Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ”
4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!11:9 A Hebrew expression meaning “Save!” which became an exclamation of praise; also in verse 10”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”11:9 Psalm 118:25,26
10“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts
12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’11:17 Isaiah 56:7? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’11:17 Jer. 7:11”
18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples11:19 Some early manuscripts came, Jesus went out of the city.
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23“Truly11:22,23 Some early manuscripts “If you have faith in God,” Jesus answered, 23 “truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” 2611:26 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 6:15.
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
27They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
33So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
Jesus rider in i Jerusalem på en åsna
(Matt 21:1-9; Luk 19:28-38; Joh 12:12-15)
1När de närmade sig Jerusalem och kom till Betfage och Betania, som låg vid Olivberget, skickade Jesus iväg två av sina lärjungar 2och sa till dem: ”Gå till byn som ligger framför er. Där inne kommer ni genast att hitta en ungåsna stå bunden, en som ingen har ridit på ännu. Ta den och led hit den. 3Och om någon frågar vad ni håller på med så säg bara: ’Herren behöver den, men han kommer snart att lämna den tillbaka.’ ”
4De gav sig då iväg och hittade en ungåsna som stod bunden vid en port på bygatan. Och medan de höll på att lösgöra den, 5sa några som stod där: ”Vad gör ni? Tar ni åsnan?” 6Men de svarade som Jesus hade sagt, och då lät man dem gå.
7De ledde sedan åsnan till Jesus, lade sina mantlar på den, och Jesus satte sig på den. 8Många bredde ut sina mantlar på vägen, och andra strödde ut gröna kvistar från träden runt omkring.11:8 Åsnan var en symbol för att Jesus tillhörde kung Davids ätt, och genom att han red på en åsna gick det i uppfyllelse som förutsagts i Sak 9:9. Mantlarna var en kunglig hyllning. 9Och både de som gick framför Jesus och de som gick efter ropade:
”Hosianna!
Välsignad är han som kommer i Herrens namn!11:9 Hosianna är ett hebreiskt hyllningsord som betyder Herre, fräls oss! Se vidare not till Matt 21:9.
10Välsignat är vår fader Davids kommande rike!
Hosianna i höjden!”
11Så red han in i Jerusalem och gick till templet. Där såg han på allt, men eftersom det redan var sent gick han därifrån till Betania med de tolv.
Jesus rensar templet
(Matt 21:18-22)
12Nästa morgon, när de var på väg från Betania, blev Jesus hungrig. 13Då fick han se att det lite längre bort fanns ett fikonträd med gröna blad, och han gick dit för att se om det fanns någon frukt på det. Men när han kom dit fann han bara blad. Fikonens tid var nämligen inte inne.11:13 Jfr Matt 21:19 med not. 14Då sa Jesus till trädet: ”Aldrig mer i evighet ska någon äta frukt från dig!” Och hans lärjungar hörde det.
Templet rensas
(Matt 21:12-16; Luk 19:45-47; Joh 2:13-16)
15När de kom fram till Jerusalem gick han in i templet och drev ut köpmännen och deras kunder. Han välte omkull borden för dem som växlade pengar och stånden för dem som sålde duvor, 16och han stoppade alla som försökte bära varor över tempelplatsen.11:16 Köpmännen sålde djur som skulle användas till offer i templet.
17Sedan undervisade han dem och sa: ”Står det inte skrivet: ’Mitt hus ska kallas ett bönehus för alla folk?’ Men ni har gjort det till ett rövarnäste.”11:17 Se Jes 56:7 och Jer 7:11.
18När översteprästerna och de skriftlärda fick höra detta, började de göra upp planer på hur de skulle bli av med honom. Men de var rädda för honom, eftersom alla människor var så imponerade av hans undervisning.
19På kvällen lämnade sedan Jesus och hans lärjungar staden.
Jesus förklarar att hans lärjungar kan be om stora ting
(Matt 21:20-22; 6:14)
20När de nästa morgon gick förbi fikonträdet igen, såg de att det hade vissnat ända från roten. 21Då kom Petrus ihåg det och sa: ”Rabbi11:21 Se not till 9:5., har du sett? Fikonträdet som du förbannade har vissnat!”
22Då sa Jesus till dem: ”Ni måste tro på Gud. 23Sannerligen säger jag er: om någon säger till det här berget: ’Upp med dig och kasta dig i havet!’ och inte tvivlar i sitt hjärta utan tror att det ska ske som han säger, då kommer det att bli så. 24Jag säger er därför att vad ni än ber om i er bön i tron att ni får det, så ska ni få det. 25Men när ni står och ber till Gud ska ni först förlåta dem ni har något emot. Då ska också er Fader i himlen förlåta er era överträdelser.11:25 En del handskrifter har med en extra vers 26 Men om ni inte förlåter, kommer er Fader i himlen inte att förlåta er era överträdelser. Jfr Matt 6:15.”
De judiska ledarna ifrågasätter Jesus fullmakt
(Matt 21:23-27; Luk 20:1-8)
27Så kom de tillbaka till Jerusalem, och medan Jesus gick omkring i templet kom översteprästerna och de skriftlärda och folkets ledare fram till honom. 28De frågade honom: ”Vad har du för fullmakt att göra detta? Vem har gett dig den fullmakten att göra det?”
29Jesus sa: ”Jag vill också ställa en fråga till er. Om ni svarar på den ska jag tala om för er vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta. 30Var Johannes dop från himlen eller från människorna? Svara mig!”
31De började genast diskutera med varandra och sa: ”Om vi säger att det var från himlen, så kommer han att fråga varför vi inte trodde på honom. 32Men kan vi säga att det var från människor?” Det vågade de inte för folket, eftersom alla ansåg att Johannes faktiskt var en profet. 33Därför svarade de till slut: ”Vi vet inte.”
Då sa Jesus till dem: ”I så fall säger inte jag heller vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta.”
