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.”
17그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 한 종이 와서 말하였다. “갈대아 사람들이 갑자기 우리를 기습하여 종들을 죽이고 낙타를 모조리 끌어갔습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.”
18그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 다른 한 종이 와서 말하였다. “주인의 자녀들이 맏아들의 집에서 식사를 같이하며 포도주를 마시고 있었는데
19갑자기 사막에서 태풍이 불어와 집 네 모퉁이가 무너져내려 그들이 다 죽고 말았습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.”
20그러자 욥은 일어나 자기 옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하며
21이렇게 말하였다. “내가 태어날 때 아무것도 가져온 것 없었으니 죽을 때에도 아무것도 가져가지 못하리라. 주신 자도 여호와시요 가져가신 자도 여호와시니 여호와의 이름이 찬양을 받으시기 원하노라.”
22이 모든 일을 당하고도 욥은 범죄하거나 하나님을 원망하지 않았다.
