God’s final word: his Son
1In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
The Son superior to angels
5For to which of the angels did God ever say,
‘You are my Son;
today I have become your Father’1:5 Psalm 2:7?
Or again,
‘I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son’1:5 2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chron. 17:13?
6And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’1:6 Deut. 32:43 (see Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint)
7In speaking of the angels he says,
‘He makes his angels spirits,
and his servants flames of fire.’1:7 Psalm 104:4
8But about the Son he says,
‘Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a sceptre of justice will be the sceptre of your kingdom.
9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.’1:9 Psalm 45:6,7
10He also says,
‘In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.’1:12 Psalm 102:25-27
13To which of the angels did God ever say,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet’1:13 Psalm 110:1?
14Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
Jesus Cristo é o Filho de Deus
1Anteriormente Deus falou aos nossos antepassados de muitas maneiras por intermédio dos profetas. 2Agora, nos tempos em que vivemos, falou-nos através do seu Filho, a quem deu todas as coisas e por meio de quem criou tudo o que existe. 3Este reflete a glória de seu Pai e é a imagem perfeita da sua pessoa. Ele mantém todo o universo pela autoridade da sua palavra. Tendo morrido para nos purificar da culpa dos nossos pecados, sentou-se à direita do Deus glorioso, nos lugares celestiais.
Cristo é superior aos anjos
4É assim muito superior aos anjos, como prova o nome excelso que Deus lhe deu. 5Deus nunca disse a nenhum anjo:
“Tu és meu Filho;
hoje tornei-me teu Pai.”1.5 Sl 2.7.
Também não se referia a nenhum anjo quando disse:
“Eu serei para ele Pai
e ele será meu Filho.”1.5 2 Sm 7.14; 1 Cr 17.13.
6E doutra vez, quando Deus trouxe o seu Filho primogénito à Terra, disse:
“Que todos os anjos de Deus o adorem.”
7É verdade que Deus alude aos anjos dizendo:
“É ele que faz dos seus anjos espíritos
e os seus ministros eficazes como fogo.”1.7 Sl 104.4.
8Mas referindo-se ao Filho diz:
“O teu trono, ó Deus, dura para sempre.
A justiça é aquilo que faz a força do teu reino.
9Tu amas a justiça e aborreces o mal.
Por isso Deus, o teu Deus, derramou sobre ti
mais óleo de alegria do que sobre os teus companheiros.”1.9 Sl 45.6-7.
10E ainda:
“Senhor, foste tu quem fundou a Terra.
Fizeste o universo com as tuas mãos.
11Contudo, isso um dia desaparecerá,
mas tu ficas para sempre.
E todos acabarão, como roupa velha.
12Tu os enrolarás como vestuário;
e eles serão trocados, como se faz com uma peça de roupa.
Tu, porém, és sempre o mesmo;
os teus anos não têm fim.”1.12 Sl 102.25-27.
13Deus nunca disse a um anjo:
“Senta-te à minha direita,
até que ponha os teus inimigos debaixo dos teus pés.”1.13 Sl 110.1.
14É que os anjos são apenas espíritos enviados para servir a favor daqueles que vão receber a salvação.
