Paul’s rights as an apostle
1Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? 2Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3This is my defence to those who sit in judgment on me. 4Don’t we have the right to food and drink? 5Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas9:5 That is, Peter? 6Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living?
7Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9For it is written in the Law of Moses: ‘Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.’9:9 Deut. 25:4 Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever ploughs and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
13Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.
15But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. 16For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel.
Paul’s use of his freedom
19Though I am free and belong to no-one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
The need for self-discipline
24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last for ever. 26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
Paolo parla del suo apostolato
1Non sono forse libero? Non sono apostolo? Non sono io quello che ha visto coi propri occhi Gesù, nostro Signore? E voi? Non siete voi il risultato del mio lavoro per il Signore? 2Se per altri non sono apostolo, lo sarò certamente per voi, perché voi siete stati convertiti a Cristo per mezzo del mio lavoro. 3Ecco come rispondo a chi mi critica.
4Non ho anchʼio il diritto di mangiare e bere? O di essere ospitato in casa vostra? 5E se avessi una moglie credente, non potrei, forse, portarla con me in questi viaggi, come fanno gli altri apostoli, i fratelli del Signore, e lo stesso Pietro? 6O forse soltanto io e Barnaba dobbiamo lavorare per mantenerci, mentre voi pensate agli altri? 7Da quando in qua un soldato presta servizio nellʼesercito a proprie spese? E chi è che pianta una vigna e non ne mangia lʼuva? E qual è quel pastore, che bada al gregge senza bere il latte di quelle pecore?
8Non sto soltanto portandovi esempi di vita quotidiana. 9Anche nella legge di Mosè è scritto: «Non mettere la museruola al bue che trebbia il grano» (così può mangiare quando lavora). Credete che Dio si preoccupi soltanto dei buoi, quando parla così? 10O non lo dice, piuttosto, proprio per noi? Certo! Questa regola fu senzʼaltro scritta per noi, per dimostrare che i cristiani che lavorano devono essere ripagati da quelli che vengono aiutati. Infatti, quelli che arano e trebbiano si aspettano una parte del raccolto.
11Allora, se noi abbiamo piantato nelle vostre anime buoni semi spirituali, pensate che sia troppo chiedervi in cambio cibo e vestiti? 12Voi date queste cose ad altri, e fate bene, ma non siamo forse noi quelli che ne hanno più diritto? Però non ne abbiamo mai approfittato, anzi facciamo fronte alle nostre necessità senza il vostro aiuto. Non vi abbiamo mai chiesto niente di alcun genere, per non mettere ostacoli allʼannuncio di Cristo. 13Non sapete che quelli che lavorano nel tempio di Dio si servono delle offerte per le loro necessità? Non sapete anche che quelli che si occupano dellʼaltare di Dio ricevono una parte di ciò che viene offerto al Signore? 14Allo stesso modo, il Signore ha ordinato che quelli che annunciano il Vangelo hanno il diritto di vivere di questo lavoro. 15Per quanto mi riguarda, io non vi ho mai chiesto un soldo; e non vi scrivo per far valere i miei diritti. Preferirei piuttosto morire di fame, che perdere la soddisfazione di predicare a voi senza la minima ricompensa! 16Anche se annuncio il Vangelo, non è che mi dia tante arie, perché è un dovere che sento fino in fondo, e guai a me se non evangelizzo!
17Se predicassi il Vangelo di mia spontanea volontà, meriterei una ricompensa, ma poiché il Signore me lʼha ordinato, faccio semplicemente il mio dovere. 18Qual è dunque la mia ricompensa? La soddisfazione di annunciare il Vangelo gratuitamente, senza far valere quei diritti che mi darebbe questa predicazione.
19Anche se sono libero e non appartengo a nessuno, sono diventato di mia spontanea volontà, e con gioia, il servo di tutti, per portare a Cristo il maggior numero possibile di persone. 20Quando sono tra gli Ebrei, vivo come loro, essi ascoltano il Vangelo e così li posso portare a Cristo. Essi seguono le cerimonie e le usanze ebraiche, ed io mi comporto come uno di loro, (benché io stesso non sia sottoposto alla legge ebraica), perché il mio unico scopo è quello di condurli a Cristo. 21Anche con i pagani sono accondiscendente al massimo, (facendo, però, sempre ciò che è giusto per un cristiano). E così, mostrandomi dʼaccordo, riesco a guadagnarmi la loro fiducia ed a portarli alla conversione.
22Anche quando sono con i deboli nella fede, mi adeguo a loro; proprio così, cerco di adattarmi ad ogni tipo di persona, purché possa parlargli di Cristo, e Cristo lo salvi. 23Tutto questo lo faccio per amore del Vangelo e per ricevere anchʼio con gli altri le sue benedizioni.
Sacrificarsi per vincere
24Quando si fa una corsa, molti corrono, ma soltanto uno vince il premio. Perciò, correte anche voi per vincere! 25Sapete bene che gli atleti, durante gli allenamenti, si sottopongono ad una rigida disciplina, e soltanto per ottenere in premio una corona che non dura. Noi, invece, lo facciamo per ottenere una corona che durerà per sempre. 26Perciò, io corro dritto al traguardo, mettendocela tutta; lotto come un pugile che vuol vincere e non tira colpi a vuoto; 27mi sottopongo a dei sacrifici come un atleta e tengo il mio corpo a disciplina, per paura di essere squalificato e messo da parte, proprio io che ho iscritto gli altri alla gara!
