The Faith of the Centurion
1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
11Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Jesus and John the Baptist
18John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’ ”
21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy7:22 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is the one about whom it is written:
“ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’7:27 Mal. 3:1
28I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“ ‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman
36When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,7:41 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day laborer (see Matt. 20:2). and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
ايمان عجيب يک افسر رومی
1هنگامی كه عيسی اين سخنان را به پايان رسانيد، به كفرناحوم بازگشت.
2در آن شهر، يک افسر رومی، غلامی داشت كه برايش خيلی عزيز بود. از قضا آن غلام بيمار شد و به حال مرگ افتاد. 3وقتی افسر از آمدن عيسی باخبر شد، چند نفر از بزرگان يهود را فرستاد تا از او خواهش كنند كه بيايد و غلامش را شفا بخشد. 4پس آنان با اصرار، به عيسی التماس كردند كه همراه ايشان برود و آن غلام را شفا دهد. ايشان گفتند: «اين افسر مرد بسيار نيكوكاری است. اگر كسی پيدا شود كه لايق لطف تو باشد، همين شخص است. 5زيرا نسبت به يهوديان مهربان بوده و عبادتگاهی نيز برای ما ساخته است!»
6عيسی با ايشان رفت. اما پيش از آنكه به خانه برسند، آن افسر چند نفر از دوستان خود را فرستاد تا به عيسی چنين بگويند: «سَروَر من، به خود زحمت ندهيد كه به خانه من بياييد، چون من لايق چنين افتخاری نيستم. 7خود را نيز لايق نمیدانم كه به حضورتان بيايم. از همانجا كه هستيد، فقط دستور بدهيد تا غلام من شفا يابد! 8من خود، زير دست افسران ارشد هستم و از طرف ديگر، سربازانی را تحت فرمان خود دارم. فقط كافی است به سربازی دستور بدهم ”برو“ تا برود. يا بگويم ”بيا“ تا بيايد، و به غلام خود بگويم ”چنين و چنان كن“ تا بكند. پس شما نيز فقط دستور بدهيد تا خدمتگزار من بهبود يابد!»
9عيسی وقتی اين را شنيد، تعجب كرد و رو به جمعيتی كه همراهش بودند، نمود و گفت: «در ميان تمام يهوديان اسرائيل، حتی يک نفر را نديدهام كه چنين ايمانی داشته باشد.» 10وقتی دوستان آن افسر به خانه بازگشتند، غلام كاملاً شفا يافته بود.
عيسی مردهای را زنده میكند
11چندی بعد، عيسی با شاگردان خود به شهری به نام نائين رفت و مانند هميشه، گروه بزرگی از مردم نيز همراه او بودند. 12وقتی به دروازه شهر رسيدند، ديدند كه جنازهای را میبرند. جوانی كه تنها پسر يک بيوهزن بود، مرده بود. بسياری از اهالی آن شهر، با آن زن عزاداری میكردند.
13وقتی عيسای خداوند، آن مادر داغديده را ديد، دلش به حال او سوخت و فرمود: «گريه نكن!» 14سپس نزديک تابوت رفت و دست بر آن گذارد. كسانی كه تابوت را میبردند، ايستادند. عيسی فرمود: «ای جوان، به تو میگويم، برخيز!»
15بلافاصله، آن جوان برخاست و نشست و با كسانی كه دور او را گرفته بودند، مشغول گفتگو شد! به اين ترتيب، عيسی او را به مادرش بازگردانيد.
16تمام كسانی كه اين معجزه را ديدند، با ترس و احترام، خدا را شكر كرده، میگفتند: «نبی بزرگی در ميان ما ظهور كرده است! خداوند به ياری ما آمده است!» 17آنگاه خبر اين معجزه در سراسر ايالت يهوديه و در سرزمينهای اطراف منتشر شد.
پيغام عيسی به يحيی
18هنگامی كه يحيی خبر كارهای عيسی را از زبان شاگردان خود شنيد، 19دو نفر از ايشان را نزد او فرستاد تا بپرسند: «آيا تو همان مسيح موعود هستی يا هنوز بايد منتظر آمدن او باشيم؟»
20-22آن دو شاگرد هنگامی نزد عيسی رسيدند كه او افليجها، كورها و بيماران مختلف را شفا میبخشيد و ارواح پليد را از وجود ديوانگان اخراج میكرد. آنان سؤال يحيی را به عرض او رساندند. عيسی در جواب فرمود: «نزد يحيی بازگرديد و آنچه ديديد و شنيديد، برای او بيان كنيد كه چگونه نابينايان بينا میشوند، لنگان راه میروند، جذامیان شفا میيابند، ناشنوایان شنوا میگردند، مردگان زنده میشوند و فقرا پيغام نجاتبخش خدا را میشنوند. 23سپس به او بگوييد، خوشا به حال كسی كه به من شک نكند.»
24وقتی آن دو فرستاده رفتند، عيسی درباره يحيی با مردم سخن گفت و فرمود: «آن مرد كه برای ديدنش به بيابان يهوديه رفته بوديد، كه بود؟ آيا مردی بود سست چون علف، كه از وزش هر بادی بلرزد؟ 25آيا مردی بود با لباسهای گرانبها؟ اگر شخص عياش و خوشگذرانی بود، در قصرها زندگی میكرد، نه در بيابان! 26آيا رفته بوديد پيامبری را ببينيد؟ بلی، به شما میگويم كه يحيی از يک پيامبر نيز بزرگتر است. 27او همان رسولی است كه كتاب آسمانی دربارهاش میفرمايد: ”من رسول خود را پيش از تو میفرستم تا راه را برايت باز كند.“ 28در ميان تمام انسانهايی كه تا به حال به دنیا آمدهاند، كسی بزرگتر از يحيی نبوده است. با وجود اين، كوچكترين فرد در ملكوت خدا از يحيی بزرگتر است!
29«تمام كسانی كه پيغام يحيی را شنيدند، حتی مأمورين باج و خراج، تسليم خواست خدا گرديده، از دست او غسل تعميد گرفتند. 30ولی فريسیها و علمای دين، دعوت خدا را رد كردند و حاضر نشدند از او تعميد بگيرند.
31«پس درباره اين قبيل اشخاص چه بگويم؟ ايشان را به چه چيز تشبيه كنم؟ 32مانند كودكانی هستند كه در كوچهها به هنگام بازی، با بیحوصلگی به همبازيهای خود میگويند: ”نه به ساز ما میرقصيد، و نه به نوحهٔ ما گريه میكنيد.“ 33زيرا درباره يحيای تعميددهنده كه اغلب روزهدار بود و شراب هم نمینوشيد، میگفتيد كه ديوانه است! 34و درباره من كه میخورم و مینوشم، میگوييد كه شخصی است پرخور و ميگسار و همنشين گناهكاران! 35اگر عاقل بوديد، چنين نمیگفتيد و میدانستيد چرا او چنان میكرد و من چنين!»
زن بدكاره آمرزيده میشود
36روزی يكی از فريسيان عيسی را برای صرف غذا به خانه خود دعوت كرد. عيسی نيز دعوت او را پذيرفت و به خانه او رفت. وقتی سر سفره نشسته بودند، 37زنی بدكاره كه شنيده بود عيسی در آن خانه است، شيشهای نفيس پر از عطر گرانبها برداشت، 38و وارد شد و پشت سر عيسی، نزد پايهايش نشست و شروع به گريستن كرد. قطرههای اشک او روی پايهای عيسی میچكيد و او با گیسوانش آنها را پاک میكرد. سپس پاهای عيسی را بوسيد و روی آنها عطر ريخت.
39صاحب خانه يعنی آن فريسی، وقتی اين وضع را مشاهده نمود و آن زن را شناخت، با خود گفت: «اگر اين مرد فرستاده خدا بود، يقيناً متوجه میشد كه اين زن گناهكار و ناپاک است!»
40عيسی خيالات دل او را درک كرد و به او گفت: «شمعون، میخواهم چيزی به تو بگويم.»
شمعون گفت: «بفرما استاد!»
41آنگاه عيسی داستانی برای او تعريف كرد و گفت: «شخصی از دو نفر طلب داشت، از يكی ۵۰۰ سكه و از ديگری ۵۰ سكه. 42اما هيچيک از آن دو، نمیتوانست بدهی خود را بپردازد. پس آن مرد مهربان هر دو را بخشيد و از طلب خود چشمپوشی كرد! حال، به نظر تو كدام يک از آن دو او را بيشتر دوست خواهد داشت؟»
43شمعون جواب داد: «به نظر من، آن كه بيشتر بدهكار بود.»
عيسی فرمود: «درست گفتی!»
44سپس به آن زن اشاره كرد و به شمعون گفت: «به اين زن كه اينجا زانو زده است خوب نگاه كن! وقتی به خانهٔ تو آمدم به خودت زحمت ندادی كه برای شستشوی پايهايم، آب بياوری. اما او پايهای مرا با اشک چشمانش شست و با مويهای سرش خشک كرد. 45به رسم معمول، صورتم را نبوسيدی؛ اما از وقتی كه داخل شدم، اين زن از بوسيدن پايهای من دست نكشيده است. 46تو غفلت كردی كه به رسم احترام، روغن بر سرم بمالی، ولی او پايهای مرا عطرآگين كرده است. 47از اينروست كه او محبت بيشتری نشان میدهد، چون گناهان بسيارش آمرزيده شده است. اما هر كه كمتر بخشيده شده باشد، محبت كمتری نشان میدهد.»
48آنگاه رو به آن زن كرد و فرمود: «گناهان تو بخشيده شد!»
49اشخاصی كه بر سر سفره حضور داشتند، با خود میگفتند: «اين مرد كيست كه گناهان مردم را نيز میآمرزد؟»
50عيسی به آن زن فرمود: «ايمانت باعث نجاتت شده است! برخيز و آسودهخاطر برو.»
