Worship in the earthly tabernacle
1Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.
6When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. 9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshipper. 10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings – external regulations applying until the time of the new order.
The blood of Christ
11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,9:11 Some early manuscripts are to come he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, so obtaining9:12 Or blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,9:14 Or from useless rituals so that we may serve the living God!
15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance – now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
16In the case of a will,9:16 Same Greek word as covenant; also in verse 17 it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20He said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.’9:20 Exodus 24:8 21In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
1첫번째 계약에도 예배 규칙과 땅에 속한 성소가 있었습니다.
2먼저 성막이 세워지고 그 성막은 간막이에 의해서 두 부분으로 나누어져 있었는데 그 바깥쪽을 성소라고 불렀습니다. 거기에는 등대와 빵을 차려 놓은 상이 있었습니다.
3그리고 간막이 휘장 안쪽을 지성소라고 불렀습니다.
4거기에는 금향단과 전체를 금으로 입힌 9:4 또는 ‘언약궤’법궤가 있고 그 안에는 만나를 담은 금항아리와 아론의 싹난 지팡이와 계약의 두 돌판이 들어 있었습니다.
5또 그 궤의 뚜껑을 9:5 또는 ‘자비의 자리’속죄소라고 불렀는데 그룹이라는 영광의 천사들이 날개로 그 위를 내리덮고 있었습니다. 이런 것에 대해서는 일일이 다 말할 수가 없습니다.
6이 모든 것이 성막 안에 마련되어 있어서 제사장들은 언제나 바깥 성소에 들어가 직무를 수행하고
7안쪽에 있는 지성소에는 대제사장만이 일 년에 한 차례씩 피를 가지고 들어갔습니다. 이 피는 대제사장 자신과 백성들이 모르고 지은 죄를 위해 드리는 것입니다.
8이것으로 성령님은 바깥쪽의 성소가 세워져 있는 동안에는 지성소로 들어가는 길이 아직 열리지 않았다는 것을 보여 주신 것입니다.
9이 성막은 현 시대를 위한 비유입니다. 이 제도에 따라 예물과 제사를 드리지만 이것이 예배드리는 사람의 양심을 깨끗하게 할 수는 없습니다.
10그것들은 다만 먹고 마시는 것과 몸을 씻는 여러 가지 외적인 의식에 불과한 것으로서 새로운 제도를 세울 때까지만 적용되는 규정들입니다.
새 계약
11그러나 그리스도께서는 9:11 어떤 사본에는 ‘장래 좋은 일’이미 이루어진 좋은 일의 대제사장으로 오셔서 사람의 손으로 만들지 않은 성막, 곧 이 세상의 창조물에 속하지 않은 더 크고 완전한 성막에 들어가셨습니다.
12그리고 염소나 송아지의 피가 아닌 자기 피를 가지고 단 한 번 지성소에 들어가셔서 우리의 영원한 구원을 획득하셨습니다.
13염소와 황소의 피와 암송아지의 재도 더러워진 사람들에게 뿌리면 그 육체를 깨끗하고 거룩하게 했는데
14하물며 영원하신 성령님을 통해 흠 없는 자기 자신을 하나님께 드린 그리스도의 피가 죽음에 이르게 하는 행위에서 어찌 여러분의 양심을 깨끗하게 하여 살아 계신 하나님을 섬기게 하지 못하겠습니까?
15그러므로 그리스도는 새 계약의 중재자가 되셨습니다. 이것은 첫 계약 아래서 범한 죄를 속죄하시려고 죽으셔서 하나님의 부르심을 받은 사람들이 약속된 영원한 축복을 받도록 하기 위한 것입니다.
16유언이 효력을 나타내려면 유언한 사람이 반드시 죽어야 합니다.
17그것은 유언한 사람이 살아 있으면 아무 효력도 없고 죽어야만 효력이 나타나기 때문입니다.
18따라서 첫 계약도 피로써 효력을 갖게 되었습니다.
19모세는 율법에 따라 모든 계명을 온 백성에게 말한 후에 송아지와 염소의 피를 물과 함께 가지고 와서 붉은 양털과 9:19 또는 ‘히’우슬초에 적셔 율법책과 모든 백성에게 뿌리면서
209:20 출24:8“이것은 하나님이 여러분과 맺은 계약의 피입니다” 라고 하였습니다.
21그리고 그는 성막과 제사에 쓰이는 모든 물건에도 그와 같이 피를 뿌렸습니다.
22율법에 의하면 거의 모든 것이 다 피로써 깨끗하게 되며 피 흘림이 없으면 죄의 용서도 없습니다.
23하늘에 있는 것들을 모방한 지상의 모형들은 이런 방법으로 깨끗하게 해야 했습니다. 그러나 하늘에 있는 것들은 이보다 더 나은 제물로 깨끗하게 해야 합니다.
24그리스도께서는 참 성소의 모형에 불과한 사람의 손으로 만든 지상의 성소에 들어가신 것이 아니라 우리를 위해 하나님 앞에 나타나시려고 하늘에 있는 성소에 들어가셨습니다.
25대제사장은 자기의 피가 아닌 짐승의 피를 가지고 해마다 지성소에 들어갔으나 그리스도께서는 자주 자기를 드리실 필요가 없었습니다.
26만일 그렇게 해야 한다면 그리스도께서 세상이 창조될 때부터 자주 고난을 받으셨어야 했을 것입니다. 그러나 이제 그리스도는 자기를 제물로 드려 죄를 없애려고 역사의 끝에 단번에 나타나셨습니다.
27사람이 한 번 죽는 것은 정해진 운명이지만 죽은 후에는 심판이 있습니다.
28이와 같이 그리스도께서도 많은 사람의 죄를 없애려고 단번에 희생의 제물이 되셨습니다. 그리고 다시 오실 때에는 죄를 위해서가 아니라 자기를 기다리는 사람들에게 구원을 주시기 위해서 두 번째 나타나실 것입니다.
