A prophecy against Egypt and Cush
1In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it – 2at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz. He said to him, ‘Take off the sackcloth from your body and the sandals from your feet.’ And he did so, going around stripped and barefoot.
3Then the Lord said, ‘Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years, as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush,20:3 That is, the upper Nile region; also in verse 5 4so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared – to Egypt’s shame. 5Those who trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be dismayed and put to shame. 6In that day the people who live on this coast will say, “See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?” ’
Jesaja, symbool van vreselijke rampen
1In het jaar waarin koning Sargon van Assur zijn veldmaarschalk naar de Filistijnse stad Asdod stuurde en deze de stad innam, 2gaf de Here Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, de opdracht: ‘Trek uw profetenmantel en uw sandalen uit en blijf zo rondlopen.’ Jesaja deed wat de Here hem opdroeg en liep op blote voeten ongekleed rond.
3Toen zei de Here: ‘Mijn dienaar Jesaja, die nu drie jaar lang naakt en op blote voeten heeft rondgelopen, is het symbool van de vreselijke rampen, die Ik over Egypte en Ethiopië zal brengen. 4Want de koning van Assur zal de Egyptenaren en Ethiopiërs gevankelijk wegvoeren, naakt en op blote voeten. Jong en oud zullen met blote billen lopen, tot schande van Egypte. 5Hoe ontmoedigd zullen de Filistijnen dan zijn, want zij rekenden op de “kracht van Ethiopië” en op hun “machtige bondgenoot” Egypte! 6En zij zullen zeggen: “Als Egypte zoiets kan overkomen, welke kans hebben wij dan nog”?’
