A rebellious nation
2Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!
For the Lord has spoken:
‘I reared children and brought them up,
but they have rebelled against me.
3The ox knows its master,
the donkey its owner’s manger,
but Israel does not know,
my people do not understand.’
4Woe to the sinful nation,
a people whose guilt is great,
a brood of evildoers,
children given to corruption!
They have forsaken the Lord;
they have spurned the Holy One of Israel
and turned their backs on him.
5Why should you be beaten anymore?
Why do you persist in rebellion?
Your whole head is injured,
your whole heart afflicted.
6From the sole of your foot to the top of your head
there is no soundness –
only wounds and bruises
and open sores,
not cleansed or bandaged
or soothed with oil.
7Your country is desolate,
your cities burned with fire;
your fields are being stripped by foreigners
right before you,
laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
8Daughter Zion is left
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut in a cucumber field,
like a city under siege.
9Unless the Lord Almighty
had left us some survivors,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.
10Hear the word of the Lord,
you rulers of Sodom;
listen to the instruction of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!
11‘The multitude of your sacrifices –
what are they to me?’
says the Lord.
‘I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
of rams and the fat of fattened animals;
I have no pleasure
in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
12When you come to appear before me,
who has asked this of you,
this trampling of my courts?
13Stop bringing meaningless offerings!
Your incense is detestable to me.
New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations –
I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
14Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals
I hate with all my being.
They have become a burden to me;
I am weary of bearing them.
15When you spread out your hands in prayer,
I hide my eyes from you;
even when you offer many prayers,
I am not listening.
Your hands are full of blood!
16Wash and make yourselves clean.
Take your evil deeds out of my sight;
stop doing wrong.
17Learn to do right; seek justice.
Defend the oppressed.1:17 Or justice. / Correct the oppressor
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow.
18‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’
says the Lord.
‘Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
19If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the good things of the land;
20but if you resist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.’
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
21See how the faithful city
has become a prostitute!
She once was full of justice;
righteousness used to dwell in her –
but now murderers!
22Your silver has become dross,
your choice wine is diluted with water.
23Your rulers are rebels,
partners with thieves;
they all love bribes
and chase after gifts.
They do not defend the cause of the fatherless;
the widow’s case does not come before them.
24Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
the Mighty One of Israel, declares:
‘Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes
and avenge myself on my enemies.
25I will turn my hand against you;1:25 That is, against Jerusalem
I will thoroughly purge away your dross
and remove all your impurities.
26I will restore your leaders as in days of old,
your rulers as at the beginning.
Afterwards you will be called
the City of Righteousness,
the Faithful City.’
27Zion will be delivered with justice,
her penitent ones with righteousness.
28But rebels and sinners will both be broken,
and those who forsake the Lord will perish.
29‘You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks
in which you have delighted;
you will be disgraced because of the gardens
that you have chosen.
30You will be like an oak with fading leaves,
like a garden without water.
31The mighty man will become tinder
and his work a spark;
both will burn together,
with no-one to quench the fire.’

Un neam răzvrătit
2Ascultați, ceruri! Ia aminte, pământ,
pentru că Domnul a vorbit:
„Am îngrijit copii și i‑am crescut,
dar ei s‑au răzvrătit împotriva Mea.
3Boul își cunoaște stăpânul,
iar măgarul știe ieslea stăpânului său,
însă Israel nu Mă cunoaște,
poporul Meu nu înțelege!“
4Vai, neam păcătos,
popor încărcat cu nelegiuire,
sămânță de răufăcători,
copii pervertiți!
Ei L‑au părăsit pe Domnul,
L‑au disprețuit pe Sfântul lui Israel
și I‑au întors spatele!
5Ce folos să mai fiți loviți,
de vreme ce stăruiți în apostazie!?
Tot capul este bolnav
și toată inima suferă!
6Din tălpi și până‑n creștet,
nimic nu este sănătos,
doar răni și vânătăi,
tăieturi sângerânde6 Lit.: proaspete.,
care nu s‑au uscat și care n‑au fost legate
sau alinate cu ulei.
7Țara voastră este pustie,
cetățile voastre sunt arse de foc,
câmpurile voastre sunt devorate de străini
chiar în fața voastră;
țara vă este distrusă
deoarece a fost răscolită de străini.
8Fiica Sionului8 Ierusalimul; [peste tot în carte]. este părăsită
ca o colibă în vie,
ca un adăpost într‑un ogor de castraveți,
ca o cetate asediată.
9Dacă Domnul Oștirilor9 Ebr.: YHWH Țebaot. Termenul ebraic pentru oștiri se poate referi: (1) la oștirile lui Israel (Ex. 7:4; Ps. 44:9); (2) la corpurile cerești (Gen. 2:1; Deut. 4:19; Is. 40:26); (3) la îngeri (Ios. 5:14; 1 Regi 22:19; Ps. 148:2). Acest titlu face referire, probabil, la suveranitatea lui Dumnezeu peste orice putere din univers [peste tot în carte].
nu ne‑ar fi lăsat câțiva supraviețuitori,
am fi ajuns ca Sodoma
și ne‑am fi asemănat cu Gomora.
10Ascultați Cuvântul Domnului,
voi, conducători ai Sodomei!
Luați aminte la Legea Dumnezeului nostru,
voi, popor al Gomorei!
11„Ce este pentru Mine mulțimea jertfelor voastre?
zice Domnul.
Sunt sătul de arderile‑de‑tot ale berbecilor
și de grăsimea vițeilor îngrășați!
Nu‑Mi place deloc
sângele taurilor, al mieilor sau al țapilor.
12Cine v‑a cerut să vă înfățișați înaintea Mea,
pângărindu‑Mi curțile?
13Nu mai aduceți daruri de mâncare fără rost!
Tămâia voastră este o urâciune înaintea Mea!
Nu pot suferi adunarea de sărbătoare unită cu nelegiuirea:
lunile noi, Sabatele și adunările voastre.
14Sufletul Meu urăște lunile voastre noi
și sărbătorile voastre.
Ele au devenit o povară pentru Mine;
am obosit să le mai port.
15Când vă veți întinde mâinile,
Îmi voi ascunde ochii de voi.
Chiar dacă veți face multe rugăciuni,
nu le voi asculta.
Mâinile vă sunt pline de sânge;
16spălați‑vă și curățiți‑vă!
Îndepărtați faptele voastre rele
dinaintea ochilor Mei!
Nu mai faceți rău,
17ci învățați să faceți bine!
Căutați dreptatea,
scăpați pe cel asuprit!17 Sau: mustrați‑l pe asupritor.
Faceți dreptate orfanului
și vorbiți în apărarea văduvei!
18Veniți acum să ne judecăm!
zice Domnul.
Deși păcatele voastre sunt precum culoarea stacojie,
ele se vor face albe ca zăpada;
deși sunt roșii ca purpura,
ele se vor face ca lâna.
19Dacă veți vrea și veți asculta,
veți mânca ce are țara mai bun,
20dar dacă vă veți împotrivi și vă veți răzvrăti,
veți fi devorați de sabie“, căci gura Domnului a vorbit.
O cetate necredincioasă
21Vezi cum orașul credincios
a devenit o prostituată!
Era plin de judecată;
dreptatea locuia în el;
dar acum este plin de ucigași!
22Argintul vostru s‑a făcut zgură,
și băutura voastră este amestecată cu apă.
23Conducătorii voștri sunt răzvrătiți
și sunt prieteni cu tâlharii.
Toți iubesc mita
și aleargă după daruri!
Nu‑l apără pe cel orfan,
iar cauza văduvei n‑ajunge înaintea lor.
24De aceea Stăpânul, Domnul Oștirilor,
Puternicul lui Israel, zice:
„Vai, Îmi voi vărsa mânia asupra vrăjmașilor mei,
Mă voi răzbuna pe dușmanii Mei!
25Îmi voi întoarce mâna împotriva ta,
voi curăța zgura ta așa cum o curăță leșia
și voi îndepărta toate impuritățile tale.
26Îi voi face pe judecătorii tăi cum erau odinioară,
iar pe sfetnicii tăi ca la început.
După aceea, ți se va zice:
«Cetate a dreptății,
orașul credincios!»“
27Sionul va fi răscumpărat prin judecată,
și cei ai lui care se pocăiesc, prin dreptate.
28Dar răzvrătiții și păcătoșii vor fi nimiciți împreună
și cei ce‑L părăsesc pe Domnul vor fi mistuiți.
29„Într-adevăr, vă va fi rușine de stejarii sacri
în care vă găseați desfătarea;
veți roși din cauza grădinilor
pe care le‑ați ales!
30Căci veți fi ca un terebint
ale cărui frunze se veștejesc,
ca o grădină fără apă!
31Cel puternic va fi ca un câlț,
iar lucrarea sa ca o scânteie;
el și lucrarea lui vor arde împreună
și nimeni nu‑i va stinge!“
