The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
1The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2‘This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb12:3 The Hebrew word can mean lamb or kid; also in verse 4. for his family, one for each household. 4If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbour, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door-frames of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire – with the head, legs and internal organs. 10Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.
12‘On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
14‘This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord – a lasting ordinance. 15For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day until the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.
17‘Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. 20Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.’
21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, ‘Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the door-frame. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the door-frame and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.
24‘Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?” 27then tell them, “It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.” ’ Then the people bowed down and worshipped. 28The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron.
29At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.
The exodus
31During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, ‘Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. 32Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.’
33The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. ‘For otherwise,’ they said, ‘we will all die!’ 34So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 35The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36The Lord had made the Egyptians favourably disposed towards the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.
37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. 38Many other people went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. 39With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.
40Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt12:40 Masoretic Text; Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint Egypt and Canaan was 430 years. 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. 42Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honour the Lord for the generations to come.
Passover restrictions
43The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘These are the regulations for the Passover meal:
‘No foreigner may eat it. 44Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, 45but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.
46‘It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. 47The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.
48‘A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. 49The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.’
50All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.
De instelling van Pesach
1Voordat Mozes en Aäron voor de laatste keer naar de farao gingen, had de Here tegen hen gezegd: 2‘Voortaan zal deze maand de eerste maand van het Israëlitische jaar zijn. 3Vertel alle Israëlieten dat op de tiende dag van deze maand elk gezin een lam of een bokje moet nemen, elk gezin één. 4Als het een klein gezin is, kan het met een ander klein gezin samen een lam nemen. Dat hangt af van het aantal gezinsleden, want het lam moet wel helemaal worden opgegeten. 5Het mag geen enkel gebrek hebben en het moet mannelijk en een jaar oud zijn. Het mag ook een bokje zijn. 6Tegen de avond van de veertiende dag van de maand moeten alle Israëlieten de dieren slachten. 7Het bloed moeten ze strijken aan de posten van de voordeur van het huis waar zij eten. 8Die nacht moet iedereen geroosterd vlees eten, met ongezuurd brood en bittere kruiden. 9Het vlees mag niet rauw of gekookt worden gegeten. Rooster het boven het vuur met de kop, de poten en de ingewanden erbij. 10Al het vlees moet diezelfde nacht worden opgegeten. Als er toch iets overblijft, moet dat de volgende morgen worden verbrand. 11Het moet een haastige maaltijd zijn, iedereen moet klaar staan om op reis te gaan. De sandalen aan en de wandelstaf in de hand. Het is een Pesach (Voorbijgang) voor de Here. 12Want Ik zal deze nacht door Egypte gaan en alle eerstgeborenen van mens en dier doden. Ik zal de afgoden van Egypte vernederen, Ik, de Here. 13Het bloed aan de deurposten zal voor Mij het teken zijn dat daar Israëlieten zijn. Als Ik het bloed zie, sla Ik dát huis over. Uw eerstgeborenen zullen niet het slachtoffer worden van de straf die Ik Egypte ga opleggen.
14Voortaan moet u deze gebeurtenis elk jaar herdenken. Dit voorschrift blijft altijd van kracht, ook voor toekomstige generaties. 15Zeven dagen lang moet u ongezuurd brood eten. Op de eerste dag van het feest moet iedereen het zuurdeeg weggooien, zodat niemand iets gezuurds kan eten. Degene die dat wel doet, moet uit het volk worden verstoten. 16Op de eerste en de zevende dag van het feest moet u voor een eredienst bijeenkomen en op die dagen mag niemand werken. Alleen het klaarmaken van eten is dan toegestaan.
17Dit jaarlijkse “Feest van de Ongezuurde Broden” zal een herinnering zijn aan deze dag, de dag dat Ik u uit het land Egypte heb geleid. Het is mijn eeuwigdurende wet dat u deze dag van generatie op generatie zult vieren. 18Van de avond van de veertiende dag van de maand tot de avond van de eenentwintigste dag van de maand mag alleen ongezuurd brood worden gegeten. 19Gedurende deze zeven dagen mag niemand zuurdeeg in huis hebben, iedereen die in die tijd toch iets gezuurds eet, moet worden verdreven uit de gemeenschap van Israël. Dit geldt zowel voor buitenlanders die bij u wonen als voor de mensen die tot het volk Israël zelf behoren. 20Ik herhaal: gedurende die zeven dagen mag niemand iets gezuurds eten, alleen ongezuurd brood is toegestaan.’
21Mozes riep de leiders van Israël bijeen en zei tegen hen: ‘Haal voor elk gezin één lam of een bokje uit uw kudden en slacht dit. 22Vang het bloed op in een schaal, doop daar een bosje hysop in en strijk daarmee het bloed aan de posten van jullie huisdeuren. Daarna mag niemand het huis verlaten tot de morgen aanbreekt. 23De Here gaat vannacht door Egypte om zijn bewoners te straffen. Als Hij echter het bloed aan de deurposten ziet, zal Hij dat huis voorbij gaan en de doodsengel niet toestaan naar binnen te gaan om de eerstgeborene te doden.
24Vergeet het niet: dit zijn voorschriften die blijvend van kracht zijn voor u en voor uw kinderen. 25Als u bent aangekomen in het land dat de Here ons gaat geven, moet u dit elk jaar herhalen. 26En als uw kinderen dan vragen: “Waarom doet u dat?”, 27dan moet u antwoorden: “Het is een Pesach-offer voor de Here, die in Egypte onze huizen voorbij ging, toen Hij de Egyptenaren strafte.” ’ Toen knielden alle aanwezigen en bogen hun hoofd voor de Here. 28De Israëlieten voerden de opdrachten uit die de Here hun door Mozes en Aäron had gegeven.
29Rond middernacht doodde de Here iedere eerstgeborene in Egypte, van de zoon van de farao tot de zoon van de gevangene in de kerker en ook van het vee. 30De farao, zijn dienaren en het hele volk stonden ʼs nachts op, door het hele land kon men de rouwklachten horen, want er was geen huis waar geen dode te betreuren was.
31Nog diezelfde nacht ontbood de farao Mozes en Aäron en zei: ‘Verlaat ons land! U en uw volk moeten vertrekken. 32Neem uw kleinvee en uw runderen ook mee, maar vertrek in elk geval! En bid tot uw God voor mij en mijn land.’ 33Ook de andere Egyptenaren drongen er bij de Israëlieten op aan dat zij het land snel zouden verlaten. Zij waren bang dat zij allemaal zouden sterven. 34Toen namen de Israëlieten hun ongezuurde deeg, wikkelden de baktroggen in hun kleren en namen deze op de schouder. 35Zij gehoorzaamden het bevel van Mozes en vroegen de Egyptenaren om goud, zilver en kleren. 36De Here zorgde ervoor dat de Egyptenaren hen gunstig gezind waren en hun eisen inwilligden. Zo bleef het Egyptische volk berooid achter!
37Daarna verlieten de Israëlieten Rameses en trokken lopend naar Sukkot. Het was een menigte van zeshonderdduizend mensen, vrouwen en kinderen niet meegerekend! 38Daarbij kwam ook nog een aantal mensen van niet-Joodse afkomst en bovendien al het vee. 39Van het deeg dat zij hadden meegenomen, bakten zij ongezuurde broden. Door hun overhaaste vertrek hadden zij geen eten voor onderweg kunnen klaarmaken.
40De zonen van Jakob en hun nakomelingen hadden vierhonderddertig jaar in Egypte gewoond 41en op de laatste dag van dat vierhonderddertigste jaar verliet het volk van de Here Egypte. 42Deze nacht koos de Here om zijn volk uit het land Egypte te leiden. Voortaan werd deze nacht elk jaar gevierd ter ere van de Here.
43De Here zei tegen Mozes en Aäron: ‘Dit zijn de regels voor de viering van Pesach, het Paasfeest. Geen enkele vreemdeling mag van het lam eten. 44Dat geldt ook voor de slaaf die iemand heeft gekocht, maar die nog onbesneden is. 45Buitenlanders en gehuurde werkkrachten mogen er ook niet van eten. 46Het lam moet worden gegeten in het huis waar het klaargemaakt is, en mag niet naar buiten worden gebracht. Ook mogen de botten niet worden gebroken. 47Het hele volk moet dit feest vieren. 48Als er een buitenlander bij u woont, moeten eerst al zijn mannelijke huisgenoten worden besneden. Als dat is gebeurd, hoort hij erbij en mag hij het feest meevieren. Maar een onbesnedene mag er niet van eten. 49Een en dezelfde wet geldt zowel voor de geboren Israëliet als voor de vreemdeling die bij het volk woont.’
50Het volk Israël gehoorzaamde de bevelen van de Here die Hij aan Mozes en Aäron had gegeven. 51Die dag leidde de Here het volk Israël uit Egypte weg.
Familie na familie passeerde de landsgrenzen.
