The nature of true apostleship
1This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. 2Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.
6Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, ‘Do not go beyond what is written.’ Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. 7For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
8Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have begun to reign – and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! 9For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honoured, we are dishonoured! 11To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world – right up to this moment.
Paul’s appeal and warning
14I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. 15Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
18Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?
Apóstoles de Cristo
1Que todos nos consideren servidores de Cristo, encargados de administrar los misterios de Dios. 2Ahora bien, a los que reciben un encargo se les exige que demuestren ser dignos de confianza. 3Por mi parte, muy poco me preocupa que me juzguen ustedes o cualquier tribunal humano; es más, ni siquiera me juzgo a mí mismo. 4Porque aunque la conciencia no me remuerde, no por eso quedo absuelto; el que me juzga es el Señor. 5Por lo tanto, no juzguen nada antes de tiempo; esperen hasta que venga el Señor. Él sacará a la luz lo que está oculto en la oscuridad y pondrá al descubierto las intenciones de cada corazón. Entonces cada uno recibirá de Dios la alabanza que le corresponda.
6Hermanos, todo esto lo he aplicado a Apolos y a mí mismo para beneficio de ustedes, con el fin de que aprendan de nosotros aquello de «no ir más allá de lo que está escrito». Así ninguno de ustedes podrá engreírse de haber favorecido al uno en perjuicio del otro. 7¿Quién te distingue de los demás? ¿Qué tienes que no hayas recibido? Y si lo recibiste, ¿por qué presumes como si no te lo hubieran dado?
8¡Ya tienen todo lo que desean! ¡Ya se han enriquecido! ¡Han llegado a ser reyes, y eso sin nosotros! ¡Ojalá fueran de veras reyes para que también nosotros reináramos con ustedes! 9Por lo que veo, a nosotros los apóstoles Dios nos ha hecho desfilar en el último lugar, como a los sentenciados a muerte. Hemos llegado a ser un espectáculo para todo el universo, tanto para los ángeles como para los hombres. 10¡Por causa de Cristo nosotros somos los ignorantes; ustedes en Cristo son los inteligentes! ¡Los débiles somos nosotros, los fuertes son ustedes! ¡A ustedes se les estima, a nosotros se nos desprecia! 11Hasta el momento pasamos hambre, tenemos sed, nos falta ropa, se nos maltrata, no tenemos lugar fijo dónde vivir. 12Con estas manos trabajamos duro. Si nos maldicen, bendecimos; si nos persiguen, lo soportamos; 13si nos calumnian, los tratamos con gentileza. Se nos considera la escoria de la tierra, la basura del mundo, y así hasta el día de hoy.
14No escribo esto para avergonzarlos, sino para amonestarlos, como a hijos míos amados. 15De hecho, aunque tuvieran ustedes miles de tutores en Cristo, padres sí que no tienen muchos, porque mediante el evangelio yo fui el padre que los engendró en Cristo Jesús. 16Por tanto, les ruego que sigan mi ejemplo. 17Con este propósito envié a Timoteo, mi amado y fiel hijo en el Señor. Él les recordará mi comportamiento en Cristo Jesús, como enseño por todas partes y en todas las iglesias.
18Ahora bien, algunos de ustedes se han vuelto arrogantes, pensando que no iré a verlos. 19Lo cierto es que, si el Señor quiere, iré a visitarlos muy pronto, y ya veremos no solo cómo hablan, sino cuánto poder tienen esos presumidos. 20Porque el reino de Dios no es cuestión de palabras, sino de poder. 21¿Qué prefieren? ¿Que vaya a verlos con un látigo, o con amor y humildad?
