Mordecai honoured
1That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. 2It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3‘What honour and recognition has Mordecai received for this?’ the king asked.
‘Nothing has been done for him,’ his attendants answered.
4The king said, ‘Who is in the court?’ Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
5His attendants answered, ‘Haman is standing in the court.’
‘Bring him in,’ the king ordered.
6When Haman entered, the king asked him, ‘What should be done for the man the king delights to honour?’
Now Haman thought to himself, ‘Who is there that the king would rather honour than me?’ 7So he answered the king, ‘For the man the king delights to honour, 8let them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head. 9Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honour, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honour!” ’
10‘Go at once,’ the king commanded Haman. ‘Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.’
11So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king delights to honour!’
12Afterwards Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief, 13and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him.
His advisors and his wife Zeresh said to him, ‘Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him – you will surely come to ruin!’ 14While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
Eerbetoon voor Mordechai
1Die nacht kon de koning niet in slaap komen. Daarom besloot hij zich wat te laten voorlezen. Hij vroeg om de jaarboeken met de geschiedenis van zijn koninkrijk. 2Op een gegeven moment hoorde hij de passage waarin stond dat Mordechai een samenzwering had ontmaskerd van Bigtan en Teres, twee poortwachters van het paleis. Die twee hadden het plan beraamd de koning te vermoorden.
3‘Wat voor beloning hebben wij Mordechai hiervoor gegeven?’ vroeg de koning zijn dienaren. ‘Hij heeft nooit iets gekregen,’ antwoordden zij. 4‘Wie is er op het ogenblik in de buitenste voorhof?’ vroeg de vorst. Nu was Haman juist de buitenste voorhof ingelopen. Hij was van plan de koning te vragen of hij Mordechai mocht ophangen aan de pasgebouwde galg. 5De dienaren antwoordden: ‘Haman staat buiten te wachten.’ ‘Laat hem binnenkomen,’ beval de koning. 6Toen Haman was binnengekomen, vroeg de koning: ‘Wat kan ik doen voor iemand aan wie ik graag eer wil bewijzen?’ Haman dacht bij zichzelf: ‘Aan wie anders zou de koning eer willen bewijzen dan aan mij?’ 7Daarom antwoordde hij: 8‘Laat een koninklijk gewaad halen dat u zelf hebt gedragen. Laat ook een paard halen waarop alleen u rijdt en dat op zijn hoofd de koninklijke rozet draagt. 9Laat een van uw aanzienlijkste hofleden die man helpen dat gewaad aan te trekken. Daarna moet hij hem op uw paard door de stad leiden en voor hem uit roepen: “Dit doet de koning met de man aan wie hij eer wil bewijzen!” ’
10‘Prachtig!’, zei de koning tegen Haman. ‘Haal snel de kleren en het paard. Doe wat u hebt gezegd bij de Jood Mordechai. Hij bevindt zich bij de paleispoort. Doe precies wat u hebt voorgesteld.’ 11Toen haalde Haman de kleren en trok deze bij Mordechai aan. Hij hielp hem op het paard van de koning en leidde hem door de straten van de stad. ‘Zo doet de koning met de man aan wie hij eer wil bewijzen!’, riep hij steeds.
12Na afloop van dit eerbetoon ging Mordechai terug naar de Paleispoort. Maar Haman haastte zich diepvernederd naar huis. 13Hij vertelde zijn vrouw en vrienden wat hem was overkomen. Zij zeiden: ‘Als Mordechai een Jood is, lukken je plannen tegen hem nooit. En als je tegen hem blijft strijden, zal dat fatale gevolgen voor je hebben.’ 14Zij waren nog niet uitgesproken of enkele hofleden dienden zich aan om hem te begeleiden naar Esthers diner.
