The Israelites Confess Their Sins
1On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads. 2Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors. 3They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God. 4Standing on the stairs of the Levites were Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani. They cried out with loud voices to the Lord their God. 5And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.9:5 Or God for ever and ever”
“Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. 6You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
7“You are the Lord God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and named him Abraham. 8You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.
9“You saw the suffering of our ancestors in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea.9:9 Or the Sea of Reeds 10You sent signs and wonders against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day. 11You divided the sea before them, so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters. 12By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.
13“You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good. 14You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses. 15In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.
16“But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands. 17They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them, 18even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, ‘This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,’ or when they committed awful blasphemies.
19“Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take. 20You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. 21For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.
22“You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon9:22 One Hebrew manuscript and Septuagint; most Hebrew manuscripts Sihon, that is, the country of the king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan. 23You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess. 24Their children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you gave the Canaanites into their hands, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased. 25They captured fortified cities and fertile land; they took possession of houses filled with all kinds of good things, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. They ate to the full and were well-nourished; they reveled in your great goodness.
26“But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law. They killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies. 27So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.
28“But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.
29“You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’ Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen. 30For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples. 31But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.
32“Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. 33In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly. 34Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our ancestors did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep. 35Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.
36“But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. 37Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.
The Agreement of the People
38“In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”9:38 In Hebrew texts this verse (9:38) is numbered 10:1.
Dân Chúng Xưng Nhận Tội Lỗi Mình
1Ngày hai mươi bốn tháng ấy, người Ít-ra-ên họp lại, kiêng ăn, mặc vải bố, bỏ bụi đất lên đầu. 2Sau khi đã phân ly với người ngoại giáo, họ đứng lên xưng tội của chính mình và của cha ông mình. 3Luật Đức Chúa Trời được đọc lớn tiếng suốt ba giờ. Sau đó, dân chúng xưng tội và thờ phụng Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời mình chừng ba giờ nữa. 4Có những người Lê-vi như Giê-sua, Ba-ni, Cát-mi-ên, Sê-ba-nia, Bun-ni, Sê-rê-bia, Bu-ni, và Kê-na-ni đứng trên một cái bệ, lớn tiếng kêu cầu Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của họ.
5Kế đến, tất cả lãnh đạo người Lê-vi là Giê-sua, Cát-mi-ên, Ba-ni, Ha-sáp-nia, Sê-rê-bia, Hô-đia, Sê-ba-nia, và Phê-ta-hia—kêu gọi dân: “Xin toàn dân đứng lên tôn vinh Chúa Hằng Hữu, là Đức Chúa Trời vĩnh hằng!” Họ cầu nguyện:
“Ngài đáng được tôn vinh, trổi vượt cả hơn mọi lời chúc tụng!
6Chỉ một mình Chúa là Chúa Hằng Hữu. Chúa sáng tạo vũ trụ, các tầng trời, thiên binh; đất và mọi vật trên đất; biển và mọi vật trong biển. Chúa bảo tồn tất cả. Các thiên binh tôn thờ Chúa.
7Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời Hằng Hữu, Đấng đã chọn Áp-ram, và đem người ra khỏi U-rơ xứ Canh-đê rồi đổi tên người ra Áp-ra-ham. 8Chúa thấy người trung thành với Ngài nên kết ước với người, hứa cho con cháu người đất của người Ca-na-an, Hê-tít, A-mô-rít, Phê-rết, Giê-bu, và Ghi-rê-ga. Chúa thực hiện lời hứa, vì Chúa là công chính.
9Chúa thông suốt nỗi khổ đau của các tổ phụ chúng con tại Ai Cập, nghe tiếng kêu la của họ bên Biển Đỏ. 10Chúa làm phép lạ giải cứu họ khỏi tay Pha-ra-ôn, quần thần và người Ai Cập, vì Chúa biết người Ai Cập cư xử với các tổ phụ cách bạo tàn ngang ngược. Cho đến bây giờ, thiên hạ vẫn còn khiếp sợ uy Danh Chúa. 11Chúa phân rẽ nước Biển Đỏ, cho họ đi qua lòng biển như đi trên đất khô. Quân thù đuổi theo họ thì bị Chúa ném vào biển sâu, như ném đá vào dòng nước lũ. 12Chúa dùng trụ mây dẫn họ ban ngày; trụ lửa soi đường trong đêm tối.
13Chúa giáng lâm tại Núi Si-nai, từ trời cao Chúa phán cùng họ, ban cho họ điều răn tốt lành, luật lệ chân thật, nghiêm minh. 14Luật lệ về ngày Sa-bát thánh cũng được Ngài công bố qua Môi-se, đầy tớ Ngài.
15Lúc họ đói, Chúa cho họ bánh từ trời; lúc họ khát, Chúa cho nước văng ra từ tảng đá. Chúa truyền bảo họ vào chiếm lấy đất Chúa thề cho họ.
16Nhưng tổ tiên chúng con kiêu căng, ương ngạnh, không tuân giữ điều răn Chúa. 17Họ không chịu vâng lời, cũng không lưu ý đến các phép lạ Chúa thực hiện ngay giữa họ; nhưng lại bướng bỉnh chọn người hướng dẫn mình quay về Ai Cập sống đời nô lệ. Tuy nhiên, Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời sẵn lòng thứ tha, đầy khoan dung, thương xót, chậm giận, và giàu lòng nhân từ; Chúa không từ bỏ họ. 18Ngay cả lúc họ làm tượng bò con rồi tuyên bố: ‘Đây là vị thần đã đem ta ra khỏi Ai Cập.’ Họ còn làm nhiều điều tội lỗi khác.
19Nhưng Chúa vẫn không bỏ họ trong nơi hoang mạc, vì lòng thương xót của Chúa vô bờ bến. Ban ngày, trụ mây vẫn dẫn lối; ban đêm, trụ lửa vẫn soi đường, không rời họ. 20Chúa cho Thần Linh Chân Thiện dạy dỗ họ, thay vì ngừng ban bánh ma-na và nước uống. 21Trong bốn mươi năm nơi hoang mạc, Chúa nuôi họ. Họ không thiếu thốn gì cả. Áo họ không sờn rách; chân họ không sưng phù.
22Rồi Chúa cho họ chiếm các vương quốc, thắng các dân tộc, phân chia đất cho họ ở từ đầu này đến góc nọ. Họ chiếm hữu đất của Si-hôn, vua Hết-bôn, của Óc, vua Ba-san. 23Chúa cho họ có con cháu đông như sao trời, rồi đem thế hệ mới này vào đất hứa.
24Chúa chinh phục các dân tộc địa phương, kể cả vua và người Ca-na-an, rồi giao nạp các dân tộc này cho họ để họ muốn đối xử thế nào mặc ý. 25Họ chiếm thành kiên cố, đất phì nhiêu, nhà có đầy vật dụng tốt đẹp, có sẵn giếng, vườn nho, vườn ô-liu và nhiều cây ăn quả khác. Họ ăn no nê, béo tốt, lòng hân hoan vì được Ngài ưu đãi.9:25 Nt hân hoan trong sự nhân từ lớn lao của Chúa
26Tuy thế, họ vẫn bất tuân lệnh Chúa, phản nghịch Ngài. Họ bỏ Luật Pháp Chúa,9:26 Nt thêm: ra sau lưng giết các tiên tri Ngài sai đến cảnh cáo để đem họ về với Chúa. Họ còn phạm nhiều tội lỗi khác. 27Vì vậy, Chúa để mặc kẻ thù làm cho họ khốn đốn. Trong lúc gian truân, họ kêu xin Chúa; và Chúa nghe họ. Với lòng thương xót vô biên, Chúa dùng những vị anh hùng đến giải cứu họ khỏi tay quân thù.
28Sau một thời gian hòa bình, họ lại phạm tội với Chúa. Chúa lại cho kẻ thù xâm chiếm đất họ. Thế mà, khi họ kêu cầu, từ trời cao Chúa nghe họ; và vì lòng nhân từ, Chúa giải cứu họ nhiều lần nữa.
29Chúa cảnh cáo họ vì muốn họ quay về với Luật Pháp Chúa như xưa; nhưng họ kiêu căng, bất tuân điều răn, luật lệ Chúa, là luật nếu ai vâng giữ, sẽ nhờ đó mà được sống. Họ cứng đầu, cứng cổ không chịu vâng lời. 30Trải bao năm tháng nhẫn nhục với họ, Chúa vẫn thường sai các vị tiên tri được Thần Linh cảm ứng đến cảnh cáo họ, nhưng họ khước từ. Vì thế, Chúa lại giao họ vào tay người ngoại quốc. 31Dù vậy, vì lòng thương xót vô biên, Chúa vẫn không tiêu diệt họ, không từ bỏ họ. Chúa thật nhân từ và đầy tình thương.
32Lạy Chúa—Đức Chúa Trời vĩ đại, uy dũng, đáng sợ; Đấng luôn giữ lời hứa, giàu tình thương—bây giờ xin đừng coi những sự hoạn nạn của chúng con là không đáng kể. Hoạn nạn đã xảy ra cho tất cả chúng con—từ nhà vua đến quan, từ thầy tế lễ, các vị tiên tri cho đến thường dân—từ đời tổ tiên chúng con, thời các vua A-sy-ri đến đánh phá, cho tới ngày nay. 33Các hoạn nạn Chúa dùng để trừng phạt chúng con đều đích đáng với tội ác chúng con, vì Chúa rất công bằng. 34Từ vua quan đến các thầy tế lễ và cha ông chúng con đều đã không tuân giữ Luật Chúa, cũng không nghe lời cảnh cáo. 35Sống trong đất nước phì nhiêu với những phước lành đầy dẫy, nhưng họ không chịu thờ Chúa, không chịu từ bỏ công việc tà ác mình.
36Thế nên, ngày nay chúng con làm nô lệ ngay trong miền đất màu mỡ Chúa cho cha ông chúng con để thụ hưởng. 37Ngày nay hoa màu của đất này về tay các vua ngoại quốc, là những người Chúa cho phép thống trị chúng con, vì chúng con có tội. Các vua này có quyền trên thân thể chúng con và súc vật chúng con; họ sử dụng tùy thích. Chúng con khổ nhục vô cùng.”
Dân Chúng Đồng Lòng Vâng Phục
38“Vì thế, chúng con một lần nữa xin cam kết phục vụ Chúa; xin viết giao ước này trên giấy trắng mực đen với ấn chứng của các nhà cầm quyền, người Lê-vi, và các thầy tế lễ của chúng con.”
