1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Love and hatred for fellow believers
3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God2:5 Or word, God’s love is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister2:9 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family; also in verse 11; and in 3:15, 17; 4:20; 5:16. is still in the darkness. 10Anyone who loves their brother and sister2:10 The Greek word for brother and sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family; also in 3:10; 4:20, 21. lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
Reasons for writing
12I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
14I write to you, dear children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,

I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
On not loving the world
15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father2:15 Or world, the Father’s love is not in them. 16For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives for ever.
Warnings against denying the Son
18Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.2:20 Some manuscripts and you know all things 21I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist – denying the Father and the Son. 23No-one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
24As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is what he promised us – eternal life.
26I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.
God’s children and sin
28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
29If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
1나의 믿음의 자녀들이여, 여러분이 죄를 짓지 않게 하려고 나는 이 편지를 씁 니다. 그러나 만일 누가 죄를 짓더라도 아버지 앞에서 우리를 변호해 주시는 의로우신 예수 그리스도가 계십니다.
2그분은 우리 죄를 위해 2:2 또는 ‘화목제물’화해의 제물이 되셨습니다. 우리 죄만 아니라 온 세상의 죄를 위해 그렇게 되신 것입니다.
믿음을 증명하는 것
3우리가 하나님의 계명을 지키면 이것으로 우리는 그분을 안다는 확신을 갖게 됩니다.
4하나님을 안다고 하면서 그분의 계명을 지키지 않는 사람은 거짓말쟁이며 진리가 그 속에 있지 않습니다.
5그러나 누구든지 하나님의 말씀을 지키면 하나님의 사랑이 그에게서 완전해집니다. 이것으로 우리는 그분 안에 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.
6하나님 안에서 산다고 하는 사람은 예수님이 사신 것과 똑같이 살아야 합니다.
7사랑하는 여러분, 내가 여러분에게 새 계명을 쓰는 것이 아니라 여러분이 처음부터 가졌던 옛 계명을 쓰고 있습니다. 이 옛 계명은 여러분이 이미 들은 말씀입니다.
8그러나 내가 다시 여러분에게 새 계명을 씁니다. 어두움이 지나가고 참 빛이 벌써 비치고 있으므로 그 계명은 그리스도와 여러분에게 참된 것입니다.
9빛 가운데 산다고 하면서 형제를 미워하면 아직도 어두움 속에 사는 사람입니다.
10형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 가운데 살기 때문에 자기에게 거리낄 만한 것이 없습니다.
11그러나 형제를 미워하는 사람은 아직도 어두움 속에 있고 어두움 속에서 살고 있는 것입니다. 어두움이 그의 눈을 멀게 했기 때문에 그는 자기가 어디로 가고 있는지 알지 못합니다.
12자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분의 죄가 예수님의 이름으로 용서를 받기 때문입니다.
132:13 원문에는 ‘아버지들’부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 세상이 창조되기 전부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 악한 자를 이겼기 때문입니다.
14자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 2:14 원문에는 14절 이하의 ‘쓰다’ 는 말이 모두 과거 시제로 되어 있다.쓰는 것은 여러분이 하나님 아버지를 알고 있기 때문입니다. 부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 맨 처음부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 언제나 하나님의 말씀에 굳게 서서 마귀를 이겼기 때문입니다.
세상을 사랑하지 말아라
15여러분은 세상이나 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 그 사람에게는 하나님 아버지에 대한 사랑이 없습니다.
16세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육신의 정욕과 눈의 욕심과 삶에 대한 자랑은 모두 아버지에게서 나온 것이 아니라 세상에서 나온 것입니다.
17이 세상도 그것에 대한 욕망도 다 지나가지만 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 삽니다.
18자녀들이여, 지금은 마지막 때입니다. 여러분도 그리스도의 원수가 온다는 말을 들었지만 이미 많은 원수들이 나타났습니다. 그래서 우리는 마지막 때가 된 것을 압니다.
19그들은 우리에게 속하지 않았으므로 우리 가운데서 나갔습니다. 만일 그들이 우리에게 속하였다면 우리와 함께 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 그들이 우리에게서 떨어져 나감으로 우리에게 속하지 않은 것이 드러났습니다.
20여러분은 거룩하신 분에게서 2:20 또는 ‘기름 부으심을 받고’성령을 받아 이 모든 것을 알고 있습니다.
21내가 여러분에게 이 글을 쓰는 것은 여러분이 진리를 몰라서가 아니라 오히려 여러분이 진리를 알고 거짓은 진리에서 나오는 것이 아님을 알고 있기 때문입니다.
22거짓말하는 사람이 누굽니까? 예수님이 그리스도라는 것을 부정하는 사람이 아닙니까? 하나님 아버지와 아들을 모른다고 하는 사람이 바로 그리스도의 원수입니다.
23아들을 모른다고 하는 사람은 아버지를 모시지 못하고 아들을 인정하는 사람은 아버지를 모시고 있는 것입니다.
24여러분은 처음부터 들은 것을 잊지 않도록 하십시오. 그러면 여러분도 아들과 하나님 아버지 안에서 살게 될 것입니다.
25이것이 바로 그리스도께서 직접 우리에게 약속해 주신 영원한 생명입니다.
26여러분을 속이려는 사람들에 대하여 내가 이것을 썼습니다.
27여러분에게는 그리스도께서 부어 주신 성령이 있기 때문에 아무에게서도 가르침을 받을 필요가 없습니다. 성령께서 여러분에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 주십니다. 그분의 가르치심은 참되고 거짓이 없습니다. 그러므로 성령님이 가르치신 대로 여러분은 언제나 그리스도 안에서 생활하십시오.
28자녀들이여, 여러분은 그리스도 안에서 사십시오. 그러면 그리스도께서 다시 오실 때 부끄러움을 당하지 않고 떳떳이 그분을 뵙게 될 것입니다.
29하나님이 의로우신 분이라는 것을 안다면 의롭게 사는 사람들이 모두 그분의 자녀들이라는 것을 잊지 마십시오.
