Mordecai persuades Esther to help
1When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly. 2But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because no-one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it. 3In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4When Esther’s eunuchs and female attendants came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them. 5Then Esther summoned Hathak, one of the king’s eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.
6So Hathak went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king’s gate. 7Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews. 8He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain it to her, and he told him to instruct her to go into the king’s presence to beg for mercy and plead with him for her people.
9Hathak went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. 10Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, 11‘All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold sceptre to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.’
12When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13he sent back this answer: ‘Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?’
15Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16‘Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.’
17So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions.
Acuerdo entre Mardoqueo y Ester
1Cuando Mardoqueo se enteró de todo lo que se había hecho, se rasgó las vestiduras, se vistió de luto, se cubrió de ceniza y salió por la ciudad dando gritos de amargura. 2Pero, como a nadie se le permitía entrar a palacio vestido de luto, solo pudo llegar hasta la puerta del rey. 3En cada provincia adonde llegaban el edicto y la orden del rey, había gran duelo entre los judíos, con ayuno, llanto y lamentos. Muchos de ellos, vestidos de luto, se tendían sobre la ceniza.
4Cuando las criadas y los eunucos de la reina Ester llegaron y le contaron lo que pasaba, ella se angustió mucho y le envió ropa a Mardoqueo para que se la pusiera en lugar de la ropa de luto; pero él no la aceptó. 5Entonces Ester mandó llamar a Hatac, uno de los eunucos del rey puesto al servicio de ella, y le ordenó que averiguara qué preocupaba a Mardoqueo y por qué actuaba de esa manera.
6Así que Hatac salió a ver a Mardoqueo, que estaba en la plaza de la ciudad, frente a la puerta del rey. 7Mardoqueo le contó todo lo que le había sucedido, mencionándole incluso la cantidad exacta de dinero que Amán había prometido pagar al tesoro real por la aniquilación de los judíos. 8También le dio una copia del texto del edicto promulgado en Susa, el cual ordenaba el exterminio, para que se lo mostrara a Ester, se lo explicara y le ordenara que se presentara ante el rey para implorar clemencia e interceder en favor de su pueblo.
9Hatac regresó y le informó a Ester lo que Mardoqueo había dicho. 10Entonces ella ordenó a Hatac que le dijera a Mardoqueo: 11«Todos los servidores del rey y el pueblo de las provincias del reino saben que, para cualquier hombre o mujer que, sin ser invitado por el rey, se acerque a él en el patio interior, hay una sola ley: la pena de muerte. La única excepción es que el rey, extendiendo su cetro de oro, le perdone la vida. En cuanto a mí, hace ya treinta días que el rey no me ha pedido presentarme ante él».
12Cuando Mardoqueo se enteró de lo que había dicho Ester, 13mandó a decirle: «No te imagines que por estar en la casa del rey serás la única que escape con vida de entre todos los judíos. 14Si ahora te quedas absolutamente callada, de otra parte vendrán el alivio y la liberación para los judíos, pero tú y la familia de tu padre pereceréis. ¡Quién sabe si no has llegado al trono precisamente para un momento como este!»
15Ester le envió a Mardoqueo esta respuesta: 16«Ve y reúne a todos los judíos que están en Susa, para que ayunen por mí. Durante tres días no comáis ni bebáis, ni de día ni de noche. Yo, por mi parte, ayunaré con mis doncellas al igual que vosotros. Cuando cumpla con esto, me presentaré ante el rey, por más que vaya en contra de la ley. ¡Y, si perezco, que perezca!»
17Entonces Mardoqueo fue y cumplió con todas las instrucciones de Ester.
