Clean and unclean food
1You are the children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, 2for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
3Do not eat any detestable thing. 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.14:5 The precise identification of some of the birds and animals in this chapter is uncertain. 6You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. 7However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the hare or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. 8The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.
9Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. 10But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean.
11You may eat any clean bird. 12But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, 13the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon, 14any kind of raven, 15the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 16the little owl, the great owl, the white owl, 17the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, 18the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
19All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them. 20But any winged creature that is clean you may eat.
21Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the Lord your God.
Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
Tithes
22Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23Eat the tithe of your corn, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no land allotted to them or any inheritance of their own.
28At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29so that the Levites (who have no land allotted to them or any inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
Ren och oren mat
(3 Mos 11:1-23)
1Eftersom ni är Herrens, er Guds, barn ska ni inte rista er blodiga eller raka främre delen av huvudet när ni sörjer era döda.14:1 Se not till 3 Mos 19:27-28. 2Du är ett för Herren, din Gud, helgat folk och han har utvalt dig bland alla folk på jorden till att vara hans egendom.
3Du får inte äta av något avskyvärt. 4Av följande fyrfotadjur14:4 Se not till 3 Mos 11:2. får ni äta: nötkreatur, får och get, 5hjort, gasell, dovhjort14:5 Eller: gasell, rådjur., stenget, vildoxe, antilop och vildfår. 6De djur som både idisslar och har klövar som är delade i två delar får ni äta men inga andra. 7Dock ska ni inte äta följande, trots att de idisslar eller har kluvna klövar: kamel, hare eller klippgrävling. De idisslar14:7 Se not till 3 Mos 11:6. men har inga klövar. De är orena för er. 8Svin är också orena, för även om de har klövar, så idisslar de inte. Ni ska inte äta kött från dessa djur eller ens röra vid deras döda kroppar.
9Av det som lever i vatten får ni bara äta det som har fenor och fjäll. 10Ni får inte äta något som saknar fenor och fjäll, för det är orent för er.
11Ni kan äta alla rena fåglar. 12Men de här ska ni inte äta: örn, lammgam, grågam, 13raafågeln, falken, gladan av alla arter, 14korp av alla arter, 15berguv, jorduggla, hornuggla, hök av alla arter, 16kattuggla, tornuggla och minervauggla; 17vidare: pelikan, asgam, fiskuv, 18häger, alla arter av pipare, härfågel och fladdermus.14:18 Flera av djuren kan inte identifieras med säkerhet.
19Alla flygande smådjur är orena och får inte ätas. 20Men alla rena flygande djur får ni äta.
21Ät inga självdöda djur. Ge dem till främlingen som bor hos dig; han kan äta det. Du kan också sälja det till någon utlänning. För du är ett folk som är helgat åt Herren, din Gud.
Du ska inte koka en killing i dess moders mjölk.14:21 Se not till 2 Mos 23:19.
Fjärde budet: Sabbatsdagen och sabbatsår
22Varje år ska du lägga undan en tiondel av all din skörd. 23Detta ska du äta14:23 De åt bara en liten del. Resten skulle leviterna ha. inför Herren, din Gud, på den plats som han väljer ut åt sig, den plats där han ska låta sitt namn bo: tiondet av säden, det nya vinet och oljan, samt det förstfödda från din boskap och dina hjordar. Så ska du lära dig att alltid frukta Herren, din Gud. 24Men om platsen som Herren, din Gud, har utvalt som boning för sitt namn ligger så långt borta att du inte kan bära dit det Herren välsignat dig med, 25kan du sälja det du samlat ihop och istället ta med pengarna till den plats Herren, din Gud, väljer ut. 26Där kan du sedan köpa det du önskar, en ko, ett får, vin eller andra jästa drycker och hålla måltid inför Herren, din Gud, och vara glad, du och din familj. 27Glöm inte heller att dela med dig till leviterna som bor i dina städer, för de har inget eget område eller egendom.
28I slutet av vart tredje år ska du lagra hela ditt tionde av årets skörd i städerna. 29Det ska du sedan ge till leviterna som inte har något område bland er och till främlingarna, änkorna och de faderlösa i dina städer, så att de kan äta och bli mätta. Då kommer Herren, din Gud, att välsigna dig och ditt arbete.
