David enrols the fighting men
1Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, ‘Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.’
2So the king said to Joab and the army commanders24:2 Septuagint (see also verse 4 and 1 Chron. 21:2); Hebrew Joab the army commander with him, ‘Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and enrol the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.’
3But Joab replied to the king, ‘May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?’
4The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enrol the fighting men of Israel.
5After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer, south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer. 6They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around towards Sidon. 7Then they went towards the fortress of Tyre and all the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba in the Negev of Judah.
8After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: in Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.
10David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, ‘I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.’
11Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: 12‘Go and tell David, “This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.” ’
13So Gad went to David and said to him, ‘Shall there come on you three24:13 Septuagint (see also 1 Chron. 21:12); Hebrew seven years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.’
14David said to Gad, ‘I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.’
15So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 16When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, ‘Enough! Withdraw your hand.’ The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, ‘I have sinned; I, the shepherd,24:17 Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint; Masoretic Text does not have the shepherd. have done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall on me and my family.’
David builds an altar
18On that day Gad went to David and said to him, ‘Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.’ 19So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad. 20When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming towards him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.
21Araunah said, ‘Why has my lord the king come to his servant?’
‘To buy your threshing-floor,’ David answered, ‘so that I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped.’
22Araunah said to David, ‘Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing-sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23Your Majesty, Araunah24:23 Some Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint; most Hebrew manuscripts King Araunah gives all this to the king.’ Araunah also said to him, ‘May the Lord your God accept you.’
24But the king replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.’
So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels24:24 That is, about 575 grams of silver for them. 25David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer on behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

11Sa wala pa makabangon si David sa sunod nga buntag, miingon ang Ginoo kang Gad nga propeta ni David, 12“Adto kang David ug ingna siya nga mao kini ang akong giingon: ‘Aduna akoy tulo ka silot nga papilian kanimo. Pagpili ug usa kay buhaton ko kini.’ ”
13Busa miadto si Gad kang David ug miingon kaniya, “Hain niining tulo ang gusto mong isilot sa Ginoo kanimo? Tulo ka tuig24:13 Tulo ka tuig: Mao kini sa ubang mga kopya sa Septuagint. (Tan-awa usab sa 1 Cro. 21:12.) Sa Hebreo, pito. nga gutom sa imong nasod, tulo ka bulan nga pagkalagiw gikan sa inyong mga kaaway, o tulo ka adlaw nga katalagman sa imong nasod? Hunahunaa kana ug maayo, ug pahibaloa ako kon unsa ang itubag ko sa Ginoo nga nagpadala kanako.”
14Miingon si David kang Gad, “Naglisod ako sa pagpili! Maayo pa nga ang Ginoo ang mosilot kanamo kay maloloy-on kaayo siya kaysa itugyan ako sa kamot sa mga tawo.”
15Busa nagpadala ang Ginoo ug katalagman sa Israel gikan niadtong buntaga hangtod sa panahon nga iyang gitakda. Ug 70,000 ka tawo ang namatay gikan sa Dan hangtod sa Beersheba. 16Sa dihang laglagon na sa anghel ang Jerusalem, nausab ang hunahuna sa Ginoo. Busa miingon siya sa anghel nga misilot sa mga tawo, “Husto na! Ayaw na silag siloti.” Niadtong tungora didto ang anghel sa Ginoo sa may giokanan ni Arauna nga Jebusihanon.
Naghimo si David ug Halaran
17Sa dihang nakita ni David ang anghel nga mipatay sa mga tawo, miingon siya sa Ginoo, “Ako ang nakasala. Kining mga tawhana inosente sama sa mga karnero. Wala silay nahimong sala. Ako na lang ug ang akong pamilya ang siloti.”
18Niadtong adlawa miadto si Gad kang David ug miingon kaniya, “Tungas ngadto sa giokanan ni Arauna nga Jebusihanon ug paghimo didto ug halaran alang sa Ginoo.” 19Busa mitungas si David sumala sa gisugo sa Ginoo pinaagi kang Gad. 20Sa dihang nakita ni Arauna nga nagapadulong si David ug ang iyang mga tawo, migawas siya ug miluhod atubangan ni David agig pagtahod kaniya. 21Miingon si Arauna, “Mahal nga Hari, nganong mianhi ka?” Mitubag si David, “Ania ako aron sa pagpalit sa imong giokanan, kay maghimo akog halaran alang sa Ginoo, aron maundang na ang katalagman.” 22Miingon si Arauna, “Kuhaa ug ihalad sa Dios ang bisan unsa nga imong gusto, Mahal nga Hari. Aniay mga baka alang sa halad nga sinunog, ug mga yugo ug mga tabla sa giokanan nga magamit ingon nga sugnod. 23Mahal nga Hari, ihatag ko kining tanan kanimo, ug hinaut nga dawaton sa Ginoo nga imong Dios ang imong halad.”
24Apan mitubag si David kaniya, “Dili mahimo. Paliton ko gayod kini kanimo. Dili ako maghalad ngadto sa Ginoo nga akong Dios sa mga halad nga sinunog nga walay bili.” Busa gipalit ni David ang giokanan ug ang mga baka sa kantidad nga 50 ka buok nga salapi. 25Unya naghimo siya didto ug halaran alang sa Ginoo. Naghalad siyag mga halad nga sinunog ug halad alang sa pakigda-it. Gitubag sa Ginoo ang pag-ampo ni David alang sa Israel, ug naundang ang katalagman.
