David destroys the Amalekites
1David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it, 2and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.
3When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. 4So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5David’s two wives had been captured – Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 6David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.
7Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, ‘Bring me the ephod.’ Abiathar brought it to him, 8and David enquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?’
‘Pursue them,’ he answered. ‘You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.’
9David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. 10Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
11They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat – 12part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
13David asked him, ‘Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?’
He said, ‘I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. 14We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag.’
15David asked him, ‘Can you lead me down to this raiding party?’
He answered, ‘Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them.’
16He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and revelling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. 17David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled. 18David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. 19Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. 20He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, ‘This is David’s plunder.’
21Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, ‘Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.’
23David replied, ‘No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All shall share alike.’ 25David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
26When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, ‘Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.’
27David sent it to those who were in Bethel, Ramoth Negev and Jattir; 28to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa 29and Rakal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites and the Kenites; 30to those in Hormah, Bor Ashan, Athak 31and Hebron; and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.
Gilaglag ni David ang mga Amalekanhon
1Sa ikatulo ka adlaw, miabot si David ug ang iyang mga tawo sa Ziklag. Nasayran nila nga gisulong sa mga Amalekanhon ang Negev, apil na ang Ziklag. Wala nila sila pangpatya kondili gipangbihag lang nila. 3Nakita ni David ug sa iyang mga tawo nga nasunog ang ilang dapit, ug wala na ang ilang mga asawa ug mga kabataan. 4Busa nanghilak sila sa hilabihan hangtod nangaluya sila. 5Gibihag usab ang duha ka asawa ni David nga si Ahinoam nga taga-Jezreel ug si Abigail nga asawa kaniadto ni Nabal nga taga-Carmel. 6Misamot pa gayod ang problema ni David tungod kay nasuko ang iyang mga tawo kaniya tungod sa pagkabihag sa ilang mga kabataan, ug nagplano sila sa pagbato kaniya. Apan gilig-on si David sa Ginoo nga iyang Dios.
7Unya miingon si David kang Abiatar nga pari, nga anak ni Ahimelec, “Dad-a dinhi ang efod. Busa gidala kadto ni Abiatar kaniya.” 8Unya nangutana si David sa Ginoo, “Gukdon ba namo ang nagsulong kanamo? Mapildi ba namo sila?” Mitubag ang Ginoo, “Sige, gukda ninyo sila kay mapildi gayod ninyo sila, ug maluwas ninyo ang mga gipangbihag.” 9Busa milakaw si David ug ang iyang 600 ka mga tawo hangtod nga nakaabot sila sa Lugut sa Besor. Nagpabilin didto 10ang 200 niya ka mga tawo kay dili na sila makatabok sa lugut tungod sa labihang kakapoy. Apan nagpadayon si David ug ang 400 niya ka mga tawo sa paggukod.
11Unya, may nakita ang mga tawo ni David nga usa ka Ehiptohanon sa uma, ug gidala nila kini kang David. Gihatagan nila kinig tubig ug pan, 12ug usa ka hakop nga binulad nga igos ug duha ka hakop nga pasas, tungod kay wala gayod siya makakaon o makainom sulod sa tulo ka adlaw. Pagkahuman niya ug kaon, mibaskog siya. 13Gipangutana siya ni David, “Kinsa ang imong agalon ug taga-asa ka?” Mitubag siya, “Usa ako ka Ehiptohanon ug ulipon ako sa usa ka Amalekanhon. Gipasagdan ako sa akong agalon tulo na ka adlaw ang milabay, tungod kay nagsakit ako. 14Gisulong namo ang bahin sa Negev nga ginapuy-an sa mga Keretnon, sa teritoryo sa Juda, ug apil usab ang bahin sa Negev nga ginapuy-an sa mga kaliwat ni Caleb. Ug gisunog namo ang Ziklag.” 15Nangutana si David kaniya, “Magiyahan mo ba kami sa ilang kampo?” Mitubag siya, “Isaad una kanako sa presensya sa Dios nga dili mo ako patyon o itugyan sa akong agalon, ug unya giyahan ko kamo didto.”
16Busa misaad si David, ug unya gikuyogan sila sa Ehiptohanon didto sa gikampohan sa mga nanulong. Ug didto nakita nila ang mga Amalekanhon nga nagkatag sa pagpangaon, pag-inom, ug paglipay tungod kay daghan ang ilang nailog gikan sa mga Filistihanon ug gikan sa yuta sa Juda. 17Gisulong sila ni David ug sa iyang mga tawo, ug nagsangka sila tibuok gabii ug hangtod sa sunod pang gabii. Walay nakaikyas sa mga Amalekanhon gawas lang sa 400 ka mga pamatan-on nga nagsakay ug mga kamelyo. 18Nabawi ni David ang tanang gipanguha sa mga Amalekanhon apil na ang iyang duha ka asawa. 19Wala gayoy nawala, bata o tigulang, lalaki o babaye, o bisan unsa sa gipanguha sa mga Amalekanhon. Nabawi kining tanan ni David, 20apil na ang tanang mga karnero ug mga baka. Samtang giabog sa mga tawo ni David ang tanang mga mananap sa pag-una kanila, miingon sila, “Mga nailog kini ni David!”
21Sa dihang nakabalik na sila si David sa Lugut sa Besor, gitagbo sila niadtong 200 niya ka mga tawo nga nagpabilin tungod sa labihang kakapoy. Nagpaduol sila si David sa ila ug gipangumusta niya sila. 22Apan ang mga daotan ug badlongon nga mga tawo ni David miingon, “Dili nato sila bahinan sa atong mga nailog sa mga Amalekanhon tungod kay wala sila mouban kanato. Ibalik lang kanila ang ilang mga asawa ug mga anak, ug palakwa na sila.” 23Mitubag si David, “Mga igsoon, ayaw kamo paghinakog sa gihatag sa Ginoo kanato. Gipanalipdan niya kita ug gipadaog sa mga nanulong kanato. 24Wala gayoy mosugot nianang inyong gisulti. Angayng bahinan ang tanan! Ang bahin sa mga nagpabilin sa pagbantay sa atong mga gamit kinahanglan nga sama usab sa mga miadto sa gira.” 25Sukad niadto, gihimo na kini ni David nga tulumanon ug lagda alang sa mga Israelinhon ug ginatuman pa kini hangtod karong panahona.
26Sa pag-abot nila ni David sa Ziklag, gipadala niya ang uban nilang nailog sa mga tigdumala sa Juda nga iyang mga higala, uban niining mensahe: “Ania ang gasa ko kaninyo gikan sa mga nailog namo sa mga kaaway sa Ginoo.” 27Ang gipadad-an niya mao ang mga tigdumala sa mosunod nga mga lungsod: Betel, Ramot Negev, Jatir, 28Aroer, Sifmot, Eshtemoa, 29Racal, sa mga lungsod sa mga Jerameelinhon ug mga Kenihanon, 30sa Horma, Bor Ashan, Atak, 31Hebron, ug sa uban pang mga dapit nga naadtoan ni David ug sa iyang mga tawo.
