A New Heaven and a New Earth
1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”21:1 Isaiah 65:17 for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’21:4 Isaiah 25:8 or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia21:16 That is, about 1,400 miles or about 2,200 kilometers in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits21:17 That is, about 200 feet or about 65 meters thick.21:17 Or high 18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.21:20 The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

新天新地
1それから私は、新しい天と新しい地とを見ました。そこには海はありません。今までの天も地も、消え去ってしまいました。 2また、私ヨハネは、神のもとを出て天から下って来る、聖なる都、新しいエルサレムに目を奪われました。その眺めのすばらしさは、まるで美しく着飾った花嫁のようでした。 3私は、王座から大声で叫ぶ声を聞きました。「ごらんなさい。神の住まいが人々の間にあります。神は人々と共に住み、人々は神の国民となります。神ご自身が人々の中に住み、 4その目から涙をぬぐってくださるのです。もはや、死も悲しみも叫びも苦痛もありません。それらはみな、永遠に姿を消したからです。」
5王座におられる方が宣言されました。「ごらんなさい。わたしはすべてを新しくします。」続いて言われました。「これらのことを書きとめなさい。わたしが伝えることは真実で、信頼できるからです。 6いっさいのわざが成し遂げられました。わたしは初めであり、終わりです。のどの渇いている者には、いのちの水の泉をあげましょう。 7勝利を得る人はだれでも、すべての祝福を相続できるのです。わたしはその人の神となり、その人はわたしの子どもとなります。 8しかし、わたしに従うのをやめるような臆病者、不忠実な者、堕落した者、人殺し、不道徳な者、魔術を行う者、偶像礼拝者、うそをつく者――このような者たちの行き着く先は、火と硫黄が燃えさかる池です。これが第二の死なのです。」
9その時、最後の七つの災害の鉢をぶちまけた、七人の天使の一人が来て、私に言いました。「ついて来なさい。小羊の妻となる花嫁を紹介しましょう。」
栄光の都
10幻の中で、天使は私を高い山の頂上に連れて行きました。そこで私は、すばらしい都、きよいエルサレムが神のもとを出て、天から下って来るのを見ました。 11都は神の栄光に包まれ、宝石のように光り輝き、碧玉のように〔水晶のように〕透き通っていました。 12都には、分厚い城壁が高くそびえ、十二人の天使が守る十二の門があり、それぞれに、イスラエルの十二部族の名が記されていました。 13また、門は東西南北の方角に、三つずつ設けられていました。 14城壁には十二の土台石があって、それぞれに、小羊の十二使徒の名が書き込まれていました。
15天使は、都と門と城壁とを測るために、金の物差しを手にしていました。 16実際に測ってみると、都は縦横長さの等しい正方形であることがわかりました。さらに高さも同じで、立方体をなしているのです。それぞれの長さは二千二百キロでした。
17次に城壁の厚さを測ってみると、六十五メートルありました。 18-19都は、ガラスのように透き通る純金でできていました。城壁は碧玉で、さまざまの宝石がちりばめてある、十二の土台石の上に築かれていました。第一の土台石は碧玉、第二はサファイヤ、第三は玉髄、第四はエメラルド、第五は赤縞めのう、 20第六は赤めのう、第七は貴かんらん石、第八は緑柱石、第九はトパーズ、第十は緑玉髄、第十一はヒヤシンス石、第十二は紫水晶です。 21十二の門は、それぞれ一つの大きな真珠でできていました。大通りは、ガラスのように透き通る純金でした。
22それにしても、都には、どこにも神殿が見あたらないのです。というのも、全能の神である主と小羊とを、都のどこででも、自由に礼拝できるからです。 23都には、太陽も月もいりません。神と小羊との栄光が、明るく照らしているからです。 24その光は全世界に及ぶのです。世界中の支配者たちが、それぞれの栄光を携えてやって来ます。
25都の門は決して閉じられず、一日中、開かれたままです。ここには夜がないからです。 26あらゆる国の栄光と誉れが、都に運ばれて来ます。 27汚れた者は入ることができません。偶像礼拝をする者、偽りを言う者は、一人たりとも入ることができません。小羊のいのちの書に名前が記されている人々だけが、ここに入ることができるのです。
