1Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah42:1 Hebrew; Septuagint (see also 43:2) Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached 2Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, ‘Please hear our petition and pray to the Lord your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. 3Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.’
4‘I have heard you,’ replied Jeremiah the prophet. ‘I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.’
5Then they said to Jeremiah, ‘May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. 6Whether it is favourable or unfavourable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the Lord our God.’
7Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest. 9He said to them, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says: 10“If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you. 11Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. 12I will show you compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.”
13‘However, if you say, “We will not stay in this land,” and so disobey the Lord your God, 14and if you say, “No, we will go and live in Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the trumpet or be hungry for bread,” 15then hear the word of the Lord, you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die. 17Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague; not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.” 18This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “As my anger and wrath have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem, so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse42:18 That is, your name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that you are cursed. and an object of horror, a curse42:18 That is, your name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that you are cursed. and an object of reproach; you will never see this place again.”
19‘Remnant of Judah, the Lord has told you, “Do not go to Egypt.” Be sure of this: I warn you today 20that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, “Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.” 21I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you. 22So now, be sure of this: you will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place where you want to go to settle.’
1Entonces se acercaron Johanán, hijo de Carea, y Jezanías,42:1 Jezanías (TM). Azarías (LXX; véase 43:2). hijo de Osaías, junto con todos los oficiales del ejército y todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande, 2y dijeron al profeta Jeremías:
—Por favor, atiende a nuestra súplica y ruega al Señor tu Dios por todo este remanente. Como podrás darte cuenta, antes éramos muchos, pero ahora quedamos solo unos cuantos. 3Ruega para que el Señor tu Dios nos indique el camino que debemos seguir, y lo que debemos hacer.
4Jeremías respondió:
—Ya los he oído. Voy a rogar al Señor, al Dios de ustedes, tal como me lo han pedido. Les comunicaré todo lo que el Señor me diga y no les ocultaré absolutamente nada.
5Ellos dijeron a Jeremías:
—Que el Señor tu Dios, sea un testigo fiel y verdadero contra nosotros si no actuamos conforme a todo lo que él nos ordene por medio de ti. 6Sea o no de nuestro agrado, obedeceremos la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, a quien te enviamos a consultar. Así, al obedecer la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, nos irá bien.
7Diez días después, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías. 8Este llamó a Johanán, hijo de Carea, a todos los oficiales del ejército que lo acompañaban y a todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande 9y les dijo: «Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel, a quien ustedes me enviaron para interceder por ustedes: 10“Si se quedan en este país, yo los edificaré y no los derribaré, los plantaré y no los arrancaré, porque me duele haberles causado esa calamidad. 11No teman al rey de Babilonia, al que ahora temen —afirma el Señor—, no le teman, porque yo estoy con ustedes para salvarlos y librarlos de su poder. 12Yo tendré compasión de ustedes, y él también, y les permitirá volver a su tierra”».
13Pero si desobedecen la voz del Señor, Dios de ustedes, y dicen: «No nos quedaremos en esta tierra, 14sino que nos iremos a Egipto donde no veremos la guerra, ni escucharemos el sonido de la trompeta, ni pasaremos hambre y allí viviremos», 15entonces presten atención a la palabra del Señor, ustedes que son el remanente de Judá. Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: «Si insisten en trasladarse a Egipto para vivir allá, 16la guerra que tanto temen los alcanzará, el hambre que los aterra los seguirá de cerca hasta Egipto y en ese lugar morirán. 17Todos los que están empecinados en trasladarse a Egipto para vivir allá morirán por la guerra, el hambre y la plaga. Ninguno sobrevivirá ni escapará a la calamidad que haré caer sobre ellos». 18Porque así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: «Así como se ha derramado mi ira y mi furor sobre los habitantes de Jerusalén, así se derramará mi furor sobre ustedes si se van a Egipto. Se convertirán en objeto de maldición, de horror, de condenación y deshonra; nunca más volverán a ver este lugar».
19Remanente de Judá, el Señor les ha dicho que no vayan a Egipto. Sepan bien que hoy les hago una advertencia seria. 20Ustedes cometieron un error fatal cuando me enviaron al Señor, Dios de ustedes, y me dijeron: «Ruega por nosotros al Señor nuestro Dios, y comunícanos todo lo que él te diga para que lo cumplamos». 21Hoy se lo he hecho saber a ustedes, pero no han querido obedecer la voz del Señor su Dios, en nada de lo que él me encargó comunicarles. 22Por lo tanto, sepan bien que en el lugar donde quieren residir morirán por la guerra, el hambre y la plaga.
