Gideon
1The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. 2Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. 3Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. 4They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 5They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it. 6Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
7When the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8he sent them a prophet, who said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 9I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors; I drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.”
11The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
13“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
14The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”
15“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
16The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”
17Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. 18Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.”
And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.”
19Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah6:19 That is, probably about 36 pounds or about 16 kilograms of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.
20The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”
23But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”
24So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25That same night the Lord said to him, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old.6:25 Or Take a full-grown, mature bull from your father’s herd Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole6:25 That is, a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah; also in verses 26, 28 and 30 beside it. 26Then build a proper kind of6:26 Or build with layers of stone an altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second6:26 Or full-grown; also in verse 28 bull as a burnt offering.”
27So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
28In the morning when the people of the town got up, there was Baal’s altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar!
29They asked each other, “Who did this?”
When they carefully investigated, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”
30The people of the town demanded of Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”
31But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, “Are you going to plead Baal’s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.” 32So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal6:32 Jerub-Baal probably means let Baal contend. that day, saying, “Let Baal contend with him.”
33Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. 34Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. 35He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.
36Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised— 37look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.” 38And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.
39Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.” 40That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew.
Gideon och hans familj

De kom med sina kameler, alltför många för att kunna räknas, och de stannade ända tills de hade förstört allt som fanns i landet. 6Midjaniternas plundringar gjorde Israel fattigt och de ropade till Herren. 7När israeliterna ropade till Herren för midjaniternas skull, 8sände han en profet till dem som sa: ”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: ’Jag förde er ut från Egyptens slaveri 9och räddade er från egypterna och från alla som behandlade er illa. Jag fördrev era fiender och gav er det här landet. 10Jag talade om för er att jag är Herren, er Gud, och att ni inte fick tillbe de gudar som dyrkas av amoréerna i vars land ni bor, men ni lyssnade inte till mig.’ ”
11Men en dag kom Herrens ängel och satte sig under terebinten vid Ofra på den mark som tillhörde aviesriten Joash. Där höll Joashs son Gideon på att tröska vete i vinpressen som gav honom skydd för midjaniterna.
12Herrens ängel visade sig då för honom och sa: ”Du tappre soldat, Herren är med dig!”
13”Herre, om Herren verkligen är med oss, varför har då allt det här hänt?” svarade Gideon. ”Och hur är det då med alla under som våra förfäder har talat med oss om, som när Gud förde ut dem ur Egypten? Nej, nu har Herren alldeles lämnat oss och han låter midjaniterna göra slut på oss!”
14Då vände sig Herren till honom och sa: ”Jag ska göra dig stark! Gå och rädda Israel undan midjaniternas våld! Det är jag som sänder dig!” 15”Men Herre, hur ska jag kunna rädda Israel?” svarade Gideon. ”Min släkt är den oansenligaste i hela Manasses stam och jag själv är den i familjen man sist skulle tänka på för ett sådant uppdrag!” 16”Men jag ska vara med dig!” svarade Herren. ”Du kommer att besegra midjaniterna som om de vore en enda man.”
17”Om du ser välvilligt på mig”, svarade Gideon, ”så ge mig ett tecken på att det verkligen är du som talar med mig! 18Men stanna kvar här, så ska jag gå och hämta en gåva åt dig.” ”Jag ska stanna här tills du kommer tillbaka,” svarade han.
19Gideon skyndade sig då hem och tillredde en killing och bakade ojäst bröd av en hel säck6:19 Ordagrant: en efa mjöl. 1 efa=mellan 20 och 40 liter. mjöl. Sedan lade han köttet i en korg och hällde spadet i ett kärl och bar fram det till budbäraren som satt kvar vid terebinten och ställde fram det.
20”Lägg brödet och köttet där på berghällen och häll över spadet!” sa budbäraren till honom. När Gideon gjort som han blivit tillsagd, 21rörde Herrens ängel vid köttet och brödet med spetsen av sin stav och plötsligt slog det upp eld ur klippan och köttet och brödet brann upp. Samtidigt försvann Herrens ängel.
22När Gideon förstod att det verkligen varit Herrens ängel som talat med honom, utropade han: ”Vad ska jag ta mig till, Herre Gud, för jag har ju sett Herrens ängel ansikte mot ansikte!” 23”Du behöver inte vara rädd!” sa Herren till honom. ”Du ska inte dö!”
Gideon river ner Baals altare
24Och Gideon byggde upp ett altare där och kallade det ”Herren är frid”. Altaret finns fortfarande kvar i aviesriternas Ofra.
25På natten sa Herren till Gideon att ta den andre i ordningen av faderns tjurar, den som var sju år gammal, föra fram den till hans fars baalsaltare, riva ner altaret och hugga sönder asherapålen som stod bredvid.
26”Bygg ett altare åt Herren, din Gud! Du ska bygga det uppe på denna kulle. Offra sedan tjuren som ett brännoffer till Herren och använd virket från den nedhuggna asherapålen som ved!”
27Gideon tog med sig tio av sina tjänare och gjorde som Herren hade sagt. Men han gjorde det på natten, för han var rädd att bli upptäckt av de övriga familjemedlemmarna och folket i staden. Han gjorde det därför på natten.
28Tidigt följande morgon var det några som fick se att baalsaltaret var nerrivet, att asherapålen bredvid var borta och att ett nytt altare hade byggts upp på vilket tjuren hade offrats som brännoffer.
29”Vem har gjort det här?” frågade man varandra. När de undersökte saken och hörde sig för, kom det fram att det var Gideon, Joashs son, som gjort det. 30”För hit din son”, ropade de till Joash. ”Han måste dö! Han har rivit ner baalsaltaret och huggit sönder asheran som stod intill.”
31Men Joash gav folket svar på tal: ”Vill ni försvara Baals sak? Behöver han verkligen er hjälp? Den som försvarar hans sak ska dödas innan morgonen kommer. Om Baal är en verklig gud, låt honom då försvara sig själv mot den som rivit ner hans altare!”
32Från den dagen kallades Gideon för Jerubbaal som det sades: Låt Baal försvara sig mot den som river hans altare.
Gideon lägger ut ull
33Strax därefter förenade sig midjaniterna, amalekiterna och folk österifrån. De gick över floden Jordan och slog läger i Jisreels dal. 34Då kom Herrens Ande över Gideon. Han blåste i ett horn och aviesriterna kom och följde honom. 35Han sände också budbärare till Manasse, Asher, Sebulon och Naftali och uppmanade dem att gå med i striden. Alla följde hans uppmaning. 36Då sa Gideon till Gud: ”Om du tänker använda mig för att rädda Israel som du har lovat, 37bevisa det då genom att låta den ull jag lägger ut på tröskplatsen i kväll vara våt av dagg i morgon bitti, men låt marken förbli torr. Då vet jag att du tänker rädda Israel genom mig, som du har lovat.”
38Och just så blev det. När Gideon kom till tröskplatsen nästa morgon och kramade ur ullen, fick han en hel skål full med vatten.
39Då sa Gideon till Herren: ”Bli inte arg på mig, utan låt mig få göra ett försök till. Den här gången ska ullen förbli torr, medan marken runt omkring är våt av dagg.”
40Herren gjorde det som Gideon hade önskat. Den natten förblev ullen torr, medan marken runt omkring var täckt av dagg.
