David hears of Saul’s death
1After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2On the third day a man arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honour.
3‘Where have you come from?’ David asked him.
He answered, ‘I have escaped from the Israelite camp.’
4‘What happened?’ David asked. ‘Tell me.’
‘The men fled from the battle,’ he replied. ‘Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.’
5Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, ‘How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?’
6‘I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,’ the young man said, ‘and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7When he turned round and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, “What can I do?”
8‘He asked me, “Who are you?”
‘ “An Amalekite,” I answered.
9‘Then he said to me, “Stand here by me and kill me! I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.”
10‘So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.’
11Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. 12They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13David said to the young man who brought him the report, ‘Where are you from?’
‘I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,’ he answered.
14David asked him, ‘Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?’
15Then David called one of his men and said, ‘Go, strike him down!’ So he struck him down, and he died. 16For David had said to him, ‘Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, “I killed the Lord’s anointed.” ’
David’s lament for Saul and Jonathan
17David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan, 18and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):
19‘A gazelle1:19 Gazelle here symbolises a human dignitary. lies slain on your heights, Israel.
How the mighty have fallen!
20‘Tell it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
lest the daughters of the Philistines be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.
21‘Mountains of Gilboa,
may you have neither dew nor rain,
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.1:21 Or / nor fields that yield grain for offerings
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul – no longer rubbed with oil.
22‘From the blood of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23Saul and Jonathan –
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
24‘Daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.
25‘How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,
more wonderful than that of women.
27‘How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!’

サウルの死を知ったダビデ
1-2サウルが死んだあと、ダビデはアマレク人を討って、ツィケラグに引き揚げて来ました。その三日後、イスラエル軍から一人の男がやって来ました。男は破れた服をまとい、頭に土をかぶっていて、ひと目で喪に服していることがわかりました。彼はダビデの前に出ると、深い敬意を表して地にひれ伏しました。
3「どこから来たのだ」とダビデが聞くと、「イスラエルの陣営から逃れてまいりました」と彼は答えました。
4「何かあったのか？ 戦いの様子はどうなのだ。」ダビデはせき込んで尋ねました。
「イスラエルは散り散りです。何千という兵士が死に、また負傷して野に倒れています。サウル王も、ヨナタン王子も殺されました。」
5「サウル王とヨナタンが死んだと！ どうしてわかったのだ。」
6「私はギルボア山におりましたが、槍にすがってようやく立っている王様に、敵の戦車が迫るのを見たのです。 7王様は私を見るなり、こっちへ来いと叫ばれました。急いでおそばに駆け寄りますと、 8『おまえはだれか』とお尋ねになります。『アマレク人でございます』とお答えしますと、 9『さあ、私を殺してくれ。この苦しみから救ってくれ。死にきれないのがつらくて耐えられないのだ』とおっしゃるのです。 10そこで私は、もう時間の問題だと察したので、あの方にとどめを刺しました。そして、あの方の王冠と腕輪の一つを持ってまいりました。」
11この知らせを聞いて、ダビデと部下たちは悲しみのあまり、めいめいの衣服を引き裂きました。 12彼らは、死んだサウル王とその子ヨナタン、それに、主の民といのちを落としたイスラエル人のために喪に服し、泣きながら終日断食しました。
13ダビデは、王の死を告げに来た若者に言いました。「おまえはどこの者だ。」
若者は答えました。「アマレク人で、在留異国人でございます。」
14「どうして、神に選ばれた王を手にかけたのか」と、ダビデは詰め寄りました。
15そして部下の若者の一人に、「この男を打て！」と命じたのです。若者は剣を振りかざして走り寄り、そのアマレク人の首を打ち落としました。
16ダビデは言いました。「自業自得だ。自分の口で、主がお立てになった王を殺したと証言したのだから。」
哀悼の歌
17-18ダビデは、サウル王とヨナタンにささげる哀歌を作り、これがイスラエル中でのちのちまで歌い継がれるように命じました。英雄詩にその詩が記されています。
19「ああ、イスラエル。
おまえの誇りと喜びは、しかばねとなって丘に横たわる。
大いなる英雄たちは倒れた。
20ペリシテ人には告げるな。喜ばせてなるものか。
ガテとアシュケロンの町にも告げるな。
神を知らない者たちを勝ち誇らせてなるものか。
21ギルボアの山よ、
露も降りるな。雨も降るな。
いけにえのささげられた野にも。
偉大なサウル王が倒れた地だから。
ああ、その盾は油も塗られず打ち捨てられた。
22最強の敵を打ち殺したサウルとヨナタンは
空手で戦場から引き揚げたことはなかった。
23ああ、サウルもヨナタンもどれほど愛され、
どれほどすぐれた人物であったことか。
生死を共にした彼ら。
鷲よりも速く、獅子よりも強かった。
24さあ、イスラエルの女よ、サウル王のために泣け。
王は、おまえたちを惜しげなく着飾らせ、
金の飾りをまとわせてくれた。
25偉大な英雄たちは、戦いの最中に倒れた。
ヨナタンは山の上で殺された。
26わが兄弟ヨナタン。
あなたのために、どれほど涙を流したことか。
あなたをどれほど愛していたことか。
あなたの私への愛は、女の愛も及ばなかった。
27ああ、勇士たちは倒れ、
武具は奪い取られ、彼らは死んだ。」
