Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah
1See now, the Lord,
the Lord Almighty,
is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah
both supply and support:
all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
2the hero and the warrior,
the judge and the prophet,
the diviner and the elder,
3the captain of fifty and the man of rank,
the counsellor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
4‘I will make mere youths their officials;
children will rule over them.’
5People will oppress each other –
man against man, neighbour against neighbour.
The young will rise up against the old,
the nobody against the honoured.
6A man will seize one of his brothers
in his father’s house, and say,
‘You have a cloak, you be our leader;
take charge of this heap of ruins!’
7But in that day he will cry out,
‘I have no remedy.
I have no food or clothing in my house;
do not make me the leader of the people.’
8Jerusalem staggers,
Judah is falling;
their words and deeds are against the Lord,
defying his glorious presence.
9The look on their faces testifies against them;
they parade their sin like Sodom;
they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
They have brought disaster upon themselves.
10Tell the righteous it will be well with them,
for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
11Woe to the wicked!
Disaster is upon them!
They will be paid back
for what their hands have done.
12Youths oppress my people,
women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you astray;
they turn you from the path.
13The Lord takes his place in court;
he rises to judge the people.
14The Lord enters into judgment
against the elders and leaders of his people:
‘It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15What do you mean by crushing my people
and grinding the faces of the poor?’
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
16The Lord says,
‘The women of Zion are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,
flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
the Lord will make their scalps bald.’
18In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, 19the earrings and bracelets and veils, 20the head-dresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, 21the signet rings and nose rings, 22the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses 23and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
24Instead of fragrance there will be a stench;
instead of a sash, a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;
instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;
instead of beauty, branding.
25Your men will fall by the sword,
your warriors in battle.
26The gates of Zion will lament and mourn;
destitute, she will sit on the ground.
Juicio sobre Jerusalén y Judá
1¡Presten atención!
El Señor, el Señor de los Ejércitos,
retira de Jerusalén y de Judá
todo apoyo y sustento:
toda provisión de pan, toda provisión de agua.
2Él retira al valiente y al guerrero,
al juez y al profeta,
al adivino y al anciano,
3al capitán de cincuenta y al dignatario,
al consejero, al artesano experto y al hábil encantador.
4Les pondré como oficiales a muchachos
y los gobernarán niños caprichosos.
5El pueblo se oprimirá a sí mismo:
hombre contra hombre, vecino contra vecino,
joven contra anciano,
plebeyo contra noble.
6Entonces un hombre tomará a su hermano
en la casa de su padre y dirá:
«Sé nuestro líder, pues tienes un manto;
¡hazte cargo de este montón de ruinas!».
7Pero entonces el otro protestará:
«Yo no soy médico
y en mi casa no hay pan ni manto;
¡no me hagas líder del pueblo!».
8Jerusalén se tambalea,
Judá se derrumba,
porque su hablar y su actuar son contrarios al Señor:
¡desafían su gloriosa presencia!
9Su propio descaro los acusa
y, como Sodoma, se jactan de su pecado;
¡ni siquiera lo disimulan!
¡Ay de ellos,
porque causan su propia desgracia!
10Díganle al justo que le irá bien,
pues gozará del fruto de sus acciones.
11¡Ay del malvado,
pues le irá mal!
¡Según la obra de sus manos
se le pagará!
12¡Pobre pueblo mío, oprimido por niños
y gobernado por mujeres!
¡Pobre pueblo mío, extraviado por tus guías,
que tuercen el curso de tu senda!
13El Señor toma su lugar en la corte;
se levanta para enjuiciar al pueblo.
14El Señor entra en juicio
contra los jefes y líderes de su pueblo:
«¡Ustedes han arruinado la viña
y el despojo del pobre está en sus casas!
15¿Con qué derecho aplastan a mi pueblo
y trituran el rostro de los pobres?»,
afirma el Señor, el Señor de los Ejércitos.
16El Señor dice:
«Las hijas de Sión son tan orgullosas
que caminan con el cuello estirado,
con ojos seductores y pasitos cortos,
haciendo sonar los adornos de sus pies.
17Por eso el Señor cubrirá de sarna la cabeza de las hijas de Sión;
el Señor las dejará completamente calvas».
18En aquel día, el Señor arrancará todo adorno: hebillas, diademas, collares, 19pendientes, pulseras, velos, 20adornos de la cabeza, cadenillas de los pies, cinturones, frasquitos de perfume, amuletos, 21anillos, argollas para la nariz, 22ropas de gala, mantos, capas, bolsos, 23espejos, telas finas, turbantes y mantillas.
24Habrá pestilencia en vez de perfume,
soga en vez de cinturón,
calvicie en vez de peinado elegante,
ropa de luto en vez de trajes lujosos,
vergüenza3:24 vergüenza (Qumrán); TM no incluye esta palabra. en vez de belleza.
25Tus hombres caerán a filo de espada,
y tus valientes, en el campo de batalla.
26Las puertas de la ciudad gemirán y se vestirán de luto;
desolada, la ciudad se sentará en el suelo.
