Saul takes his life
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.
4Saul said to his armour-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.’
But his armour-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5When the armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. 6So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.
7When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They stripped him and took his head and his armour, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10They put his armour in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.
11When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
13Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14and did not enquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

1Filistenii s‑au luptat cu Israel, iar bărbații lui Israel au fugit dinaintea filistenilor și au căzut răpuși pe muntele Ghilboa. 2Filistenii i‑au urmărit pe Saul și pe fiii săi; i‑au ucis pe Ionatan, pe Abinadab și pe Malchi‑Șua, fiii lui Saul. 3Lupta devenise înverșunată în preajma lui Saul; arcașii l‑au țintit și l‑au rănit. 4Atunci Saul i‑a zis celui ce‑i ducea armele: „Scoate‑ți sabia și străpunge‑mă cu ea, ca nu cumva acești necircumciși să ajungă la mine și să mă batjocorească!“ Însă cel ce‑i ducea armele n‑a vrut să facă lucrul acesta pentru că s‑a temut. Atunci Saul și‑a luat sabia și s‑a aruncat în ea. 5Când cel ce‑i ducea armele a văzut că Saul a murit, s‑a aruncat și el în sabia lui și a murit. 6Astfel a murit Saul împreună cu cei trei fii ai lui și cu toată Casa lui. 7Toți oamenii lui Israel, care se aflau în vale, văzând că ceilalți au fugit și că Saul și fiii săi au murit, și‑au părăsit cetățile și au fugit și ei. Filistenii au venit și s‑au așezat în ele.
8În ziua următoare, când filistenii au venit să‑i jefuiască pe cei uciși, l‑au găsit pe Saul și pe fiii săi căzuți pe muntele Ghilboa. 9L‑au prădat pe Saul, i‑au luat capul și armele și au trimis mesageri pe tot cuprinsul țării filistenilor, ca să ducă vestea idolilor lor și poporului. 10I‑au pus armele în templul dumnezeilor lor, iar craniul i l‑au atârnat în templul lui Dagon10 Zeitate importantă la semiți (la akkadieni și la amoriți), venerat în mai multe centre (Ebla, Ugarit, Mari, Nippur, Isin); zeu al vegetației; mai târziu cunoaște o mare popularitate la filisteni.. 11Toți cei din Iabeșul Ghiladului au auzit tot ceea ce i‑au făcut lui Saul filistenii. 12Atunci toți războinicii viteji s‑au ridicat, au luat trupul lui Saul și trupurile fiilor săi și le‑au adus la Iabeș. Le‑au îngropat oasele sub un terebint în Iabeș și au postit timp de șapte zile.
13Saul a murit din cauza necredincioșiei lui. El a fost necredincios față de Domnul și nu a păzit Cuvântul Domnului. De asemenea, el a întrebat pe cineva care cheamă duhurile morților, cerând călăuzire 14și nu L‑a căutat pe Domnul. De aceea El l‑a omorât și i‑a dat domnia lui David, fiul lui Ișai.
