Wanderings in the wilderness
1Then we turned back and set out towards the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea,2:1 Or the Sea of Reeds as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.
2Then the Lord said to me, 3‘You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north. 4Give the people these orders: “You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. 5Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. 6You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.” ’
7The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.
8So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and travelled along the desert road of Moab.
9Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’
10(The Emites used to live there – a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. 11Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites. 12Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the Lord gave them as their possession.)
13And the Lord said, ‘Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.’ So we crossed the valley.
14Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them. 15The Lord’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp.
16Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, 17the Lord said to me, 18‘Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar. 19When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’
20(That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. 22The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor2:23 That is, Crete destroyed them and settled in their place.)
Defeat of Sihon king of Heshbon
24‘Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. 25This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’
26From the Desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying, 27‘Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot – 29as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us – until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’ 30But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done.
31The Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.’
32When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, 33the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. 34At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed2:34 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them. them – men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave us all of them. 37But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.
Peregrinación por el desierto
1»En seguida nos dirigimos hacia el desierto por la ruta del Mar Rojo, como el Señor me había ordenado. Nos llevó mucho tiempo rodear la región montañosa de Seír. 2Entonces el Señor me dijo: 3“Dejad ya de andar rondando por estas montañas, y dirigíos al norte. 4Dale estas órdenes al pueblo: ‘Pronto pasaréis por el territorio de vuestros hermanos, los descendientes de Esaú, que viven en Seír. Aunque ellos os tienen miedo a vosotros, tened mucho cuidado; 5no peleéis con ellos, porque no os daré a vosotros ninguna porción de su territorio, ni siquiera el lugar donde plantéis el pie. A Esaú le he dado por herencia la región montañosa de Seír. 6Pagadles todo el alimento y el agua que consumáis’ ”.
7»Bien sabéis que el Señor vuestro Dios os ha bendecido en todo lo que habéis emprendido, y os ha cuidado por todo este inmenso desierto. Durante estos cuarenta años, el Señor vuestro Dios ha estado con vosotros y no os ha faltado nada.
8»Así que bordeamos el territorio de nuestros hermanos, los descendientes de Esaú, que viven en Seír. Seguimos la ruta del Arabá, que viene desde Elat y Ezión Guéber. Luego dimos la vuelta y viajamos por la ruta del desierto de Moab.
9»El Señor también me dijo: “No ataquéis a los moabitas, ni los provoquéis a la guerra, porque no os daré a vosotros ninguna porción de su territorio. A los descendientes de Lot les he dado por herencia la región de Ar”».
10Tiempo atrás vivió allí un pueblo fuerte y numeroso, el de los emitas, que eran tan altos como los anaquitas. 11Tanto a ellos como a los anaquitas se les consideraba gigantes, pero los moabitas los llamaban emitas. 12Antiguamente, los horeos vivieron en Seír, pero los descendientes de Esaú los desalojaron, los destruyeron y se establecieron en su lugar, tal como hará Israel en la tierra que el Señor le va a dar en posesión.
13«El Señor ordenó: “¡En marcha! ¡Cruzad el arroyo Zéred!” Y así lo hicimos. 14Habían pasado treinta y ocho años desde que salimos de Cades Barnea hasta que cruzamos el arroyo Zéred. Para entonces ya había desaparecido del campamento toda la generación de guerreros, tal como el Señor lo había jurado. 15El Señor atacó el campamento hasta que los eliminó por completo.
16»Cuando ya no quedaba entre el pueblo ninguno de aquellos guerreros, 17el Señor me dijo: 18“Hoy vais a cruzar la frontera de Moab por la ciudad de Ar. 19Cuando lleguéis a la frontera de los amonitas, no los ataquéis ni los provoquéis a la guerra, porque no os daré a vosotros ninguna porción de su territorio. Esa tierra se la he dado por herencia a los descendientes de Lot”. 20Hace mucho tiempo, a esta región se la consideró tierra de gigantes, porque antiguamente ellos vivían allí. Los amonitas los llamaban zamzumitas. 21Eran fuertes y numerosos, y tan altos como los anaquitas, pero el Señor los destruyó por medio de los amonitas, quienes después de desalojarlos se establecieron en su lugar. 22Lo mismo hizo el Señor en favor de los descendientes de Esaú, que vivían en Seír, cuando por medio de ellos destruyó a los horeos. A estos los desalojó para que los descendientes de Esaú se establecieran en su lugar, y hasta el día de hoy residen allí. 23Y en cuanto a los aveos que vivían en las aldeas cercanas a Gaza, los caftoritas procedentes de Creta los destruyeron y se establecieron en su lugar.
Derrota de Sijón, rey de Hesbón
24»Después nos dijo el Señor: “Emprended de nuevo el viaje y cruzad el arroyo Arnón. Yo os entrego a Sijón el amorreo, rey de Hesbón, y su tierra. Lanzaos a la conquista. Declaradle la guerra. 25Hoy mismo comenzaré a infundir entre todas las naciones que hay debajo del cielo terror y espanto hacia vosotros. Cuando ellas escuchen hablar de vosotros, temblarán y se llenarán de pánico”.
26»Desde el desierto de Cademot envié mensajeros a Sijón, rey de Hesbón, con esta oferta de paz: 27“Déjanos pasar por tu país; nos mantendremos en el camino principal, sin desviarnos ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda. 28Te pagaremos todo el alimento y toda el agua que consumamos. Solo permítenos pasar, 29tal como nos lo permitieron los descendientes de Esaú, que viven en Seír, y los moabitas, que viven en Ar. Necesitamos cruzar el Jordán para entrar en la tierra que nos da el Señor nuestro Dios”.
30»Pero Sijón, rey de Hesbón, se negó a dejarnos pasar por allí, porque el Señor nuestro Dios había ofuscado su espíritu y endurecido su corazón, para hacerlo súbdito nuestro, como lo es hasta hoy. 31Entonces el Señor me dijo: “Ahora mismo voy a entregaros a Sijón y su país. Lanzaos a conquistarlo, y tomad posesión de su territorio”.
32»Cuando Sijón, acompañado de todo su ejército, salió a combatirnos en Yahaza, 33el Señor nuestro Dios nos lo entregó y lo derrotamos, junto con sus hijos y todo su ejército. 34En aquella ocasión conquistamos todas sus ciudades y las destruimos por completo; matamos a varones, mujeres y niños. ¡Nadie quedó con vida! 35Solo nos llevamos el ganado y el botín de las ciudades que conquistamos. 36Desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del arroyo Arnón, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que nos ofreciera resistencia; el Señor nuestro Dios nos entregó las ciudades una a una. 37Sin embargo, conforme a la orden del Señor nuestro Dios, no nos acercamos al territorio amonita, es decir, a toda la franja que se extiende a lo largo del arroyo Jaboc, ni a las ciudades de la región montañosa.
