1Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. 2Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” 3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.
4Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, 5the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6“Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”
7Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”
8The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.”
9Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”
10The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.” 11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: “What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?”
13The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.”
14Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, 15saying:
“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites. 16But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea11:16 Or the Sea of Reeds and on to Kadesh. 17Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Give us permission to go through your country,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18“Next they traveled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
19“Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Let us pass through your country to our own place.’ 20Sihon, however, did not trust Israel11:20 Or however, would not make an agreement for Israel to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
21“Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, 22capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.
23“Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess. 25Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them? 26For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? 27I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”
28The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. 30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”
32Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
34When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”
36“My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. 37But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”
38“You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
Jefta besegrar ammoniterna
1Jefta var en mycket tapper stridsman från Gilead. Han var son till en prostituerad och hans far var Gilead. 2Gilead hade söner också med sin hustru. När Jeftas halvbröder växte upp, drev de bort honom. ”Du får inte dela arvet i vår fars hus! Du är ju son till en främmande kvinna”, sa de.
3Jefta fick fly från sina halvbröder och bosatte sig i landet Tov. Snart slöt sig en grupp äventyrare till honom och följde honom.
4En tid senare började ammoniterna sitt krig mot Israel. 5När ammoniterna gav sig i strid med Israel, gick de äldste i Gilead för att hämta Jefta från landet Tov. 6De bad honom komma och anföra armén i striden mot ammoniterna.
7Men Jefta svarade Gileads äldste: ”Ni hatar mig och har kört bort mig från min fars hus. Varför kommer ni till mig nu när ni har råkat i svårigheter?” 8”Därför att vi behöver dig”, svarade de. ”Om du vill leda oss mot ammoniterna, ska du bli hövding för alla som bor i Gilead.”
9Jefta svarade Gileads äldste: ”Om ni hämtar mig hem för att strida mot ammoniterna och Herren ger dem åt mig, då blir jag er hövding.” 10”Herren är vårt vittne”, svarade de. ”Vi lovar att göra som du har sagt.”
11Jefta följde då med Gileads äldste och folket gjorde honom till sin ledare och befälhavare. Jefta bekräftade inför Herren i Mispa vad han hade sagt. 12Sedan sände Jefta bud till kungen i Ammon och bad att få veta varför Israel hade blivit anfallet. 13Kungen svarade Jeftas sändebud: ”När israeliterna kom från Egypten, tog de mitt land från Arnon ända till Jabbok och till Jordan. Lämna nu tillbaka allting utan strid!”
14Jefta skickade då på nytt sändebud till Ammons kung 15och sa:
”Så säger Jefta: Israel tog inte moabiternas och ammoniternas land. 16När Israels folk kom till Kadesh på sin väg från Egypten sedan de gått över Sävhavet, 17sände de bud till kungen i Edom och bad om tillåtelse att passera genom hans land, men han avvisade dem. Då bad de kungen i Moab om samma sak, men de blev avvisade där också och stannade i Kadesh.
18Slutligen gick de runt Edom och Moab genom öknen och vandrade utmed den östra gränsen tills de kom bortom Moabs land och slog läger vid floden Arnon, men de gick aldrig genom Moabs land. Arnon utgör nämligen gränsen till Moab. 19Då sände israeliterna bud till amoréernas kung Sichon som bodde i Heshbon och bad om tillåtelse att få gå genom hans land för att komma till sin bestämmelseort. 20Men kung Sichon litade inte på Israel, så han mobiliserade sin armé vid Jahas och anföll dem. 21Då gav Herren, Israels Gud, Sichon och allt hans folk i israeliternas våld och de slog dem och intog hela det land där amoréerna bodde. 22På så sätt övertog Israel allt amoreiskt land från floden Arnon till Jabbok och från öknen till Jordan.
23Herren, Israels Gud, drev ut amoréerna för sitt folk Israel och nu vill du ta deras land i besittning! 24Du behåller ju vad din gud Kemosh ger dig och vi kommer att behålla allt som Herren, vår Gud, ger oss! 25Är du förmer än Balak, Sippors son och kung i Moab? Han tvistade inte med israeliterna och han anföll dem inte. 26Men nu efter trehundra år kommer ni med detta! Israel har bott här hela tiden, utspridda över hela landet från Heshbon till Aroer och utmed floden Arnon. Varför har ni inte tidigare försökt att ta det tillbaka? 27Nej, jag har inte gjort något ont mot dig, utan det är du som har gjort fel genom att dra ut i strid mot mig. Men Herren, domaren, ska snart visa vem som har rätt, Israel eller Ammon!”
28Men kungen i Ammon tog ingen hänsyn till vad Jefta hade sagt.
29Då kom Herrens Ande över Jefta, och han tågade genom Gilead och Manasse och förbi Mispa i Gilead och anföll Ammons armé. 30Och Jefta gav ett löfte inför Herren: ”Om du överlämnar ammoniterna åt mig, 31ska det som först kommer mig till mötes genom dörren när jag kommer hem efter att ha besegrat ammoniterna, tillhöra Herren och offras som ett brännoffer.”
32Jefta drog sedan ut mot ammoniterna och Herren gav dem i hans våld. 33Ammoniterna led ett mycket stort nederlag och förlorade tjugo städer från Aroer till Minnit och dessutom området ända fram till Avel Keramim. På så sätt blev ammoniterna kuvade av israeliterna.
34När Jefta återvände hem, sprang hans dotter, hans enda barn – han hade inga andra, varken söner eller döttrar, ut för att möta honom. Hon slog på en tamburin och dansade, 35men när han fick se henne, rev han sönder sina kläder. ”Ve mig, min dotter!” ropade han. ”Du får mig att krossas och sjunka genom jorden! Jag har gett ett löfte till Herren och det kan jag inte ta tillbaka!”
36”Far”, sa flickan. ”Du måste göra med mig det som du har lovat Herren, för han har låtit dig hämnas dina fiender ammoniterna. 37Men låt mig först gå upp till bergen tillsammans med mina väninnor för att under två månader gråta över att jag aldrig blir gift.”
38”Ja”, svarade han. ”Du får gå.” Hon gick alltså med sina väninnor upp till bergen för att under två månader gråta över sitt öde.
39Efter två månader återvände hon till sin far som gjorde med henne vad han hade lovat. Hon hade aldrig legat med någon man. Efter detta blev det en sed i Israel 40att de unga flickorna under fyra dagar varje år gick bort för att fira minnet av gileaditen Jeftas dotter.
