Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem
1In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, 2so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
I was very much afraid, 3but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
4The king said to me, “What is it you want?”
Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”
6Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time.
7I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? 8And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests. 9So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.
10When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.
Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls
11I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days 12I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.
13By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal2:13 Or Serpent or Fig Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. 14Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; 15so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. 16The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.
17Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.
They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
19But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”
20I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.”

1-2それから四か月ほどたった第七の月のある日、私が王にぶどう酒をついでいると、王が私に話しかけました。「浮かない顔をしているが、具合でも悪いのか。何か大きな悩みでもあるのか。」
私はその時まで、王の前ではいつも明るく振る舞うようにしていました。私はとても怖くなりましたが、こう答えました。 3「王様、どうして悲しまずにいられましょう。先祖たちの眠る町が廃墟となり、門も焼け落ちたままなのです。」 4-5「そうか。では何をしてやればよいのか。」私は短く天の神に祈ってから答えました。「もし、王様のお心にかなって、お許しいただけますなら、私をユダに遣わし、先祖たちの町を再建させてください。」 6「どのくらいかかるのだ。いつ戻って来るのか。」王は私に尋ねました。王のかたわらには王妃が座っていました。王が承諾してくれたので、私はさっそく出発の日取りを決めました。
7このほかにも、私は王に願い事を申し出ました。「もしよろしければ、ユーフラテス以西の総督あてに手紙を書いて、ユダに行く途中、それぞれの総督が治める地方を通らせてくれるよう、お命じになってください。 8また、王室の森林管理人アサフに手紙を書いて、材木を提供するようお命じになってください。神殿付近の城門の梁と、城壁と、私の住まいを建てるために必要なのです。」神の深いお恵みのおかげで、願いはかなえられました。
9ユーフラテス川西部の地方に着くと、私は総督たちに王の手紙を渡しました。王が私に警護の将校と騎兵をつけてくれていたことも言っておかなければなりません。 10ところが、私がユーフラテス川の西の地方に来たことを知り、腹を立てた人物がいました。ホロン人サヌバラテと、アモン人の役人トビヤです。この二人は、イスラエルに手を貸そうとする者の存在が許せなかったのです。
城壁の視察
11-12エルサレムに着いて三日後の夜、私はほんの数人だけを連れて、こっそり外に出ました。神が私の心に示してくれたエルサレムに関する計画のことは、誰にも話していなかったからです。私はろばに乗り、ほかの者は徒歩で進みました。 13谷の門を通り、竜の泉に向かい、糞の門まで行き、崩れた城壁、焼け落ちた門を調べました。 14-15次いで、泉の門と王の池へ向かいましたが、瓦礫のせいで、ろばの通れる場所がありませんでした。そこで、町の回りを巡り、流れに沿って進み、城壁を調べて、再び谷の門から中に入りました。 16町の役人たちは、私が出かけたことはもちろん、私のしようとしていることも知りませんでした。この計画のことは、政府や宗教関係の要人にも、実際の工事に当たる人々にも、まだ話していなかったのです。
17しかし、時が来たので、私は人々に呼びかけました。「この町はごらんのとおりの惨状です。荒れ果てたまま、門も焼け落ちたままです。さあ、エルサレムの城壁を再建しようではありませんか。この恥ずべき事態を解決しましょう。」 18私は、神が抱かせてくれた願いや、王との話し合い、そして王が許可してくれた計画について話しました。人々はすぐに反応してくれました。「それはよかった。さあ、城壁を建て直しましょう。」こうして、工事が始まったのです。 19ところが、この話を耳にしたサヌバラテやトビヤ、アラブ人ゲシェムたちは、あざ笑って言いました。「やれやれ、いったい何をしようというのだ。王に反逆するつもりか。」
20しかし、私は答えました。「天の神様がお助けくださいます。神様にお従いしている私たちは、必ずこの城壁を再建することができるでしょう。あなたがたには関係のないことです。」
