1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”
3So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
5But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”
6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends—before this they had been enemies.
13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.” 1723:17 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 27:15 and Mark 15:6.
18But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” 19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
23But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
26As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30Then
“ ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’23:30 Hosea 10:8
31For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”23:34 Some early manuscripts do not have this sentence. And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.23:42 Some manuscripts come with your kingly power”
43Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
The Death of Jesus
44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”23:46 Psalm 31:5 When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus
50Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

1衆議一決し、全議員がそろって、イエスを総督ピラトのもとに連れて行きました。 2そして口々に訴えました。「この男は、ローマ政府に税金を納めるなとか、自分こそメシヤだの、王だのと言って、国民を惑わした不届き者です。」 3ピラトはイエスに問いただしました。「ほんとうに、おまえはユダヤ人のメシヤで、王なのか。」「そのとおりです。」 4ピラトは祭司長や群衆のほうを向き、「この男には何の罪もないではないか」と言いました。 5これを聞いて人々は、必死になって叫びました。「この男はガリラヤからエルサレムまで、ユダヤ全国で民衆をたきつけ、暴動を起こそうとしたんですよ！」 6そこでピラトは、「では、この男はガリラヤ人なのか」と尋ね、 7人々がそうだと答えると、イエスをヘロデ王（ヘロデ・アンテパス）のもとへ連行するように命じました。ガリラヤはヘロデの支配下にあり、その時ヘロデは、ちょうどエルサレムに滞在中だったからです。
8イエスに会えて、ヘロデは大喜びでした。前々からイエスのうわさを耳にし、一度、イエスが行う奇跡を見てみたいと思っていたのです。 9ヘロデはイエスを前にして、次から次へと質問をあびせました。ところがイエスは口をつぐみ、何一つ答えません。 10祭司長や他の宗教的指導者たちは、そばに立ち、激しい口調でイエスを訴えました。 11ヘロデと部下の兵士たちは、さんざんイエスをばかにし、あざけったあげく、王が着るようなガウンを着せて、ピラトのもとに送り返しました。 12それまで敵対していたヘロデとピラトがたいそう親しくなったのは、この日からです。
13ピラトは、祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たち、それに民衆もみないっしょに呼び出し、 14判決を言い渡しました。「おまえたちは、この男を、ローマ政府への反乱を指導したかどで訴えた。それでくわしく調べてみたが、そのような容疑事実はない。この男は無罪だ。 15ヘロデも同じ結論に達し、私のもとに送り返してきた。この男は死刑にあたるようなことは何もしていない。 16だから、むちで打ってから釈放しようと思う。」
17-18しかし、人々はいっせいに叫び立てました。「そいつを殺せ！ バラバを釈放しろ！」 19バラバとは、エルサレムで政府転覆を図った罪と殺人罪とで投獄されていた男でした。 20ピラトは、なんとかしてイエスを釈放しようと、なおも群衆を説得しましたが、 21彼らは聞き入れません。「十字架だ！ 十字架につけろ！」と叫び続けるばかりです。 22ピラトは、三度も念を押しました。「どうしてだ。この男がどんな悪事を働いたというのか。死刑を宣告する理由など見つからん。だから、むち打ってから釈放してやるつもりだ。」 23それでも騒ぎはおさまりません。ますます大声で、イエスを十字架につけろと要求する群衆の声に、ついにピラトも負けてしまいました。 24しかたなく彼らの要求どおりに、イエスに死刑を宣告し、 25反逆罪と殺人罪で投獄されていたバラバを釈放しました。一方、イエスのほうは、すぐに人々の手に渡し、彼らの好きなようにさせました。
26人々は、イエスを刑場に引いて行く途中、田舎からエルサレムに着いたばかりの、シモンというクレネ人にむりやり十字架を背負わせ、イエスのうしろから運ばせました。
27大ぜいの民衆や、イエスのことを悲しむ女たちがあとからついて行きます。 28イエスは女たちのほうをふり向き、とぎれとぎれに言われました。「エルサレムの娘たちよ。わたしのために泣いてはならない。自分と、自分の子どもたちのために泣きなさい。 29なぜなら、子どもを持たない女のほうが幸いと思う日が、すぐにでも来るのです。 30その時、人々は山に向かって、『私たちの上に倒れて、押しつぶしてくれ！』と叫び、丘に向かって、『私たちを埋めてくれ！』と頼むでしょう。 31生木のわたしさえ、こんな目に会うとしたら、枯れ木同然の人たちには、いったい、どんなことが起こるでしょう。」
イエスの十字架の死と埋葬
32-33イエスだけでなく、ほかに二人の犯罪人が、「どくろ」と呼ばれる場所で処刑されるために、引いて行かれました。刑場に着くと、三人は十字架につけられました。イエスが真ん中に、二人はその両側に。 34その時、イエスはこう言われました。「父よ。彼らをお赦しください。彼らは、自分たちが何をしているのかわかっていないのです。」兵士たちがさいころを投げて、イエスの着物を分け合うのを、 35民衆はそばに立ってながめていました。一方、ユダヤ人の指導者たちもイエスをあざけり、「他人ばかり助けて、このざまは何だ。ほんとうに神に選ばれたメシヤなら、自分を救ってみろ！」と言いました。 36兵士たちは、酸っぱいぶどう酒を差し出しながら、 37「ユダヤ人の王様なら、自分を救ったらどうだ！」とからかいました。 38十字架のイエスの頭上には、「これはユダヤ人の王」と書いた罪状書きが掲げてありました。
39イエスの横で十字架につけられていた犯罪人の一人が、「あんたはメシヤなんだってなあ。だったら、自分とおれたちを救ってもよさそうなもんだ。どうなんだ」とののしりました。 40-41しかし、もう一人の犯罪人は、それをたしなめました。「この期に及んで、まだ神を恐れないのか！ おれたちは悪事を働いたんだから、報いを受けるのはあたりまえだ。だが、このお方は悪いことは何もしなかったのだ。」 42そして、イエスにこう頼みました。「イエス様。御国に入る時、どうぞ私を思い出してください。」 43イエスはお答えになりました。「あなたは今日、わたしといっしょにパラダイス（天国）に入ります。」
44その時です。正午だというのに、突然、あたりが暗くなり、午後三時までそんな状態が続きました。 45太陽は光を失い、神殿の幕が、なんと真っ二つに裂けたのです。 46その時イエスは、大声で、「父よ。わたしの霊を御手におゆだねします！」と叫んで、息を引き取られました。 47刑を執行していたローマ軍の隊長は、不思議な出来事を見て、神への恐れに打たれ、「確かに、この人は正しい方だった」と言いました。 48また、十字架刑を見に来ていた群衆も、このイエスの最期を見て、みな深い悲しみに沈んで、家へ帰って行きました。 49一方、ガリラヤからイエスに従って来た女たちやイエスの知人たちは、遠くからじっと様子を見守っていました。
50-52そのころ、ユダヤの最高議会の議員で、アリマタヤ出身のヨセフという人が、ピラトのもとに行き、イエスの遺体を引き取りたいと願い出ました。彼はメシヤが来るのをひたすら待ち望んでいた神を敬う人物で、他の議員たちの決議や行動には同意していませんでした。 53ヨセフはイエスの遺体を十字架から降ろし、長い亜麻布に包んで、まだだれも葬ったことのない、岩をくり抜いた新しい墓に納めました。
54それは、安息日の準備の日にあたる金曜日の、午後遅いころのことでした。 55遺体が十字架から降ろされた時、ガリラヤから従って来た女たちは、ヨセフのあとについて行き、イエスが墓に納められるのを見届けました。 56それから家に戻り、遺体に塗る香料と香油とを用意しましたが、すぐに安息日になったので、ユダヤのおきてに従って休みました。
