The Lamb and the 144,000
1Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. 5No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
The Three Angels
6Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
8A second angel followed and said, “ ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’14:8 Isaiah 21:9 which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”
9A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” 12This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.
13Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”
Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress
14I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man14:14 See Daniel 7:13. with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.
17Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.14:20 That is, about 180 miles or about 300 kilometers
L’Agneau et les cent quarante-quatre mille rachetés
1Alors je vis l’Agneau qui se tenait debout sur le mont Sion, et avec lui, les cent quarante-quatre mille qui portent son nom et le nom de son Père inscrits sur leur front. 2J’entendis une voix qui venait du ciel et qui résonnait comme de grandes eaux, comme le grondement d’un coup de tonnerre violent. C’était comme le son d’un orchestre de harpistes jouant de leurs instruments. 3Tous ces gens chantaient un cantique nouveau devant le trône, devant les quatre êtres vivants, et devant les représentants du peuple de Dieu. Et ce cantique, personne ne pouvait l’apprendre excepté les cent quarante-quatre mille, les rachetés de la terre.
4Ce sont ceux qui ne se sont pas souillés avec des femmes, ils sont restés vierges. Ils suivent l’Agneau partout où il va. Ils ont été rachetés d’entre les hommes pour être offerts comme des premiers fruits à Dieu et à l’Agneau. 5Il ne s’est pas trouvé de mensonge dans leur bouche. Ils sont irréprochables.
L’annonce du jugement et de la chute de Babylone
6Ensuite je vis un autre ange volant au zénith. Il avait un Evangile éternel à annoncer à tous les habitants de la terre, à toute nation, toute tribu, toute langue et tout peuple. 7Il criait d’une voix forte :
Craignez Dieu et donnez-lui gloire, car l’heure a sonné où il va rendre son jugement. Adorez donc celui qui a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer et les sources.
8Un second ange le suivit, disant :
Elle est tombée, la grande Babylone14.8 L’ancienne Babylone en Mésopotamie avait été la capitale politique, économique et religieuse d’un empire mondial ; c’est à Babylone que le peuple de Dieu de l’ancienne alliance a été mené en exil. est tombée, celle qui a fait boire à tous les peuples le vin de sa furieuse prostitution.
9Un troisième ange les suivit, proclamant d’une voix forte :
Celui qui adore la bête et son image et qui accepte de recevoir sa marque sur le front et sur la main, 10devra aussi boire du vin de la fureur de Dieu. Ce vin lui sera versé pur dans la coupe14.10 L’Ancien Testament représente souvent le jugement sous l’image d’une coupe donnée à boire (Ps 75.9 ; Es 51.17 ; Jr 25.15). de la colère divine, et il souffrira des tourments dans le feu et le soufre devant les saints anges et devant l’Agneau. 11La fumée de leur tourment s’élèvera à perpétuité. Quiconque adore la bête et son image, quiconque accepte la marque de son nom ne connaîtra aucun repos, ni de jour, ni de nuit.
12C’est là que les membres du peuple saint, ceux qui obéissent aux commandements de Dieu et vivent selon la foi14.12 Autre traduction : maintiennent leur foi. en Jésus, doivent faire preuve d’endurance.
13Puis j’entendis une voix venant du ciel me dire :
Ecris : Heureux, dès à présent, ceux qui meurent unis au Seigneur. Oui, dit l’Esprit, car ils se reposent de toute la peine qu’ils ont prise, et ils seront récompensés pour leurs œuvres.
La moisson et la vendange
14Alors je vis une nuée blanche sur laquelle siégeait quelqu’un qui ressemblait à un fils d’homme. Il avait sur la tête une couronne d’or et tenait à la main une faucille bien tranchante.
15Puis un autre ange sortit du Temple, criant d’une voix forte à celui qui siégeait sur la nuée :
Lance ta faucille et moissonne ! Car l’heure est venue de moissonner et la moisson de la terre est mûre.
16Celui qui siégeait sur la nuée lança sa faucille sur la terre, et la terre fut moissonnée.
17Un autre ange sortit du sanctuaire céleste, tenant lui aussi une faucille bien tranchante. 18Puis un autre ange encore, l’ange préposé au feu, quitta l’autel et cria d’une voix forte à celui qui tenait la faucille tranchante : Lance ta faucille tranchante et vendange les grappes de la vigne de la terre, car ses raisins sont mûrs.
19L’ange lança sa faucille sur la terre et vendangea la vigne de la terre. Il versa sa récolte dans le grand pressoir de la colère de Dieu. 20On écrasa les raisins dans le pressoir, hors de la ville. Le sang en sortit si abondamment qu’il atteignit la hauteur du mors des chevaux sur une étendue de mille six cents stades14.20 Voir 21.16 et note..
