Zebah and Zalmunna
1Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously.
2But he answered them, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer? 3God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided.
4Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it. 5He said to the men of Sukkoth, “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
6But the officials of Sukkoth said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?”
7Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”
8From there he went up to Peniel8:8 Hebrew Penuel, a variant of Peniel; also in verses 9 and 17 and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had. 9So he said to the men of Peniel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.”
10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen. 11Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the unsuspecting army. 12Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.
13Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres. 14He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth, the elders of the town. 15Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?’ ” 16He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers. 17He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.
18Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?”
“Men like you,” they answered, “each one with the bearing of a prince.”
19Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.” 20Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.
21Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Come, do it yourself. ‘As is the man, so is his strength.’ ” So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments off their camels’ necks.
Gideon’s Ephod
22The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.” 24And he said, “I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.” (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)
25They answered, “We’ll be glad to give them.” So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 26The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,8:26 That is, about 43 pounds or about 20 kilograms not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels’ necks. 27Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.
Gideon’s Death
28Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace forty years.
29Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live. 30He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. 31His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek. 32Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god 34and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.
Gedeão persegue dois reis
1Os chefes tribais de Efraim ficaram muito contrariados e perguntaram a Gedeão. “Porque não nos mandaste chamar quando foste lutar contra os midianitas?”
2-3Gedeão respondeu-lhes: “Deus permitiu que fossem vocês a capturar Orebe e Zeebe, os generais do exército midianita. Que fizemos nós em comparação? As vossas ações na parte final do combate foram muito mais importantes do que as nossas no princípio!” E assim eles se acalmaram.
4Entretanto, Gedeão tinha atravessado o Jordão com os seus 300 homens. Estavam todos muito cansados, mas continuavam a perseguir os inimigos. 5E pediram alimentos à gente de Sucote: “Estamos esgotados de energias, por andarmos a perseguir Zeba e Zalmuna, os reis de Midiã.”
6Contudo, os líderes de Sucote retorquiram-lhes: “Porque devemos dar comida às vossas tropas, se ainda não apanharam Zeba e Zalmuna!”
7Ao ouvir isto Gedeão avisou-os: “Pois então, quando o Senhor os entregar nas minhas mãos, regressarei aqui e hei de rasgar a vossa carne com espinhos e abrolhos do deserto.”
8Depois foi a Penuel e pediu ali alimento, mas obteve a mesma resposta. 9A estes disse também: “Quando toda a campanha acabar, tornarei aqui e derrubarei esta torre.”
10Por esta altura, esses tais reis midianitas, Zeba e Zalmuna, encontravam-se em Carcor com cerca de uns 15 000 soldados das suas tropas. Era tudo o que restava daqueles exércitos aliados do oriente, pois 120 000 tinham já sido mortos.
11Então Gedeão contornou a zona onde estavam os fugitivos, indo pelo caminho das caravanas, a oriente de Noba e de Jogboa, caindo de surpresa sobre o que restava do exército midianita, que não estava a contar com aquele ataque. 12Os dois reis fugiram, mas Gedeão perseguiu-os e capturou-os, derrotando o exército inteiro. 13Algum tempo depois, Gedeão regressou pelo caminho de Heres. 14Ali prendeu um moço de Sucote e disse-lhe que escrevesse os nomes dos 77 chefes políticos e religiosos da cidade.
15Depois disso, regressou a Sucote e disse àquela gente: “Vocês escarneceram de mim, dizendo que nunca haveria de apanhar os reis Zeba e Zalmuna e recusaram-me alimento numa altura em que estava extenuado e debilitado pela fome. Pois bem, aqui estão!” 16Então pegou nos chefes da cidade e deu-lhes uma lição com espinhos e abrolhos. 17Foi também a Penuel e deitou abaixo a torre da cidade, matando toda a população.
18Gedeão perguntou a esses reis, Zeba e Zalmuna: “A gente que vocês mataram em Tabor, como é que eles eram?” Responderam-lhe: “Eram parecidos contigo, como filhos de reis!”
19“Pois eram certamente os meus irmãos!”, exclamou Gedeão. “Tão certo como vive o Senhor, de que não vos mataria se não lhes tivessem tirado a vida.”
20Seguidamente, voltando-se para Jeter, o seu filho mais velho, mandou que os matasse. No entanto, como o rapaz ainda era novinho, teve receio.
21Zeba e Zalmuna disseram a Gedeão: “Mata-nos tu mesmo. Preferimos morrer às mãos dum homem!” E então Gedeão matou-os e guardou para si os ornamentos que estavam nos pescoços dos seus camelos.
O éfode de Gedeão
22Os homens de Israel pediram-lhe que fosse o seu rei: “Sê o nosso governador! Tu, o teu filho e o teu neto, porque nos salvaste dos midianitas.”
23Mas a resposta de Gedeão foi: “Eu não serei o vosso rei, nem tão-pouco o meu filho. O Senhor, sim, é o vosso rei! 24No entanto pretendo fazer-vos um pedido: deem-me todos os pendentes das orelhas dos nossos inimigos que guardaram do despojo.” Porque as tropas midianitas, sendo ismaelitas como eram, usavam pendentes de ouro.
25“De boa vontade o faremos!” E logo estenderam ali uma capa onde toda a gente foi pôr os pendentes que tinha guardado. 26O valor total daquilo foi calculado nuns 20 quilos de ouro, sem contar os crescentes, as cadeias, os fatos reais em púrpura e os ornamentos dos pescoços dos camelos. 27Gedeão fez um éfode com todo aquele ouro e pô-lo em Ofra, a sua própria cidade. Em breve Israel começou a prestar-lhe adoração, voltando as costas a Deus. Isto veio a ser a ruína de Gedeão e de sua família.
A morte de Gedeão
28Esta é a narrativa de como Midiã foi subjugado por Israel. Os midianitas nunca mais levantaram a cabeça e a terra permaneceu em paz por 40 anos; ou seja, todo o tempo de vida de Gedeão. 29Este viveu sempre na sua própria casa; 30chegou a ter 70 filhos, pois teve muitas mulheres. 31Teve igualmente uma concubina em Siquem que lhe deu um filho de nome Abimeleque. 32Quando faleceu era já muito velho e foi posto no sepulcro do seu pai Joás em Ofra, na terra dos abiezritas.
33No entanto, logo que Gedeão morreu, os israelitas começaram a adorar os ídolos de Baal e de Baal-Berite. 34Deixaram de considerar o Senhor como o seu Deus, ainda que tivesse sido ele quem os salvou de todos os inimigos ao redor. 35Tão-pouco mostraram bondade alguma para com a família de Jerubaal, apesar de todo o bem que fez por eles.
