Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”
3He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’12:7 Hosea 6:6 you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
11He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
God’s Chosen Servant
15Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16He warned them not to tell others about him. 17This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18“Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21In his name the nations will put their hope.”12:21 Isaiah 42:1-4
Jesus and Beelzebul
22Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”
24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”
25Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29“Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
30“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
33“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The Sign of Jonah
38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
46While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

安息日をも支配するイエス
1そのころのことです。イエスは弟子たちといっしょに、麦畑の中を歩いておられました。ちょうど、ユダヤの礼拝日にあたる安息日（神の定めた休息日）でしたが、お腹がすいた弟子たちは、麦の穂を摘み取って食べ始めました。
2ところが、それを見た、あるパリサイ人たちが言いました。「あなたの弟子たちがおきてを破っている。安息日に刈り入れをするなど、もってのほかだ。」
3しかし、イエスは言われました。「ダビデ王とその家来たちが空腹になった時、どんなことをしたか、聖書で読んだことがないのですか。 4ダビデ王は神殿に入り、祭司しか食べられない供え物のパンを、みんなで食べたではないですか。ダビデ王でさえ、おきてを破ったわけです。 5また、神殿で奉仕をする祭司は安息日に働いてもよい、と聖書に書いてあるのを読んだことがないのですか。 6ことわっておきますが、このわたしは、神殿よりもずっと偉大なのです。 7もしあなたがたが、『わたしは供え物を受けるより、あなたがたにあわれみ深くなってほしい』（ホセア6・6）という聖書のことばをよく理解していたら、罪もない人たちをとがめたりはしなかったはずです。 8安息日といえども、天から来たわたしの支配下にあるのですから。」
9このあと、イエスは会堂にお入りになりました。 10ふとごらんになると、そこに、片手の不自由な男がいました。ここぞとばかり、パリサイ人たちは、「安息日に病気を治してやっても、おきてに違反しないでしょうか」と尋ねました。それは、イエスがきっと「さしつかえない」と答えるだろうから、そうしたら逮捕しようという計略でした。 11ところが、イエスの答えは違いました。「あなたがたが、羊を一匹飼っていたとします。ところが、その羊が安息日に井戸に落ちてしまった。さあ、どうしますか。もちろん、すぐに助けてあげるでしょう。 12人間の価値は、羊とは比べものになりません。だから安息日に良いことをするのは、正しいことなのです。」 13それからイエスは、片手の不自由な男に、「手を伸ばしなさい」と言われ、彼がそのとおりにすると、手はすっかりよくなりました。
14そこでパリサイ人たちは、どうにかしてイエスを逮捕し死刑にしようと、集まって陰謀を巡らしました。 15しかし、それに気づいたイエスは、いち早く会堂を抜け出しました。すると、大ぜいの人がついて来たので、その中の病人をみないやし、 16そして彼らに、この奇跡のうわさを言い広めないように注意しました。 17こうして、イザヤの預言のとおりになったのです。
18「わたしのしもべを見よ。
彼こそわたしの選んだ者。
わたしが喜ぶ、わたしの愛する者。
わたしは彼の上にわたしの霊を置き、
彼は国々をさばく。
19彼は争わず、
叫ぶことも大声をあげることもない。
20弱い者を踏み倒さず、
どんな小さな望みの火も消さない。
ついには、正義に勝利をもたらす。
21彼の名こそ、全世界の希望となる。」（イザヤ42・1―4）
22その時、悪霊につかれて、目も見えず、口もきけない人が連れて来られたので、イエスは彼の目を開け、口もきけるようになさいました。 23これを見た人々は驚いて、「やはり、この人がメシヤ（救い主）ではないだろうか」と言い合いました。
24しかし、このことを耳にしたパリサイ人たちは、「イエスが悪霊を追い出せるのは、自分が悪霊の王ベルゼブル（サタン）だからだ」とうそぶきました。
25イエスは彼らの考えを見抜き、こう言われました。「内紛の絶えない国は、結局滅びます。町でも家庭でも、分裂していては長続きしません。 26もしサタンがサタンを追い出すなら、自分で自分と戦い、自分の国を破壊することになるのです。 27わたしがベルゼブルの力で悪霊を追い出していると言うが、あなたがたの仲間も、悪霊を追い出しているではありませんか。彼らは、いったい何の力で追い出しているのですか。あなたがたの非難があたっているかどうか、彼らに答えてもらいましょう。 28ところで、もしわたしが神の霊によって悪霊を追い出しているとしたら、どうでしょう。神の国はもう、あなたがたのところに来ているのです。 29強い者の家に押し入って、物を盗み出すにはまず、その強い者を縛り上げなければなりません。悪霊も同じことです。まずサタンを縛り上げなければ、悪霊を追い出せるわけがありません。 30わたしに味方しない者はみな、わたしの敵なのです。
31-32だから、あなたがたに言っておきます。どんなにわたしを悪く言おうと、またどんな罪を犯そうと、神は赦してくださいます。ただ一つ、聖霊を汚すことだけは例外です。この罪ばかりは、いつの世でも絶対に赦されることはありません。
33木の良し悪しは、実で見分けます。良い品種は良い実をつけ、劣った品種は悪い実をつけるものです。 34ああ、まむしの子らよ。あなたがたのような悪者の口から、どうして正しい、良いことばが出てくるでしょう。人の心の思いが、そのまま口から出てくるのですから。 35良い人のことばを聞けば、その人の心の中にすばらしい宝がたくわえられていることがわかります。しかし、悪い人の心の中は悪意でいっぱいです。 36言っておきますが、やがてさばきの日には、あなたがたは今まで口にしたむだ口を、一つ一つ釈明しなければならないのです。 37あなたがたのことばしだいで、あなたがたの将来は決まります。自分のことばによって、正しい者とされるか、あるいは罪に定められるか、どちらかになるのです。」
証拠を求める人々
38ある日、ユダヤ人の指導者とパリサイ人のうちの何人かがやって来て、「あなたがほんとうにメシヤなら、その証拠を見せてほしい」と頼みました。
39しかしイエスは、お答えになりました。「邪悪な不信の時代の人々は、証拠を要求するのです。けれども、預言者ヨナに起こったこと以外は、何の証拠も与えられません。 40つまり、ヨナが三日三晩大きな魚の腹の中で過ごしたように、メシヤのわたしも、三日三晩、地の中で過ごすからです。 41さばきの日には、あのニネベの人々が、あなたがたをきびしく罰する側に立つでしょう。ニネベの人々はヨナの教えを聞いて、それまでの堕落した生活を悔い改め、神に立ち返ったからです。ところが、今ここに、ヨナよりもはるかにまさる者が立っているのに、あなたがたはその人を信じようとしません。 42シェバの女王でさえ、あなたがたをきびしく罰する側に回るでしょう。彼女は、ソロモンから知恵のことばを聞こうと、あんなに遠い国から旅して来ることもいとわなかったのです。ここに、そのソロモンよりまさる偉大な者がいるのに、あなたがたは信じようとしません。
43この邪悪な時代に生きる人たちは、ちょうど悪霊につかれた人のようです。せっかくその人から悪霊が出て行っても、しばらくの間、悪霊は別の住みかを求めて荒野をあちこち歩き回るだけです。結局、適当な場所が見つからないので、 44『もとの家に帰ろう』と帰ってみると、その人の心はきれいに片づけてあり、しかも空っぽです。 45そこで、しめたとばかり、もっとたちの悪い七つの霊を連れ込んで、住みついてしまうというわけです。こうなると、その人の状態は以前より、はるかに悲惨なものとなります。」
46イエスが人々のひしめき合う家の中で話しておられた時、母と弟たちがやって来ました。イエスに話したいことがあったからです。 47だれかが、「先生。お母様と弟さんたちがお見えです」と知らせると、 48イエスはみんなを見回して、「わたしの母や兄弟とは、いったいだれのことですか」と言われました。 49そして弟子たちを指さし、「ごらんなさい。この人たちこそわたしの母であり兄弟です。 50天におられるわたしの父に従う人はだれでも、わたしの母であり、兄弟であり、姉妹なのです」と言われました。
