1The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
2Sons were born to David in Hebron:
his firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel;
3his second, Kileab the son of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel;
the third, Absalom the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
4the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah.
These were born to David in Hebron.
Abner goes over to David
6During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7Now Saul had had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, ‘Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?’
8Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, ‘Am I a dog’s head – on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offence involving this woman! 9May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised him on oath 10and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.’ 11Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, ‘Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.’
13‘Good,’ said David. ‘I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.’ 14Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, ‘Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.’
15So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband Paltiel son of Laish. 16Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, ‘Go back home!’ So he went back.
17Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, ‘For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18Now do it! For the Lord promised David, “By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies.” ’
19Abner also spoke to the Benjaminites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin wanted to do. 20When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast for him and his men. 21Then Abner said to David, ‘Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.’ So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab murders Abner
22Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.
24So Joab went to the king and said, ‘What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.’
26Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.
28Later, when David heard about this, he said, ‘I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy3:29 The Hebrew for leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.’
30(Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle of Gibeon.)
31Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, ‘Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner.’ King David himself walked behind the bier. 32They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also.
33The king sang this lament for Abner:
‘Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34Your hands were not bound,
your feet were not fettered.
You fell as one falls before the wicked.’
And all the people wept over him again.
35Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, ‘May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!’
36All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
38Then the king said to his men, ‘Do you not realise that a commander and a great man has fallen in Israel this day? 39And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!’

1これが、サウル家とダビデ家との長い戦いの始まりでした。ダビデがますます権力を増していくのに反して、サウル王家は衰えていきました。
2ダビデには、ヘブロンでの生活の間に何人もの息子が生まれました。長男のアムノンは、妻アヒノアムから生まれました。 3次男のキルアブは、カルメル人ナバルの未亡人だったアビガイルから生まれました。三男アブシャロムの母親は、ゲシュルの王タルマイの娘マアカでした。 4四男アドニヤはハギテから、五男シェファテヤはアビタルから、 5六男のイテレアムはエグラから生まれました。
ダビデの側についたアブネル
6内戦が続く中、アブネルはサウル家で押しも押されもせぬ政治的指導者にのし上がっていきました。 7その地位を利用して、サウル王のそばめの一人だったリツパという娘と関係をもつようになりました。そのことでサウルの子イシュ・ボシェテから責められると、 8アブネルはひどく腹を立て、言いました。「私は、たかがこれくらいのことで文句を言われなければならないユダの犬なのか。だれのおかげで、ダビデに売り渡されずにすんだのか。あなたのため、お父上サウル王のため、この私がどれほど尽くしてきたか。それなのに、あの女のことで難くせをつけて、恩を仇で返されるとは。 9-10覚えておくのだ。主のお告げどおり、ダンからベエル・シェバに至る全王国をあなたから取り上げて、ダビデに渡す。もしできなかったら、この首を差し出そう。」
11イシュ・ボシェテはもはやことばを返せませんでした。アブネルを恐れたのです。
12アブネルはダビデに使者を立て、一つの申し入れをしました。全イスラエルを引き渡すのと交換に、自分をイスラエルとユダの連合軍の司令官にしてほしいというのです。 13ダビデは答えました。「よいだろう。ただし、私の妻である、サウルの娘ミカルを連れて来てくれ。それが条件だ。」 14それからダビデは使者を立て、イシュ・ボシェテに伝えました。「私の妻ミカルを返してほしい。ペリシテ人百人のいのちと引き替えにめとった妻だから。」
15それでイシュ・ボシェテは、ミカルをその夫、ライシュの子パルティエルから取り上げました。 16パルティエルはバフリムまで泣き泣きあとを追って来たものの、アブネルに「もう帰れ」と言われて、すごすごと引き返して行きました。
17その間、アブネルはイスラエルの指導者たちと協議し、彼らが長年ダビデの支配を望んでいたことを確かめました。 18「今こそ、時がきたのだ！ 主が、『わたしはダビデによって、わたしの民をペリシテ人から、また、すべての敵から救い出そう』とおっしゃったではないか」と、アブネルは言いました。
19アブネルはまた、ベニヤミン族の指導者たちとも話し合いました。それからヘブロンへ行き、イスラエルおよびベニヤミンの人々との交渉の経過を、ダビデに報告したのです。 20二十人の部下を伴ったアブネルを、ダビデは祝宴を張ってもてなしました。 21アブネルはダビデのもとを辞する時、こう約束しました。「帰りしだい、全イスラエルを召集します。多年のお望みがかないます。全国民はきっと、あなた様を王に選ぶでしょうから。」こうしてダビデはアブネルを送り出し、アブネルは安心して出て行きました。
アブネル暗殺
22ちょうど入れ違いに、ダビデの兵士たちとヨアブが、戦利品をどっさりかかえて奇襲攻撃から戻って来ました。 23ダビデのもとを訪れたアブネルとの話し合いが、極めて友好的だったと聞くと、 24-25ヨアブは王のもとへ飛んで行きました。「あんまりではございませんか。アブネルをむざむざお帰しになるなど、もってのほかです。あの男の魂胆はご存じでしょう。われわれを攻めるために、動静を探りに来たに違いありません。」
26ヨアブは直ちにアブネルを追わせ、連れ戻すようにと命じました。追っ手はシラの井戸あたりで追いつき、いっしょに引き返しました。しかし、ダビデはこのことを知りませんでした。 27ヘブロンに着いたアブネルを、ヨアブは個人的な話があるように見せかけて、町の門のそばへ呼び出しました。そして、ヨアブはやにわに短剣を抜いてアブネルを刺し殺し、弟アサエルの復讐をしたのです。 28この一件を知らされたダビデは言いました。「私は神にかけて誓う。私も民も、このアブネル殺しの罪には全く関与していない。 29その責任は、ヨアブとその一族に降りかかるのだ。ヨアブの家は子々孫々、汚れた者、不妊の者、飢え死にする者、剣に倒れる者が絶えないだろう。」
30ヨアブとその兄弟アビシャイがアブネルを殺したのは、ギブオンの戦いで殺された弟アサエルのかたきを討つためでした。
31ダビデは、ヨアブおよび彼とともにいた全員に告げて言いました。「アブネルのために嘆き悲しみ、喪に服すのだ。」ダビデは墓地まで棺につき添い、 32アブネルをヘブロンに葬りました。王も民もみな、墓のそばで声を上げて泣きました。 33-34「アブネル、どうして愚かな死に方をしたのだ」とダビデは嘆き、歌いました。
「おまえの手は縛られず、
足もつながれなかったのに、
おまえは暗殺された、
悪い計略のいけにえとして」
民もまた、アブネルを悼んで泣きました。
35-36弔いの日、ダビデは食事を少しでも口にするように勧められましたが、日没まで食を断つと誓って聞きませんでした。こればかりでなく、ダビデのすることなすことはすべて、人々を満足させました。 37ダビデの行いをつぶさに見たユダとイスラエルの全国民は、それによってアブネルの死の責任がダビデにないことを認めたのです。
38ダビデは家来たちに言いました。「今日、イスラエルで一人の偉大な指導者、偉大な人物が倒れた。 39私は神に選ばれた王だが、ツェルヤのこの二人の息子に何もできない。どうか主が、このような悪を行った者に報いられるように。」
