Hannah’s prayer
1Then Hannah prayed and said:
‘My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn2:1 Horn here symbolises strength; also in verse 10. is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
2‘There is no-one holy like the Lord;
there is no-one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
3‘Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
4‘The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
5Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6‘The Lord brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
7The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts.
8He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and makes them inherit a throne of honour.
‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.
‘It is not by strength that one prevails;
10those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
‘He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.’
11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Eli’s wicked sons
12Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. 13Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled 14and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, ‘Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.’
16If the person said to him, ‘Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want,’ the servant would answer, ‘No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.’
17This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they2:17 Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint; Masoretic Text people were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.
18But Samuel was ministering before the Lord – a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, ‘May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to2:20 Dead Sea Scrolls; Masoretic Text and asked from the Lord.’ Then they would go home. 21And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.
22Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23So he said to them, ‘Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25If one person sins against another, God2:25 Or the judges may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?’ His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
26And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favour with the Lord and with people.
Prophecy against the house of Eli
27Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites. 29Why do you2:29 The Hebrew is plural. scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?”
30‘Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: “I promised that members of your family would minister before me for ever.” But now the Lord declares: “Far be it from me! Those who honour me I will honour, but those who despise me will be disdained. 31The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no-one in it will reach old age, 32and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no-one in your family line will ever reach old age. 33Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.
34‘ “And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you – they will both die on the same day. 35I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always. 36Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead, ‘Appoint me to some priestly office so that I can have food to eat.’ ” ’
A oração de Ana
1Ana fez a seguinte oração:
“Como me sinto feliz no Senhor!
Nele tenho novas forças!
Agora já posso responder a quem me quer mal,
porque o Senhor deu solução ao meu problema.
Como me sinto feliz!
2Ninguém é tão santo como o Senhor.
Não há outro deus,
nem há rocha alguma como o nosso Deus.
3Deixem de ser tão orgulhosos e altivos!
O Senhor é Deus de sabedoria,
e julgará as vossas ações.
4Os arcos dos heróis foram quebrados.
Os que fraquejam foram revestidos de força.
5Os que viviam na fartura agora
dão tudo por uma côdea de pão;
e os que andavam a morrer de fome agora são fartos.
A que era estéril tem agora sete filhos;
e a que ia tendo sempre filhos agora deixou de os ter.
6O Senhor é quem tira a vida,
mas é também quem a dá.
Ele faz descer ao mundo dos mortos2.6 No hebraico, Sheol, é traduzido, ao longo do livro, por mundo dos mortos. Segundo o pensamento hebraico do Antigo Testamento, é o lugar dos mortos, mas não necessariamente como um sepulcro ou sepultura, que é um lugar de morte e definhamento, mas sim um lugar de existência consciente, embora sombria e infeliz.

7O Senhor tira a riqueza,
mas também sabe dá-la;
abaixa, mas também exalta.
8Tira o pobre do pó da terra,
sim, da mais baixa miséria,
e trata-o como príncipes,
fazendo-o sentar-se em lugares de honra.
Toda a Terra pertence ao Senhor;
foi ele quem deu estruturas a todo este mundo.
9Protegerá os seus fiéis;
mas o malvado será silenciado, lançado nas trevas.
O ser humano não tem capacidade de o enfrentar pela força.
10Os que contendem com o Senhor serão aniquilados;
trovejará desde os céus sobre eles.
O Senhor julga sobre a Terra,
duma extremidade à outra.
Dará força ao seu rei,
exaltará o poder do seu ungido.”
11Então regressaram todos a Ramá, mas sem Samuel; este menino tornou-se um servidor do Senhor, ajudando o sacerdote Eli.
A maldade dos filhos de Eli
12No entanto, os filhos de Eli eram pessoas de muito má conduta que não manifestavam qualquer interesse pelo Senhor. 13Tinham por hábito, sempre que alguém estava a oferecer um sacrifício, e enquanto a carne do animal do sacrifício cozia, mandar um criado, com um grafo de três dentes, 14pô-lo dentro da caldeira, dizendo que fosse o que fosse que o garfo espetasse seria levado para os filhos de Eli. E faziam isso com todas as pessoas que iam a Silo para adorar. 15Outras vezes o criado, mesmo antes do rito de queima da gordura sobre o altar, reclamava um determinado pedaço da carne, antes que fosse cozida, para a assar depois.
16Se aquele que apresentava o sacrifício dissesse: “Leva quanto quiseres, mas deixa primeiro que a gordura seja queimada”, então o criado respondia: “Não. Dá-mo agora, se não tiro-to à força.”
17Assim, o pecado destes jovens era muito grande aos olhos do Senhor, pois tratavam com desprezo as ofertas que o povo trazia perante Deus.
18Samuel, apesar de criança, estava já ao serviço do Senhor e vestia uma veste sacerdotal2.18 No hebraico, éfode de linho. Peça de vestuário habitualmente usada pelos sacerdotes, aqui provavelmente usada por devoção. como o dos sacerdotes. 19Todos os anos a mãe fazia-lhe uma túnica de linho, à medida, que lhe trazia quando vinha com o marido para o sacrifício anual. 20Antes de regressarem a casa, Eli abençoava Elcana e Ana, pedindo a Deus que lhes desse outros filhos que substituíssem aquele que tinha oferecido ao Senhor. 21E o Senhor respondeu dando a Ana três rapazes e duas meninas. Samuel continuava a crescer e permanecia ao serviço do Senhor.
22Eli era já muito idoso, mas mantinha-se ao corrente de tudo o que se ia passando à sua volta. Sabia, por exemplo, que os seus filhos seduziam mulheres que se juntavam em grupos à entrada da tenda do encontro. 23“Tenho ouvido coisas terríveis sobre o que vocês têm feito 24e que o povo do Senhor me vem contando”, dizia Eli aos filhos. “Meus filhos, é muito mau o que ouço dizer a vosso respeito. 25É muito grave levar o povo do Senhor a pecar. O pecado tem sempre o seu castigo, e isso é tanto mais verdade no vosso caso, pois isso que fazem é pecado contra o Senhor!” Mas eles não ligavam ao que o pai lhes dizia; por isso, o Senhor tinha já decidido tirar-lhes a vida.
26O pequeno Samuel ia crescendo em tamanho e ganhava a simpatia de toda a gente, além de que se tornava objeto do favor do Senhor.
Profecia contra a casa de Eli
27Um dia, veio ter com Eli um servo de Deus que lhe comunicou a seguinte mensagem da parte do Senhor: “Não revelei eu o meu poder, quando o povo de Israel era escravo no Egito? 28Não escolhi o teu antepassado Levi, de entre todos os seus irmãos, para ser meu sacerdote e sacrificar junto do altar, queimar incenso e trazer as vestimentas sacerdotais enquanto me servia? E não dei também as ofertas apresentadas em sacrifício aos sacerdotes? 29Então porque são tão vorazes em relação às outras ofertas que me são trazidas? Porque tens respeitado mais a vontade dos teus filhos do que a minha? Porque é que tanto tu como eles têm engordado com o melhor dos sacrifícios que me são oferecidos pelo meu povo?
30Por isso, eu, o Senhor Deus de Israel, declaro que apesar de ter prometido que os descendentes da tribo de Levi seriam sempre meus sacerdotes, seria insensato pensar que os vossos atos poderiam continuar. Eu darei honra apenas a quem me honra e afastarei aqueles que me desprezam. 31Porei um fim à tua família, para que não me sirvam mais como sacerdotes. Cada um dos seus membros morrerá antes do tempo normal. Nenhum chegará a velho. 32Terás ocasião de constatar a prosperidade que darei ao meu povo, mas tu e a tua família achar-se-ão em necessidade e angústia. Ninguém entre vós alcançará uma idade avançada. 33Os que prolongarem o seu tempo de vida será para viverem na amargura e no desgosto; os seus filhos morrerão na força da idade.
34E para te provar que é verdade aquilo que te foi dito, e que há de acontecer, farei com que os teus dois filhos, Hofni e Fineias, morram no mesmo dia! 35Depois suscitarei um sacerdote fiel para me servir e fazer tudo aquilo que eu disser. Abençoarei os seus descendentes; e todos os da sua linhagem serão sacerdotes diante do meu ungido para sempre. 36Então os da tua família se inclinarão perante ele, para pedir dinheiro e comida: ‘Rogamos-te’, dirão eles, ‘que nos deixes ter alguma função entre os sacerdotes, para que tenhamos alguma coisa para comer.’ ”
