A prophecy against Edom
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2‘Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir; prophesy against it 3and say: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste. 4I will turn your towns into ruins and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
5‘ “Because you harboured an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax, 6therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go. 8I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines. 9I will make you desolate for ever; your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
10‘ “Because you have said, ‘These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them,’ even though I the Lord was there, 11therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. 12Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, ‘They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.’ 13You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it. 14This is what the Sovereign Lord says: while the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.” ’
Profecia contra Edom
1Recebi uma nova mensagem da parte do Senhor que dizia: 2“Homem mortal, volta-te para o monte de Seir e profetiza desta maneira contra o povo. 3Diz o Senhor Deus: Estou contra vocês e esmagar-vos-ei com o meu punho, destruir-vos-ei totalmente. 4Porque odeiam o meu povo de Israel, destruirei as vossas povoações e farei delas lugares totalmente assolados, de tal forma que se darão bem conta de que eu sou o Senhor.
5Vocês exterminaram o meu povo, foram o seu inimigo perpétuo, numa altura em que a calamidade lhes caiu em cima, visto que tinha chegado o tempo de os castigar, por causa dos seus pecados. 6Tão certo como eu viver, diz o Senhor Deus, que vos farei submergir num mar de sangue! Considerando que não rejeitaram o espírito da morte, ele vos alcançará! 7Liquidarei totalmente o povo do monte de Seir e serão abatidos tanto os que fogem dali como os que procurem correr para lá. 8Os vossos vales ficarão cheios de mortos, não só os vales, mas os montes e os ribeiros; tudo ficará repleto com os que morrem pela guerra. 9E será de tal forma que nunca mais tornarão a viver. Serão abandonados para sempre. As vossas cidades não mais serão reconstruídas. E nessa altura, saberão que eu sou o Senhor!
10Dizem vocês: ‘Tanto Israel como Judá são já nossos. Tomaremos posse deles. Que nos interessa a nós que Deus lá esteja?’ 11Então, tão certo como eu viver, diz o Senhor Deus, que lhes darei a recompensa dos seus atos malvados contra o meu povo. Castigar-vos-ei por tudo o que de ignominioso e odioso fizeram. 12Farei com que o meu nome seja honrado em Israel, por causa daquilo que vos farei. E dar-se-ão conta de que eu ouvi cada palavra que falaram contra o Senhor, dizendo: ‘O seu povo está desguarnecido! Eles são alimento para nós comermos!’ 13Diziam essas coisas e ao mesmo tempo vangloriavam-se contra mim. E eu ouvi tudo! 14Todo o mundo ficará contente, quando virem o que vos fiz, diz o Senhor Deus. 15Regozijaram-se com o triste destino de Israel. Agora serei eu quem ficará satisfeito com o vosso! Vocês serão açoitados, ó povo do monte Seir, e todos os que vivem em Edom. Depois verão que eu sou o Senhor!
