Justice and Mercy, Not Fasting
1In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev. 2The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat the Lord 3by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, “Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?”
4Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: 5“Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? 6And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves? 7Are these not the words the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were at rest and prosperous, and the Negev and the western foothills were settled?’ ”
8And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: 9“This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. 10Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’
11“But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. 12They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.
13“ ‘When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,’ says the Lord Almighty. 14‘I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it. This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.’ ”

1În cel de‑al patrulea an al împăratului Darius, Cuvântul Domnului i‑a vorbit lui Zaharia în ziua a patra a lunii a noua, luna Chislev1 7 decembrie 518 î.Cr.. 2Cei din Betel îi trimiseseră pe Sarețer și pe Reghem-Melek, împreună cu oamenii săi, ca să se roage Domnului 3și să‑i întrebe pe preoții din Casa Domnului Oștirilor și pe profeți: „Trebuie să plângem în luna a cincea3 Vezi nota de la 8:19. și să ne consacrăm la fel cum am făcut atâția ani?“
4Atunci Cuvântul Domnului Oștirilor mi‑a vorbit, zicând:
5„Vorbește întregului popor al țării și preoților astfel: «Când ați postit și ați jelit în lunile a cincea și a șaptea5 Vezi nota de la 8:19., în timpul acestor șaptezeci de ani, oare pentru Mine ați postit voi? 6Iar când mâncați și beți, oare nu pentru voi înșivă mâncați și beți? 7Nu sunt acestea cuvintele pe care le‑a vestit Domnul prin profeții cei dintâi, când Ierusalimul era locuit și în pace, alături de cetățile din jurul lui, iar Neghevul7 Ținutul pustiu din sudul Canaanului, între Beer-Șeba și Kadeș-Barnea. Termenul neghev este folosit adesea pentru a indica sudul, având acest sens în unele pasaje biblice. și zona deluroasă7 Ebr.: Șefela, zona cu dealuri joase, piemontană, situată între centrul muntos al Canaanului și țărmul Mediteranei. erau și ele locuite?»“
8Cuvântul Domnului i‑a vorbit lui Zaharia, zicând: 9„Așa vorbește Domnul Oștirilor: «Înfăptuiți judecată dreaptă și fiecare să arate bunătate și milă față de semenul său! 10Nu asupriți pe văduvă sau pe orfan, nici pe străin sau pe sărac și niciunul să nu gândească rău în inima lui împotriva fratelui său!»
11Dar ei au refuzat să asculte, și‑au întors umărul cu încăpățânare și și‑au astupat urechile ca să n‑audă! 12Și‑au făcut inima tare ca diamantul, ca să n‑asculte Legea și cuvintele pe care le trimitea Domnul Oștirilor prin Duhul Său, prin profeții cei dintâi. Și astfel a venit o mare mânie de la Domnul Oștirilor.
13Când Eu13 Lit.: El. am chemat, ei n‑au ascultat. Tot astfel, când ei au chemat, nici Eu n‑am ascultat, zice Domnul Oștirilor. 14I‑am împrăștiat ca o furtună printre toate neamurile pe care nu le cunoșteau, iar țara a fost pustiită în urma lor, așa că nimeni nu mai trecea sau se întorcea pe acolo. Și au prefăcut astfel țara cea plăcută într‑o pustietate.“
