The Birth of Samson
1Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.
2A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth. 3The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. 4Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean. 5You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”
6Then the woman went to her husband and told him, “A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God, very awesome. I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name. 7But he said to me, ‘You will become pregnant and have a son. Now then, drink no wine or other fermented drink and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from the womb until the day of his death.’ ”
8Then Manoah prayed to the Lord: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born.”
9God heard Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman while she was out in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her. 10The woman hurried to tell her husband, “He’s here! The man who appeared to me the other day!”
11Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he said, “Are you the man who talked to my wife?”
“I am,” he said.
12So Manoah asked him, “When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule that governs the boy’s life and work?”
13The angel of the Lord answered, “Your wife must do all that I have told her. 14She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
15Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “We would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat for you.”
16The angel of the Lord replied, “Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.” (Manoah did not realize that it was the angel of the Lord.)
17Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?”
18He replied, “Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding.13:18 Or is wonderful” 19Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. And the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched: 20As the flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground. 21When the angel of the Lord did not show himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that it was the angel of the Lord.
22“We are doomed to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen God!”
23But his wife answered, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.”
24The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him, 25and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Simsons födelse
1Ännu en gång gjorde Israel det som var ont i Herrens ögon. Herren överlämnade dem åt filistéerna i fyrtio år. 2En man från Sora, som hette Manoach och tillhörde Dans stam, hade en hustru som inte kunde få barn. 3Herrens ängel visade sig för henne och sa: ”Du har varit barnlös länge, men snart ska du få en son. 4Drick inte vin eller starka drycker och ät inte mat som är oren, 5för du ska bli gravid och föda en son. Håret på din son får aldrig klippas, för han ska vara en Guds nasir ända från moderlivet och han ska påbörja Israels räddning från filistéerna.”
6Kvinnan berättade detta för sin man: ”En gudsman visade sig för mig. Han såg ut som Guds ängel och han var fruktansvärd att se på. Jag frågade inte varifrån han kom och han sa inte heller sitt namn. 7Däremot sa han till mig: ’Du kommer att bli gravid och föda en son. Han sa också att jag inte skulle dricka vin eller starka drycker och inte heller äta oren mat, för barnet ska bli en Guds nasir från sin födelse ända till sin död.’ ” 8Manoach bad då till Herren: ”Låt denne gudsman komma tillbaka och lära oss hur vi ska göra med barnet som ska födas!” 9Gud hörde hans bön och Guds ängel kom igen till Manoachs hustru som då var ute på fältet. Men hennes man Manoach var inte med henne. 10Hon skyndade sig därför att få tag på sin make och sa till honom: ”Mannen som kom till mig häromdagen är här igen!”
11Manoach följde då med henne och frågade mannen: ”Är du samme man som talade med henne häromdagen?” ”Ja, det är jag”, svarade han.
12”När dina ord går i uppfyllelse, hur ska vi ta hand om honom? Hur ska vi göra med honom?” frågade Manoach honom.
13Herrens ängel svarade: ”Var noga med att din hustru följer allt jag har sagt henne! 14Hon får inte äta druvor eller dricka vin och starka drycker och inte äta något orent. Hon ska hålla allt jag befallt henne!”
15”Stanna kvar så vi får laga till en killing åt dig att äta”, sa Manoach till Herrens ängel.
16”Även om du håller mig kvar ska jag inte äta av maten”, svarade Herrens ängel Manoach. ”Men om du vill förbereda ett brännoffer, så bär fram det till Herren.” Manoach hade ännu inte förstått att det var Herrens ängel. 17Därför frågade Manoach Herrens ängel: ”Vad heter du? För när det som du sagt går i uppfyllelse vill vi hedra dig.” 18”Fråga inte efter mitt namn, för det är underbart”, svarade Herrens ängel.
19Då tog Manoach en killing tillsammans med matoffret och offrade det till Herren på en klippa. Då lät han något förunderligt ske inför Manoach och hans hustru. 20När lågorna från offret på klippan slog upp mot skyn, for Herrens ängel upp i lågan från altaret mitt framför deras ögon. Då föll Manoach och hans hustru ner med sina ansikten mot jorden. 21Detta var sista gången de såg ängeln och Manoach förstod nu att det varit en Herrens ängel13:21 Deras slutsats är egentligen att de sett Gud själv (se även följande vers) och därför är de övertygade om att de nu ska dö..
22”Vi kommer att dö”, sa Manoach till sin hustru. ”Vi har sett Gud!” 23Men hon svarade: ”Om Herren hade tänkt döda oss, skulle han inte ha tagit emot brännoffret och matoffret och han skulle inte heller ha uppenbarat sig för oss och låtit oss se och höra allt detta.”
24Barnet som hon födde fick namnet Simson och Herren välsignade honom när han växte upp. 25Och Herrens Ande började verka på honom när han var i Dans läger mellan Sora och Eshtaol.
