Isaiah’s commission
1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one another:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’
4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’
8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’
And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’
9He said, ‘Go and tell this people:
‘ “Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.”
10Make the heart of this people calloused;
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.6:9,10 Hebrew; Septuagint “You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; / you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.” / 10 This people’s heart has become calloused; / they hardly hear with their ears, / and they have closed their eyes
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.’
11Then I said, ‘For how long, Lord?’
And he answered:
‘Until the cities lie ruined
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted
and the fields ruined and ravaged,
12until the Lord has sent everyone far away
and the land is utterly forsaken.
13And though a tenth remains in the land,
it will again be laid waste.
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps when they are cut down,
so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.’
A chamada de Isaías
1No ano em que morreu o rei Uzias, eu vi o Senhor! Estava sentado num trono sublime. O templo estava cheio com a sua glória e a aba do seu manto enchia todo o templo. 2Pairando sobre ele havia serafins6.2 Anjos., cada um com seis asas. Com duas das asas cobriam as faces; com outras duas, os pés; com as duas últimas voavam. 3E clamavam uns para os outros:
“Santo, santo, santo é o Senhor dos exércitos!
Toda a Terra está cheia da sua glória!”
4Isto era expresso de tal maneira que fez tremer o templo até aos alicerces, e todo o santuário se encheu de fumo.
5Então eu disse: “Ai de mim que já estou condenado, porque sou um pecador de fala impura! Pertenço a uma raça pecadora que fala duma forma impura e vi o Rei, o Senhor dos exércitos!”
6Então um dos serafins voou sobre o altar e com uma tenaz tirou uma brasa. 7Tocou-me os lábios com ela e disse: “A partir de agora és considerado não culpado, porque esta brasa tocou a tua boca. Os teus pecados estão perdoados.”
8Depois ouvi o Senhor perguntar: “Quem enviarei como mensageiro ao seu povo? Quem irá por nós?”
E eu disse: “Vou eu! Envia-me a mim!”
9“Vai, então, e diz o seguinte a este povo:
Com efeito, ainda que ouçam com os vossos ouvidos,
não compreenderão;
e ainda que vejam com os vossos olhos,
não perceberão.
10Torna o coração deste povo insensível
e fecha-lhes os ouvidos e os olhos.
Que os seus olhos não vejam,
os seus ouvidos não ouçam
e os seus corações não compreendam,
para que não se arrependam e sejam curados.”
11Depois disso, perguntei: “Senhor, até quando?”
E ele respondeu: “Até que as suas cidades sejam destruídas de tal maneira que fiquem sem habitantes; até que todo o país se torne num deserto imenso. 12Até que o Senhor leve o seu povo para países distantes e toda a terra fique inteiramente desabitada! 13No entanto, uma décima parte ficará de resto e sobreviverá; ainda que Judá seja invadida repetidas vezes e seja queimada, no entanto, será semelhante a um terebinto ou um carvalho abatido, cujo cepo ainda pode reviver e dar novamente frutos.”
