1Do not envy the wicked,
do not desire their company;
2for their hearts plot violence,
and their lips talk about making trouble.

3By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
4through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures.

5The wise prevail through great power,
and those who have knowledge muster their strength.
6Surely you need guidance to wage war,
and victory is won through many advisers.

7Wisdom is too high for fools;
in the assembly at the gate they must not open their mouths.

8Whoever plots evil
will be known as a schemer.
9The schemes of folly are sin,
and people detest a mocker.

10If you falter in a time of trouble,
how small is your strength!
11Rescue those being led away to death;
hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
12If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?
Saying 26
13Eat honey, my son, for it is good;
honey from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14Know also that wisdom is like honey for you:
If you find it, there is a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.
Saying 27
15Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous,
do not plunder their dwelling place;
16for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again,
but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
Saying 28
17Do not gloat when your enemy falls;
when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
18or the Lord will see and disapprove
and turn his wrath away from them.
Saying 29
19Do not fret because of evildoers
or be envious of the wicked,
20for the evildoer has no future hope,
and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
Saying 30
21Fear the Lord and the king, my son,
and do not join with rebellious officials,
22for those two will send sudden destruction on them,
and who knows what calamities they can bring?
Further Sayings of the Wise
23These also are sayings of the wise:
To show partiality in judging is not good:
24Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,”
will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.
25But it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
and rich blessing will come on them.
26An honest answer
is like a kiss on the lips.
27Put your outdoor work in order
and get your fields ready;
after that, build your house.
28Do not testify against your neighbor without cause—
would you use your lips to mislead?
29Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me;
I’ll pay them back for what they did.”
30I went past the field of a sluggard,
past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;
31thorns had come up everywhere,
the ground was covered with weeds,
and the stone wall was in ruins.
32I applied my heart to what I observed
and learned a lesson from what I saw:
33A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
34and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.
1너는 악인들을 부러워하지 말고 그들과 함께 있는 것을 원하지도 말 아라.
2악인들은 남을 해칠 일만 생각하고 말썽을 일으킬 말만 한다.
3집은 지혜를 기초로 지어지고 총명으로 견고하게 되며
4그 방들은 지식을 통해서 여러 가지 진귀하고 아름다운 보물이 채워진다.
5지혜 있는 자가 힘 센 자보다 강하고 지식 있는 자가 무력을 쓰는 자보다 강하다.
6너는 전쟁하기에 앞서 전략을 잘 세워라. 승리는 전술적인 조언을 많이 받는 데 있다.
7지혜는 미련한 자들이 도달하기에는 너무 높은 수준에 있으므로 24:7 원문에는 ‘성문에서’중요한 문제가 토론될 때 그들은 아무것도 할 말이 없다.
8악한 일을 계획하는 사람을 흔히 24:8 또는 ‘사특한 자라고’음모가라고 부른다
9미련한 자의 책략은 죄이며 거만한 자는 사람들의 미움을 받는다.
10네가 어려움을 당할 때 낙심하면 너는 정말 약한 자이다.
11너는 억울하게 죽게 된 사람을 구하며 살인자의 손에 끌려가는 사람을 구출하는 데 주저하지 말아라.
12너는 알지 못했다는 이유로 네 책임을 회피하지 말아라. 네 마음을 살피시며 너를 지켜 보고 계시는 분이 어찌 그것을 모르겠느냐? 그는 사람이 행한 대로 갚아 주실 것이다.
13내 아들아, 꿀을 먹어라. 이것이 좋다. 특별히 송이꿀은 더 달다.
14이와 같이 지혜도 달콤한 것이다. 그러므로 지혜를 얻어라. 분명히 너에게 밝은 미래가 있을 것이며 너의 희망이 끊어지지 않을 것이다.
15악한 자여, 의로운 사람의 거처를 엿보지 말며 그 집을 약탈하지 말아라.
16의로운 사람은 일곱 번 넘어져도 다시 일어나지만 악인은 단 한 번의 재앙으로도 쓰러지고 만다.
17네 원수가 망하는 것을 보고 기뻐하거나 즐거워하지 말아라.
18여호와께서 그것을 보시고 기뻐하지 않으시며 분노를 그에게서 돌이키실지도 모른다.
19너는 악한 사람들 때문에 안달하거나 그들을 부러워하지 말아라.
20악인들에게는 밝은 미래가 없을 것이며 희망의 등불도 꺼질 것이다.
21내 아들아, 여호와와 왕을 두려워하고 반역자들과 사귀지 말아라.
22그들은 순식간에 패망할 것이다. 그들에게 내릴 재앙을 누가 알겠는가?
지혜로운 사람들의 교훈
23이것도 지혜로운 사람의 말이다: 재판할 때 사람 봐 가면서 하는 것은 좋지 못하다.
24죄 지은 사람에게 무죄를 선언하는 자는 온 세상 사람들에게 저주를 받고 미움을 살 것이지만
25그를 과감하게 책망하는 사람은 기쁨을 얻고 풍성한 복을 받을 것이다.
26정직한 대답은 입을 맞추는 것과 같다.
27너는 네 집을 짓기에 앞서 먼저 생활 기반부터 마련하여라.
28너는 이유 없이 네 이웃의 거짓 증인이 되어 허위 사실을 진술하지 말아라.
29그가 너에게 행한 대로 네가 앙갚음을 하겠다고 생각하지 말아라.
30내가 한때 게으른 자의 밭과 지혜 없는 사람의 포도원을 지나가다가
31온통 가시덤불이 덮여 있고 잡초가 무성하며 돌담이 무너져 있는 것을 보고
32깊이 생각하는 중에 이런 교훈을 얻었다.
33“좀더 자자. 좀더 졸자. 손을 모으고 좀더 쉬자” 하는 자에게는
34가난이 강도처럼 갑자기 밀어닥치고 빈곤이 군사처럼 몰려올 것이다.
