The three visitors
1The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
3He said, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord,18:3 Or eyes, Lord do not pass your servant by. 4Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. 5Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way – now that you have come to your servant.’
‘Very well,’ they answered, ‘do as you say.’
6So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. ‘Quick,’ he said, ‘get three seahs18:6 That is, probably about 16 kilograms of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.’
7Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him.
‘There, in the tent,’ he said.
10Then one of them said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’
13Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Will I really have a child, now that I am old?” 14Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.’
15Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, ‘I did not laugh.’
But he said, ‘Yes, you did laugh.’
Abraham pleads for Sodom
16When the men got up to leave, they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17Then the Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.18:18 Or will use his name in blessings (see 48:20) 19For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’
20Then the Lord said, ‘The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.’
22The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.18:22 Masoretic Text; an ancient Hebrew scribal tradition but the Lord remained standing before Abraham 23Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare18:24 Or forgive; also in verse 26 the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’
26The Lord said, ‘If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’
27Then Abraham spoke up again: ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?’
‘If I find forty-five there,’ he said, ‘I will not destroy it.’
29Once again he spoke to him, ‘What if only forty are found there?’
He said, ‘For the sake of forty, I will not do it.’
30Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?’
He answered, ‘I will not do it if I find thirty there.’
31Abraham said, ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?’
He said, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’
32Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?’
He answered, ‘For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.’
33When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
Ang Tatlong Panauhin ni Abraham
1Nagpakita ang Panginoon kay Abraham nang nakatira pa siya malapit sa malalaking puno18:1 malalaking puno: Tingnan ang “footnote” sa 12:6. ni Mamre. Mainit ang araw noon, at si Abraham ay nakaupo sa pintuan ng kanyang tolda. 2Habang nagmamasid siya, may nakita siyang tatlong lalaki na nakatayo sa di-kalayuan. Tumayo siya agad at dali-daling sumalubong sa kanila. Yumukod siya sa kanila bilang paggalang.
3At sinabi, “Panginoon,18:3 Panginoon: o, Ginoo. Malalaman natin sa susunod na mga talata na ang nagpakita kay Abraham ay ang Panginoon kasama ang dalawang anghel. kung maaari, dumaan po muna kayo rito sa amin. 4Magpapakuha po ako ng tubig para makapaghugas kayo ng mga paa ninyo at makapagpahinga sa lilim ng punongkahoy na ito. 5Kukuha rin ako ng pagkain para sa inyo upang may lakas po kayo sa inyong paglalakad. Ikinagagalak ko pong mapaglingkuran kayo habang nandito kayo sa amin.” At sumagot sila, “Sige, gawin mo kung ano ang sinabi mo.”
6Kaya nagmadaling pumasok si Abraham sa tolda at sinabi kay Sara, “Kumuha ka ng kalahating sako ng magandang klaseng harina at magluto ka ng tinapay. At bilisan mo ang pagluluto.” 7Tumakbo agad si Abraham papunta sa mga bakahan niya at pumili ng matabang guya, at ipinakatay niya ito at ipinaluto sa alipin niyang kabataan. 8Pagkatapos, dinala niya ito sa mga panauhin niya, at nagdala rin siya ng keso at gatas. At habang kumakain sila sa ilalim ng punongkahoy, naroon din si Abraham na naglilingkod sa kanila.
9Ngayon, nagtanong ang mga panauhin kay Abraham, “Nasaan ang asawa mong si Sara?” Sumagot siya, “Naroon po sa loob ng tolda.” 10Ang isa sa mga panauhin ay nagsabi, “Tiyak na babalik ako rito sa ganito ring panahon sa susunod na taon at magkakaroon ng anak na lalaki ang asawa mong si Sara.”
Nakikinig pala si Sara sa pintuan ng tolda na nasa likod lamang ni Abraham. 11(Matanda na silang dalawa ni Abraham at huminto na nga ang buwanang dalaw ni Sara.) 12Tumawa si Sara sa kanyang sarili at nag-isip-isip, “Sa katandaan kong ito, masisiyahan pa ba akong sumiping sa asawa ko, na matanda na rin, para magkaanak kami?”
13Nagtanong agad ang Panginoon kay Abraham, “Bakit tumatawa si Sara at sinasabi, ‘Magkakaanak pa ba ako ngayong matanda na ako?’ 14May bagay ba na hindi magagawa ng Panginoon? Tulad ng sinabi ko, babalik ako rito sa ganito ring panahon sa susunod na taon at magkakaroon ng anak na lalaki si Sara.”
15Natakot si Sara, kaya nagsinungaling siya. Sinabi niya, “Hindi po ako tumawa!” Pero sinabi ng Panginoon, “Tumawa ka talaga.”
Nagmakaawa si Abraham para sa Lungsod ng Sodom
16Pagkatapos, umalis ang tatlong lalaki. Inihatid sila ni Abraham hanggang sa lugar kung saan nakikita nila sa ibaba ang lungsod ng Sodom. 17Sinabi ng Panginoon, “Hindi ko itatago kay Abraham ang gagawin ko. 18Talagang magiging malaki at makapangyarihang bansa ang mga lahi niya sa hinaharap. At sa pamamagitan niya, makakatanggap ng pagpapala ang ibang mga bansa. 19Pinili ko siya para ipatupad niya sa mga anak at mga lahi niya ang utos ko na gumawa sila ng tama at matuwid. Sa ganoong paraan, matutupad ang aking pangako sa kanya.”
20Pagkatapos, sinabi ng Panginoon kay Abraham, “Maraming tao ang dumadaing doon sa Sodom at Gomora, dahil sobrang sama na ng lugar na iyon. 21Kaya pupunta ako roon para malaman ko kung totoo o hindi ang mga daing ng mga tao roon.”
22Lumakad agad ang dalawang lalaki papuntang Sodom, pero nagpaiwan ang Panginoon at si Abraham. 23Lumapit si Abraham sa Panginoon at nagtanong, “Lilipulin nʼyo po ba ang mga matuwid kasama ng mga makasalanan. 24Kung mayroon po kayang 50 matuwid sa lungsod na iyan, lilipulin nʼyo pa rin po ba ang buong lungsod? Hindi nʼyo po ba kahahabagan ang lungsod dahil sa 50 taong matuwid? 25Hindi po kapani-paniwala na lilipulin ninyo ang mga matuwid kasama ng mga makasalanan. Hindi po maaaring pare-pareho ang pakikitungo nʼyo sa kanila. Kayo po na humahatol sa buong mundo, hindi po baʼt dapat gawin ninyo kung ano ang tama?” 26Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Kung may makita akong 50 matuwid sa Sodom, hindi ko lilipulin ang buong lungsod alang-alang sa kanila.”
27Muling nagsalita si Abraham, “O Panginoon, patawarin nʼyo po akong naglakas-loob na makipag-usap sa inyo. Tao lang po ako, at wala akong katuwiran na magsabi nito sa inyo. 28Pero kung mayroon po kayang 45 matuwid, lilipulin nʼyo pa rin ba ang buong lungsod dahil kulang po ito ng lima?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Kung may makita akong 45 matuwid, hindi ko lilipulin ang lungsod.”
29Muling nagsalita si Abraham, “Kung 40 lang po kaya ang matuwid?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Hindi ko lilipulin ang lungsod alang-alang lamang sa 40 matuwid.”
30Muling nagsalita si Abraham, “Huwag po sana kayong magalit sa akin, Panginoon, dahil magtatanong pa po ako. Ano po kaya kung may 30 lang na taong matuwid?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Hindi ko pa rin lilipulin ang lungsod kung may makita akong 30 tao na matuwid.”
31Muling nagsalita si Abraham, “Panginoon, patawarin nʼyo po ako sa paglalakas-loob ko na pakikipag-usap sa inyo. Ano po kaya kung may 20 na lang na taong matuwid?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Hindi ko pa rin lilipulin ang lungsod alang-alang sa 20 matuwid.”
32Muling nagsalita si Abraham, “Panginoon, huwag po sana kayong magagalit; huling tanong na po ito. Halimbawa, sampu na lang po ang nakita ninyong matuwid?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Hindi ko pa rin lilipulin ang lungsod alang-alang sa sampung matuwid.”
33Pagkatapos nilang mag-usap, umalis ang Panginoon at si Abraham ay umuwi sa kanila.
